- As you might know, two months ago we had a poll, in which we asked our viewers to help us select the countries whose railway systems they want to see on Railways Explained. And, the choice fell on Germany and South Korea. As we covered Germany, not in one, but three videos, now is the turn for South Korea.
This video is a part of the Railway Nation series, in which we try to comprehensively discuss the railway system of each country.
As always, we started with the history of Korean railways, which is very interesting bearing in mind that over a long time they were under foreign administration, then, we covered the aspects of development of rail network and services, the rail reform, traffic figures and trends, and many other.
In the next episode, we are planning to continue this story, with the focus on the development of Korean high-speed rail system.

There are many suspicions about politicians' involvement in setting up high-speed rail stops.
This is because the surrounding land prices rise very much as the train station is built.
Not long ago, there was an accident in which a train wheel was damaged and a train running at a speed close to 300km/h derailed.
Fortunately, few people were injured.
I feel that there are many places to improve Korean railroads.
I mean, train and transit projects tend to increase land value where they are built so it could just be normal
Mexico is investing heavily on rail. The Mayan Train and the Mexico City-Toluca train, among others, are great examples of this construction spree. It would be awesome to see a video covering Mexico. Thank you!

Great video, Railways Explained. I just wanted to add that you might want to mention GTX project (currently under construction in Seoul) when discussing High-Speed Rail in Korea. This is world's first HSR-based urban transportation project that makes extensive use of the SR Suseo tunnel you mentioned in the video. It is really fascinating

Both Gs in "Gyeongi" are pronounced "guh" sound, so it's more like "Gh-young-Ghi"
"Chemulpo" is actually pronounced "Jemulpo"
"Gyeongbu" is pronounced "Gh-young-Bu"
"Gangnueng" is pronounced "Gang-Nng". Or Just "Gang-Nung" is fine I think.

I definitely agree that SR is not actually a competitor since it is majorly owned by Korail.
It does provide different stops than Korail though. (Suseo, Seongnam, Yongin, Dongtan, Pyeongtaek, etc.)
These cities have large population and are considered "Su-do-kwon" cities, which can be translated to "Greater Capital Area"(Capital as in capital city of a country)
I can't wait for the next video! For railway fans like me out there, Korea's rolling stock is also quite interesting, so check it out!

Wish you guys covered our underground metro too(Seoul metro is quite good) but I guess it isn't in the scope of the channel.

Interesting about an often overlooked country which has made enormous progress the last few decades.
Enormous progress is an understatement.
10th largest economy now (bigger than Russsia Spain, Australia etc.), GDP per capita (PPP) surpasses Japan and Italy, and one of the biggest donors of aid. Used to be one of the poorest countries. Still is essentially an island surrounded by hostile countries.

Yup. GTX A is scheduled to open in 2024 (all sections are scheduled to open in 2028), the B is scheduled to open in 2029, and the C is scheduled to open in 2027, and one or two other metropolitan express railway lines may be added in the future.
I would request you to make a video MRTS projects and technical experience of Italy ..
Of course, Italy will be done some day
Everything gets implemented faster in smaller countries as compared to bigger ones, thus the development is also faster

Excellent video as always. Just to add a slight bit of local insight on the KTX and SRT situation...
There were attempts in the early 2010s by the Lee administration to privatize and make the HSR of Korea open-access along with major infrastructures in the country. But this was met with fierce opposition, as HSR revenues were subsidising the losses from the conventional lines of Korail, and the public feared that conventional lines would be abandoned without the HSR sticking with Korail. After all, railroad fares are very reasonable and many were content with the status quo. So with the opposition, the Lee government made SR, which was supposed to compete with Korail, while Korail was its parent company. There are attempts to this day to combine SR with Korail, but legal and shareholder complications are making things take longer than expected and don't seem to do well.
If only here in north america we could have innovation, competition etc. that could improve our rail system but sadly its heavily regulated and restricted by the goverment.

Our malaysian people's mindset more interesting n proud to have n use their private cars in their daily activities, and very different with most people in advanced countries who more practical, efficient, n wiser mindset how to use or invest their money.
Within their daily activities, they more depending on rail public transportation.
In the advanced countries only the richer people who use they private cars, mostly dont have a car, but they have more n plenty of saving money in bank or have investment in shares or stakes of the companies for their future lives.
On contrary, with our malaysian use their own cars but have too many debts, and also many of them felt in bancruptcy b'couse of car's n personal debts. personal, since they dont wiser to use or invest their money in the returnable n more profit matter for the future retired lives.
As a fellow Malaysian i agree, although i don't exactly blame them the government is always lazy about operating trains and such.
Many Koreans suffer from the wealth of housing and land prices rather than cars
I know many experts in Korea argue SR is not exactly competing with Korail since SR has monopoly on Suseo-Pyeongtaek high speed rail line. Since most traffic volumes are between Seoul and other cities, they essentially have monopoly for traffic to Southern, Eastern Seoul. For example, when people living southern part like me want to go to Gangnam area, I will take SR and when I want to go to Hongdae area, I will take KTX. Also, Korail has to cover their losses in normal line due to government mandated price control but SR didn't need to do that, and price advantage of SR is due to shorter distance between terminal station in Seoul and other regions.

Quite thoughtful experiment that if North Korean United with South, how will Railway infrastructure will affect in long run
I think NK should let SK modernize its railroads since SK's trains might not run once it passes NK, although the rail's specs between the two countries are the same.
NK would have a railway boom along with other sectors growing at rapid rate
North Korea's railway infrastructure is very poor
In the case of slow-speed trains, they will be able to operate after a little repair
On the other hand, in the case of high-speed trains, South Korea may have to rebuild all the tracks

Argentina🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷 has a lot of subway, railway, tramway and trolleybus history that is uncovered by almost all railway/transport foreign youtubers. Back in the day, about 100 years ago, it was one of the biggest railway networks of the world, but it was vastly reduced during the 60's, and practically abandoned in the 90's. However there are some current local-funded, chinese and russian projects to try to make a little kind of comeback and restoration. BTW, great video about Korean Railways

Only the KTX-1 was made with collaboration with France and in fact, succeeding KTXs, SRTs, ITXs are all made with Korean technology and is even being exported to different countries. And the efficiency rate for these trains are one of the highest in the world, the same case for Korea’s numerous metro system in its major cities. Maybe try doing research next time before making troll comments lol. Most foreigners that have been to Korea and lived there have nothing but praise for the rail system which is one of the best in the world.

As a child I had the idea of a high speed rail connection between Europe and Japan through the Soviet Union (I'm that old), Mongolia, China, Korea. Think big! It would mostly follow the "great circle", the shortest surface way between two points, so go through northern Siberia due to the curvature of the Earth. Clearly at that point the difficulties of building in the arctic didn't hold me back, or the political tensions between the two Koreas.
It has not become easier since, but if/when North and South Korea grow closer together, the railways should play an important role.
By the way, has an undersea rail connection between South Korea and Japan ever seriously been considered?

@@RailwaysExplainedI actually did surprisingly well. I did not expect some of the results at all. With one of the exams, I was one mark away from getting full marks which made me very pleased. I just hope I can keep up the momentum when it comes to the real big exams in the Summer.
