    Dad's icing story - over sea of Japan in winter C-46, both engines quite suddenly, they were not that high due to weather and loosing altitude while flying through emergency checklist, getting below 100 feet, pilot asks 'now what do we do', dad says 'Pray", as they brace for impact both engines scream back to life and they skim the water before flying away again.... he had a lot of great stories that I wish he would have wrote down.

    I read Kerry's book "Ferry Pilot" last month and I have to say that it's one of the best , if not THE best aviation memoir I've ever read! I could not put it down. I love Kerry's writing style, the perfect mix of technical jargon, laymen's terms, sarcasm and humor. Highly recommended!

    Couple of ferry pilot stories for you from the 1970s era. Flight of two Navajos going to Europe together. The pilot of one plane notices the other pilot is asleep with the autopilot flying. No problem, I'll just call him on the radio and wake him up. Ulp, that didn't work. And it is getting near time to switch to the other ferry tank. What to do, what to do? So pilot 2 slides a wing tip under the sleepy head's plane and taps it a wee bit. That worked, but when it shook him awake, and he was pretty grouchy.
    Seneca 1 on the way across, has that new fangled auto landing gear feature. The diaphragm fails and drops the gear at cruise on this flight, instead of being a back up safety feature on final. What is your next move when you calculate the increased drag shortens the range enough to guarantee a swim? Well, you jury rig a way to hold the over ride lever up, that's what. And you recommend Piper install a locking pin device to hold it in place for the next time that happens.
    Then there was Ron, a 27 year old ferry pilot with scant hair on top. I said, "Hey Ron, how come you are going bald and you're only 27 years old?" He put his hand up on top of his head, scratched around and told me, "Looking for land!"

    Oh gosh. I watched so many of his flights. Very very dangerous adventures to say the least. Sorry to hear about his wife. I had no idea. 😞 One of the best episodes for me.

    Hi Dan! This proves that no rule is 100% strict; in this case, rule #37 dosen´t aply. Cheers to both from NE patagonia, Argentina. (your most recent friend)

    GREAT story! I must've watched him on AOPA, because I had heard the tank inflation story before (I don't recall watching it, but I watch ALOT of aviation vids, lol). 18+ minutes seemed like 3 here - I could've listened to Kerry all night! #37 is null and void with this guy! :)

    There are a few old bold pilots

  • @SVSecondChance

    Yep old bold pilot are every where. But there are no old bold dumb pilots. This is the deal. My father was good friends with a ferry pilot out of Lakeland Florida named Phil. I wonder if that was the other pilot on that crossing that night. I have heard a lot of stories like that from him. Very cool thanks for sharing

      Phil Waldron/Globe Aero. The story I wrote concerned Globe Aero but under the prior owner named Joe Wolfe, who fell asleep in the Navajo.. Joe lost his life flying a Tomahawk to Florida and had a double magneto failure at night. He aimed for an island n the New River in North Carolina, touched down then hit the only tree on the island.

    Charles Lindbergh went for sigle engine as twin engines doubled the chance of an engine failing, so single turbine engine would be better than twin piston in my books every time.

    Bold pilots are who made aviation what it is today...without Bold pilots mankind would have never flown and aviation would have never progressed. A small fact that is overlooked by the purveyors of that saying.

    Great storyteller. But why are we celebrating a high risk, throw caution to the wind pilot???

  • @clarkkent7999
    @clarkkent7999 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    As long as macho risk takers don't jeopardize the safety of non accomplices, to each his own. Personally, don't believe that's the only way to make life worth living.
