How can you tell if a timing belt has been sitting on a shelf for years or is new?
I would snag up a four cylinder version of that in a heart beat. Man that's in great shape. Too bad engineers made that bad 6 cylinder, interference engine with a rubber timing belt..
@@tonymontana3742 A good service shop would put a sticker on the plastic timing cover showing the date and mileage when it was done. Or like Scotty said, if there is nothing, you can take off the two plastic covers and inspect the belt itself (or have your mechanic do it). I have a 2008 Honda PIlot EX-L, now with 252k miles. I got it at 225k miles and immediately changed the belt, tensioners, water pump. I suggest using Aisin or Honda brands (Aisin makes them for Honda). I got mine at Rock Auto - it was $4xx.
2008 AWD was the last year Honda Pilot made without the VCM. That is the one of the reasons I picked it. Mine did not have a tow hitch, which is what I wanted. I added one myself. The car runs great. I use it for towing a trailer. The car is good for towing too.
@@loualexander3408 How do you know the age of the so called new belt? Date code for when it was manufactured?
I got a VCM disabler for my Honda Odyssey because it was running rough. It cost like a $100. It was one of those good ones from Canada that disables itself if your engine temperature gets too high. Not one of those cheap ones from China that can't do that. Now my Odyssey runs on 6 cylinders all the time and it runs smooth.
work smarter not harder. time to low ball a high mileage vcm honda cheers
Seems to be needed for non-4 wheel drive models.
Nowadays, new car prices have skyrocketed big time. A new pickup w, for example, can run up to $85-100k. Unless if you win the lottery, most working people can’t afford it new vehicle. In fact it’s a good idea to keep your old one if it’s runs good and is well maintained
If you baby a Corolla, it will run forever. lol
Most people can't afford to buy a new car without getting into debt. The prices are insane. You can't go wrong with a properly maintained, old Honda.
💯 absolutely
I have an old Honda Accord and it runs fabulous..
You are not a bright person if you are buying a brand new car
I got a 2015 Si. Didn’t spend an arm and a leg, but I’m having a blast!
@@andyblank4157 That's because you're smart and you understand economics.
I'm not sure that the industry has improved that whole variable displacement of cylinder deactivation since Cadillac's 8-6-4 engine disaster. They still have the same problems. If you have a bad design it doesn't matter who builds it or how well you maintain it the thing just isn't going to work. I would try and deactivate it if possible.
It has improved in one respect - since it's electronically managed, you can actually get it turned off.
@@lucienswift447 I always wondered why they could not randomize the turning off of cylinders to reduce the possibility of warping/deforming of cylinder walls. Since it is electronically controlled like you said. At any rate, my 2008 Honda Pilot EXL AWD does not have the VCM and I am happy about that.
Deactivate the deactivate
Scotty for PRESIDENT!
Crook mechanics run away Scotty for President!!
Cars prices are really insane here in Nigeria;l can't afford to get even a used 2007 Corolla but l love watching kilmer everytime.
Why don’t you buy Innoson? They are made in your country I heard. Should be affordable
According to one TV newscast, stolen US cars are smuggled into Nigeria via Container ship.
Can you give some examples, e.g. 2xxx year, Toyota Corolla, $xxx? I am curious.
All stolen items end up in Nigeria.@@shauny2285
You're not alone, the same sh***t is going in Russia.
😺I popped in a SMART VCM from Quebec, and it turns off the VCM. Now runs full time on all six. Love it! It might save you an engine job if you do it early enough before too much damage. Easy to install yourself!
Scotty always says: "Deactivate the cylinder deactivation."
I bought a 2012 mazda 3 gx manual with 340,000 kilometeres on it for 1800$. Mostly bought it to learn to drive manual, save on gas commuting to work, and preserve the value of my 2019 dodge ram 1500 classic. Runs and drives like new still. Best money i ever spent so far!
Nice !!!! So much smarter than time payments
@deeferguson9272 I'm also only paying 140$ a month for insurance compared to the 400$ or so you'd pay with a new one.
They do sell VCM muzzle. I purchased one for my 2012 pilot. I installed it about 10,000 miles ago it deactivated the VCM system I don’t have any problem. It does get worse gas mileage 16mpg instead of 19 in the city.
Get the VCM controller and BYPASS that crappy VCM system all together!!
Buy a vcm disabler, they're cheap and work. I've had mine for a few years and no problems. It didn't seem to effect gas mileage at all.
The cops heard Scotty was heading out for another run on his "drag strip"😂.
😅😅
VCM tuner II. It deactivates the cylinder management
I’ve owned my 2014 pilot since 2017. 100,000 miles later still purring along. I’ll run it till it dies… And then keep resuscitating it. Does everything I need. I used to 4500 pound boat trailer. Not anymore. And I got rid of them variable valve timing with a little electrical transistor I bought from Canada. Mine doesn’t burn any oil. Guess I’m lucky.
