    In this video we go over a drill to help eliminate one of baseball's most common hitting flaws: Dropping the hands before swinging.
    Dropping the hands hurts us in a big way causing us to lose power for the mere reason that we are losing leverage, which is one of the biggest sources of bat speed in the baseball swing.
    This drill is designed to over exaggerate the opposite of dropping the hands where we actually start with our hands low, bring them up to shoulder height and then swing.
    By over exaggerating this move we can effectively start to re-wire our bad habit to do the opposite of what we were doing before. Over exaggeration is key when it comes to breaking bad habits.
    I look forward to helping you improve your baseball in the future!

    I've been working with my 14 year old son on hitting. I noticed he was dropping his hands. I've tried to explain to him over and over that the bat needs to stay back and up, and when he swings he needs to throw his hands in a motion similar to chopping a tree with an axe but I couldn't make it stick in his head. I googled "how to quit dropping hands while swinging a bat" and this video came up. I have never heard of this TH-cam page. No exaggeration, I sent this video to him and he worked on it on his own before I came home from work. Problem was fixed INMEDIATELY!!! He plays tournament ball in Georgia and he immediately began hitting the ball harder in the games which in turn drove in runs. I cannot thank y'all enough for what you're doing here. Not only did he understand what I have been telling him and why now, but this instantly fixed his swing and saved me a lot of money on lessons. I'm certainly not discouraging lessons but this time with him at this point in his life and mine is priceless. Mainly HE saw the improvement due to the results on the field. Again thank you so much.

    I did this with my 7 year old. After no problems the last two seasons with the pitching machine - he hit a slump. To me his swing looked good - but he was missing the ball by a lot. I watched this video and realized he was dropping his hands. We implemented this drill - I am happy to say he went 3 for 3. We just wanted to eliminate the strike outs. Thanks so much!

    Hey Mike. Love your videos. Question for you. I like the load stride swing technique and way of teaching. On the stride you seem to get foot flat on groung. Is there no toe touch? And in the stride that is not your positive move yet correct? It seems you stride staying 60/40 and land with all the front foot down. This whole sequence is my most confusing thing. Stride and stay back? Stride to toe touch and then take weight forward? Uhhh! Please help.

    Question - for BP and live hitting, can starting with lower hands and moving them up help resolve dropping your hands?

  • @BigDaddyDumplingg
    @BigDaddyDumplingg 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Mike, I've spent a lot of time hitting off the tee and I've gotten pretty good. Mostly consistent line drives to all directions and staying inside the ball like Jeter. However, the problem I'm having is translating that to hitting Front toss and Live. I'm more inconsistent with my swings (timing issues- either getting jammed or way out in front, rolling over and popping up), and live BP is worse than front toss. The problems I'm having hitting "live", aren't really popping up during my tee work. So my question is whats the best way to translate tee skill over to live action work?
    On a side note: your videos have been great. super informative and helps a ton. Great explanations. Thanks!

      That's one thing I worry about when I spend too much time on the tee -that I'm getting really good at hitting from a tee but that's not what I want to be, a good tee hitter.

    Hi Mike... I wanted to thank you for all your videos, they have been extremely helpful! you have no idea, I have worked on major adjustments on my swing mechanics: the stance, stride, leaking, head down, even the grip... and am currently working on my weight shift.. to a point that I am batting .500 this season!!! Mike you are totally right! using the mirror and the camera is a great tool for feedback since sometimes you think you are doing one thing and is totally the opposite when you check your own video! Now, there is always room for improvement, and I have found that my mechanics are sound batting off the T and even in the cages, but I keep dropping my hands when I'm in the game! I am going to use this progression drills to see how it goes, but would you know the reason for my mechanics changing from practice to a game? would it be the pressure or not been able to relax? how do I remind myself while in it? (probably I need to try harder the focusing on a small spot on my bat and taking a deeper breath!)

