STORYLINE:
Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested at an encampment set up by New York University students calling for the school to divest from weapons manufacturers and the Israeli government amid the war in Gaza.
More than 100 New York Police Department officers entered the encampment to begin making arrests shortly after 8:30pm, following warnings of arrest for trespassing.
“We’re students, this is our university. Why are we not allowed to be here? Why are we not allowed to express ourselves?” said NYU law student Byul Yoon. “It’s a really outrageous crackdown by the university to allow the police to arrest students on our own campus.”
The encampment, set up by students at Gould Plaza in front of NYU’s Stern School of Business, swelled to hundreds of protesters throughout the day Monday.
The school said it warned the crowd to leave, then called in the police after the scene became disorderly and the university said it learned of reports of “intimidating chants and several antisemitic incidents.”
“Antisemitism is never OK. That’s absolutely not what we stand for and that’s why there are so many Jewish comrades that are here with us today,” Yoon said.
Tensions remained high Monday at Columbia, where the campus gates were locked to anyone without a school ID and where protests broke out both on campus and outside.