We are the original owners of our 2014 EXL. We had the timing belt changed at 110K. Ours is burning oil & I always check it. We owned a 2003 Pilot for 15 years- great vehicle, but had the infamous rust at the rear wheel opening. I did a body filler repair which came out decent for my OCD. Honda removed the inner rubber wheel opening trim on the newer models which eliminated the build up of road salt.
I have 2007 RAV4 V6. I love my old lady. She’s still running great.
I don’t like the new turbo engine.
I guess I’m gonna ride my Toyota until it dies on me
The recent RAV4 is still a non-turbo 2.5 4-cylinder
@@brianthefloridian6254 but no longer V6, and that’s the problem
@@agnieszkaduba872 plenty of power from the 4-cylinder & better on gas mileage. Love my 2020 RAV4!
My 06 Odyssey with 117 thousand miles has VCM and uses no oil (nothing significant enough to show).
The VCM doesn't seem to hurt. It has always had Mobil 1 oil maintenance.
I always buy used with research involved, I bought a new Toyota in 2015,, great truck but wrecked it unfortunately, this day and time never new ever again
I have a 2013 Pilot with 260K still running well
People: i want a car that wipes my nose
Scotty: yea it would totally rip your face off when it breaks 😂😂😂
💀💀💀🤣🤣🤣
The old body style looks much better than the new one.
I agree..
I agree.
I agree
Ya I have the same issue with the ridgelines as well the old boxy style is so much better than the new one
@@berky1012 I like the old Ridgelines except for the weird slanted panels on the bed - it's like its tryna look like an Avalanche 🤮
I have a 2007 pilot with VCM. I leak minimal oil. The car has been great for me. No issues.
My dad recently purchased the new 2025 Honda Pilot he likes it so far the 10 speed transmission is nice and smooth compared to our 2007 Honda Pilot
Well, yeah, 2007 would be a 5-speed transmission. They can feel jerky at times. Just a solenoid and fluid change can do wonders though.
I'm glad we think alike Scotty. I try to buy the base model. manual windows, manual seats, manual door locks.
Great content as always Scotty! My wife loves her 2015 Honda Pilot. It looks just like the one in the video. It’s silver with gray leather interior. And my wife has some scratches and dings. 😂
Honda R18, legendary K20 and K24 are best out there. Although I would say R18 is a bulletproof engine that checks all boxes on a long run even in compare to Toyota engines.
Love my K24 ❤
K20Z3 😊
@@anthonysilvestri4946 too bad K24 is not a true V-tech, only on the intake cam .
K20Z3 is the last true Honda engine with Vtech
@@yukonstriker1703 you're guess is as good as mine - my K24 is completely stock LOL
@@anthonysilvestri4946 I'm not guessing. It's fact.
I bought a 2003 Saturn SUV ... I fell in love with it ...The moment I saw it ..Looks Aren't everything .. Checked what,s under the hood.. First ..Take someone who knows about Car,s Not your Brother... Who you thought you could trust.... Yeah 😮that's just me...
He probably had a deal with the man that owed it.😢
Variable cylinder management not good
I bought a new Pilot in 2016 .. great vehicle
A few years ago I bought a used 2006 Saturn VUE that has a Honda 3.5 V6 and drivetrain it had 32,000 miles on it
I disabled the VCM on my Odyssey. No issues with the VCM since. We bought ours used from a Honda dealer at about 58k kms (about 30k miles). Changed the plugs at that time and the back bank were soaked in oil. My friend has the same year van and he didn't get the VCM muzzler and ended up having to get the piston rings/engine rebuilt because of the VCM.
what did you use? I've heard of this but I wasn't sold on the options I found. We have a 16 Odyssey with this engine.
I bought a VCMmuzzler. It was one of the early ones. It has two resistors. Newer ones have a dial you can adjust. But mine has never had any issues at all.
The trailer trash that live around me here in Tennessee all have new pickups and SUVs parked in front of the old trailers. They all take out 6 or even 8 year loans.
77k is a bunch of crap.
For once I agree with Scotty I am hanging onto both my 02 Nissan & my GM-H Commodore (Australian made) 05. Neither have that many computer modules in them. They should see me out (age 66. ).Oh and I maintain them & do less than 3,000 miles in both.
I drive a 2002 Mitsubishi Mirage 4cyl 1:5 5speed manual with 237000Ks on the clock Still a good car It's always on country roads rural town living
If you're not a prepared VW fan, don't buy a car with the CCTA 2.0TSI engine either.
I have made pistons for 13 years pistons are not round there is a cam machined into a skirt of the piston .just saying
Got a 2012 Pilot w 160K, gonna keep it till 2060!
