    Tanya was the host of one of the Sony presentations in the Paramount Theater. Very cool that she knows so many well known cinematographers. She had a famous Italian cinematographer, Dante Spinotti, who did use a FX3 with the Venice in one of his last movies (Tommy Maddox was also on the panel). And I must have missed you by 5 minutes at the ARRI booth.

    Ha! Dean Cundey! I did his reel early in my editing career. I remember being shocked because he was doing commercials for products like bug spray. Being a naive youngster I asked him - YOU SHOT JURASSIC PARK! What are you doing working bug spray commercials. He said practice. He also said it pays just as good and in some cases better than a feature film AND I get to be with family AND I work maybe 3-5 days per project. (This was back when Antione Fuqua, Michael Bay were directing huge big budget commercials for Nike, VISA, Mercedes etc.) He also explained to me that although the glitz and glamour of working on big projects is cool, it's also exhausting - especially being away from your family for 3-6 months. That conversation changed my whole view of the industry. I'm still in it and enjoy it immensely. But the glitz and glamour does wear off. This conversation was about 20 years ago. At the time DP's (at least at the production company I worked for) were pulling down $4500 per day for maybe a week long shoot. It blew my mind that these top level Cinematographers were shooting commercials for Target, McDonalds, Raid, Blue Bunny Ice Cream, Snickers etc. I'm talking guys who won oscars!! What a time that was.

      I talked to Cundey at one of these expos and told him that I wished he had shot Jurassic Park 2 and he agreed with me that JP2 did not look good compared to JP.

      tl;dr DP work doesn't pay as much as you think. and he really REALLY needed the money.

    • @rayzrsharp
      @rayzrsharp ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheFaustianMan That might be NOW, but this TLDR conversation took place that’s how much top level guys were making. Commercial directors were making on average $8-12k a day. For a 4day shoot. Michael Bay was pulling down $25k a day. This was mid to late 90s.

    This is such a fantastic walkthrough at Paramount Studios for Cine Gear! As a cinematographer, I appreciate your effort in providing an insider's perspective on the industry's latest technologies and trends. It's always interesting to hear from professionals discussing their projects and collaborations - truly inspirational!
    The mention of Shotdeck piqued my interest. It's such an incredible resource for cinematographers. It reminds us of the immense creative possibilities and the versatility of our craft. It's impressive how it has compiled shots from various films for reference.
    I am intrigued by the Ready Rig booth and its modular system for camera stabilization. Such advancements play a crucial role in enhancing the storytelling process by ensuring smooth transitions and movements. Can't wait to explore more about this tool.
    And the hope for a free Arri, I couldn't help but chuckle at that! We all dream about scoring one, don't we? Thank you for sharing this wonderful journey with us. Please keep these videos coming!
