Because it's peripherally ported. Largest intake and exhaust porting currently possible and producing the most power out of all other porting types.

Tom You’re totally misinformed. They’re not banned because they were the fastest. They are nowhere near the pace of the top guys. In fact they qualified below top 10 and only a mere 2s faster than the non Group C guys and way off from top Group C. They won because:
1) They were racing on previous year min weight reg. 800kg vs 1000kg
2) The other guys have a mechanical and reliability issues.