You make me laugh Scotty 😂 Thank You ❤ and you are an excellent mechanic 👍
What about using a VCM muzzler?
rav4 does have leather seats but only in premium trim
Oh boy the VCM 😬
The new J35Y8 with DOHC still has VCM gen 4, wonder how it will play with the non vtec and hydraulic lifter engine
My 2017 ridgeline crossed 190K 3 weeks ago, still chugging along
Not really true for new Corolla's...they have CVT's now. Have to bump up to the Camry to get a proper transmission.
2025 Camrys only come in hybrid.....no more normal automatic
@@mrgarrison3516 That's crappy news.
forget it I'm saving 77k driving my 2009 mdx 144k still runs like new
Once you reach a certain amount of miles with ANY vehicle, it's good practice to check your fluid levels everytime you get gas. Regardless of whether it's Toyota, Honda, or any other brand!
Any engine that burn oil early is unacceptable
Equinox v6 burns oil before 75k
most engines burn some oil it depends on how much
Thanks for the video 77,000 that's ridiculous if I had that kind of money I'd blow it all on records and buy an old 90s Toyota
I have a 2004 civic 278000 runs like a clock no codes I like it a lot it does burn oil just like you said
All engines will burn oil with the better part of 300K miles - except KIAs, they start burning oil at only 30K 🤣🤣🤣
Civic. DOES NOT HAVE THE VCM system. My 2007 Pilot EXL 4WD doesn’t have it either and has almost 500000 miles! Doesn’t burn a drop of oil and runs like new!
“It’s a good thing we’re looking - there’s the police!” Now that’s classic Scotty 😂😂
Great info
Check oil every time you put gas in & change oil every 5k.
Once a car starts to burn oil, the oil burning will increase over time.
Is there a way to deactivate the VCM option? I have a 1999 Honda 3.5 with 400k. Runs perfect and does not burn oil. I have held off upgrading my Honda because of the VCM thing.
I thought RI was pretty strict about oil burners. How long before the cats get clogged?
I agree gas and new cats are a lot cheaper than $77k but trading it for another big ole wagon that doesn't burn oil might be a good idea.
That is a beautiful rig!!!!! Keep it!!!!
Even if I buy another one I would keep my 2008 Honda Pilot EXL. After replacing the suspension it drives like a sports car on the corners. Unlike a sports car it can also tow.
Can you do a video on a Chevy Equinox? Is that it's a good car.
No. And no.
You can get a plug in VCM disabler.
I had the timing belt changed at Honda dealer. But after another 70k mileage, the belt stretched and the engine could not keep stable timing at idle. 8-13 degrees caused rolling idle. I will never buy another v6 Honda.
Maybe find another repair shop? I've never heard of a new (OEM) belt doing that.
Sad to say, but I have heard of certain dealers using sub-standard parts.
@@WannaBe-bsuidby the time the car developed the stretched belt, the car wasn’t worth spending another $1200 for another timing belt service. I had the dealer give me all my old parts and all the packaging for the new parts, which were all OEM
That doesn't sound right? I have a similar belt on my Yamaha 1700 and it's a beast with close to 100hp - no way your belt should die before the one on my muscle cruiser?
@@anthonysilvestri4946 I had the car diagnosed by the dealer and they confirmed it. They told me belts last 70-100k miles and that it was time for another one even though the first one lasted 100k miles. I don’t have patience to fart around at multiple mechanics so I got a Toyota highlander with a timing chain and never had any timing issues.
Hi Scotty, what can you say about the new Nissan Versa 2024 manual transmission version sedan? It's pretty cheap and no CVT transmission.
I drive a 1998 blazer ,I added a I.V. oil drip and a diaper
My oil never gets low now
😂
Sounds like that "senior citizen" is ready for the nursing home! 😄😄😄
@@anthonysilvestri4946 "depends " 🤔 😅
Seems like cars burning or using oil used to happen so frequently, the gas attendent (ha, yeah there used to be them) would check the oil every time you got gas.. And most times you'd need a quart.
That's because most gas station workers got a commission on everything they sold. Except gas.
Scotty, can you turn off the VCM mode?
Yes.
...that lady should've purchased a KIA Telluride!!!
The knew ones look nice. Curious to see how they hold up.
Scotty says that Kias are rolling piles of garbage!😂
"There's the police."
*2 seconds later*
Hits the gas lol
Scotty whats the best every thing all the time car ?
When American manufactures were good, and affordable, internationally all were good and affordable. For quality was the targeted mark.
"Old technology is better". That's why I chose a 2017 camry se. All tho I still got stuck with those stooooopid tire pressure monitors. I spent 3 months comparing all the cars in my price range. I felt if I was gonna take on this kinda debt, this thing better last until I die.
Honda has a clear coat problem them things peel like led paint.
I was wondering Ford Escape good or bad !!!!
Old Skool is always the best
I think you need to tell her to sell it and tell her which Honda to buy with the correct motor that you feel confident for her. I see future problems for her with this particular one I know you lead to the right one.
Nothing is ever the best car based on brand names. After being bought from other companies just for the name and noteritie. Unfortunately the flaws of these new owners is injected into the product they produce.
I have that!!!!! 2012 with 155,000 miles. I'm going to run it until it won't run anymore. I just keep up with the maintenance although the cost to maintain it is has gotten high, still better than a 700.00 a month or more car payment. I also save on insurance due to only having liability only coverage.
Hey Scotty is it safe to run the Bernies Cro 505 with the fuel cleaner at the same time?
As a former Honda mechanic, I stay away from Hondas because of their crap transmission and cheap plastics. Toyota's the way to go.
Hi do you reply Scotty I have Toyota alvon 2008 it has o2 censor can you do videos on it?
If anything goes from point A to B without burning oil so bad it smokes all over the place, why get rid of it? The car business is a dirty game.
this is a terrible engine. I had an accord with this engine and it leaked oil like crazy. It vibrated when deactivated cylinders. And eventually the transmission stopped working.
That amount of oil burned, what impact to cats?
if not even Honda can make cylinder deactivation right, nobody can.
Mazda Skyactiv better than Honda but still not perfect indeed
Honda has gone downhill.
Stompin tom connors said ,were saving lots of money spending money we aint got!
Sorry Scotty . But , a quart of oil needed in 1,000- 1,500 miles is completely UNacceptable !
BMW used to use "oval" pistons designed for high rpm in their M5. One quart every 750mi was considered fine by the manufacturer.
Then don't get a Toyota 2.4 litre..
It's not a new engine,so that isn't great but not Unacceptable.
Not to me ! I am older than Scotty , I and my family have never had a Toyota burn that much oil in any we have had . Most burned LESS than a 1/2 a quart between oil changes . We have had a few with over 200K , same story . @@r90fan1
That is incorrect. 1000-1500 is acceptable.
I'm trying to avoid anything with a turbo, direct injection, cylinder deactivation, hybrid anything, or weak cylinder rings. Any suggestions?
Bicycle
Turbo is ok with a big enough engine. IMO at least 5 cylinders and avoid driving like a lunatic. Turbo is great for passing on the highway and stuff.
My 2013 Honda has a K24 with no turbo, no GDI and a legit 5 speed transmission - if it had a manual transmission it would be perfect!
@@mlann2333 😂😂😂

This is why I don't buy ANY car that has this type of interference engines!
My honda pilot is rusting really bad, and the transmission is slipping pretty bad too.

Car wipe your nose. LOL
Hi Scotty!
Hello!
2007 Ford with 2.3 Mazda 4 cylinder 155,000 miles. It does not burn any oil. Buy a Mazda.
Valve stems can cause excessive oil loss. I have a 01 Yukon SLT 5.3L and I was losing a lot of oil with no leaks but smoke comes out the exhaust when idling. I did a little research and found out that when you start experience in oil loss it's the beginning of the valve stems going out. People overlook those when suffering from oil loss/consumption.. If you think EV's sucks GIVE ME A HELL YEAH!! 🇺🇸 1st 4ever
What are your thoughts on a '97 Jeep Cherokee?
You must be a new subscriber 😂
You must be a troll.
I don't know why Honda continues to use interference engines with timing belts, while Toyota uses non-interference engines with timing chains
cheaper?
Not as good as they used to be keep the old one and Acura sucks anymore
My wife has a 12 MDX with the 3.7 it got to where it was burning a way about every 700 miles. Car has 190k miles I did a piston soak with AC Delco too engine cleaner. Seems better so far burning about 1 at every 1500 miles now.
Please start up a shop in Syracuse, NY!
I stay away from GDI, CVT, and turbos for reliability.
Can the varriable cylender system be turnerd off? I just got a Acura wit a v6 with that option. Can it be turned off via osb port, or somehow else?
There's a kit for it but the 3.7 V-6 never offered VCM, or just live with it
Just drive really fast all the time so the cylinders never deactivate! LOL
Those Honda timing belts are hard to change because the crank shaft pulley bolt is tight, tight, tight. Get the tool to hold the pulley and a four foot cheater pipe. Impact wouldn’t get it.
Is there a button to deactivate the feature like start/stop?
Cause other than that, they are really good engines
VCM is a horrible system
Never buy a Car with an "engine"! Buy an All Electric!😅 no oil , no gas, no transmission. No distributor. No coolant or radiator leaks. Just brakes repair and steering repair and tires Only.
I have a 2004 Solara 175,000. Need a Catalytic Converter because someone put something in my tank. Cost me $900 to clean it out. Had a full tank of $80. Why does it have 3 of them? Are you kidding me. It’s the one by the tank