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wanderly Ramirez Wanderly!! You are more than welcome man! Stoked to hear this kind this kind of stuff especially when someone like you takes the time to pay attention to detail and apply it!! Filming/Mirror work is so crucial and really glad you bought into it. Guys even in the big leagues are constantly watching video and working on their mechanics and they do so for a reason.
      The progression drills in this video will definitely help with the bad habit, especially with lots of PROPER repetition. However it isn't uncommon to fall back into bad habits in the game. What happens, whether we like it or not, the game speeds up on us mentally during competition. When things speed up, we tend to revert back to what's most comfortable in our habits. For you, right now, it sounds like that's dropping the hands.
      It happens the same way with all of my students, we make a great change off of the tee, then it takes a little time to get it in side/front toss, then we get it perfect there, then it takes a little time to get it right in BP, then we get it right there, then it takes a undetermined amount of time to transfer the great BP swing into the game. But if you keep working at it and keep doing good reps, the swing will undoubtedly (eventually) make it into the game.
      What you're experiencing now is a struggle with the hands, that "struggle" is your mind making a movement change. The more you "struggle" the more your mind will give into the new move and the less of a "struggle" it will be every day until it is gone!
      It's a very cool thing I've studied in the learning process, something we tend to lose thought of as we get older, but it's as simple as a baby learning to walk. It is simply a new move; they struggle to stand, they stand, they struggle to walk, they walk and so on until they can sprint without thinking about it!
      And yes! The mental focus technique you mentioned will most definitely help speed up the process in helping you slow the game down. Just keep up the awesome work/struggle and it will keep getting better and better!
      Thanks again for another awesome comment too!

    What drills or workouts do you suggest for winter training to become a deadly hitter in the Spring Season?

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Donovan Kenan Hey Donovan, thanks for the question! The simple answer is: It depends!
      If you have a "hole" in your swing of some sort, whether it be mechanically or just having trouble hitting the ball in a certain location, the drills to make you the most dynamic hitter possible will be the most help.
      I would suggest seeing where your weaknesses are, and determine what is causing these weakness and work through them. Note: Make sure you continue to work on your strengths as well. No practice is bad practice if you are working on the right things!
      I know this is a vague answer, but without seeing your swing and knowing your tendencies as hitter, it would be tough to determine what exactly you would need to work on mechanically.
      A great one anyone can do at anytime would be the light bat drill in this video:
      th-cam.com/video/FoCDMMc1H3Q/w-d-xo.html
      It is fantastic for picking up bat speed which undoubtedly will make you a more dangerous hitter (When you make contact, of course! haha)
      Hope this helps out! If you have any other questions or if there's anything I can do to help, don't hesitate to let me know! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    Dropping the hands (hitching) is fine as long as you bring them back up. “York hitched, Foxx hitched, I dropped down a little as a cocking again. The important thing is to not drop your hands to much because that could disturb your timing and rhythm.” - The Science of Hitting by Ted Williams

    +Austin Wallace I have the exact same problem. I do good on the tee but then I get up to the box in a game and do the same stuff that I'm not suppose to

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Everything speeds up mentally in the game. This will make you want to revert back to what's comfortable, aka muscle memory.
      So if you're having an issue, such as dropping your hands, it will take some time to get it so you do it right in the game. The important thing to do is to make sure you are continuously working on the right things until you get it into the game.
      May take a little time, just the way it is.... But if you keep at it, you will get it!
      Good Luck ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    If you see my swing in the cage it looks good but I'm game I get into this zone where I just focus on the pitcher and don't think about my hands or anything I just swing. This results in bad mechanics, any tips

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Think of the game as a tattle tale to your training. The game is where things are at maximum mental speed. This means that whatever you are most comfortable with muscle-memory wise, will show up in the game.
      If you're swing looks good in the cage, keep swinging it! Get the repetitions in and it will continue to ingrain into your muscle memory and will start to show more and more in games.
      The absolute best tip I can give you on this particular subject would be to challenge yourself in the cage/practice.
      Take time to work on your swing and hit bp, but at the end of your practice session, play a game with yourself where you have the opportunity to succeed and fail.
      This will help you mentally train closer to game speed because you are now accountable for your swings. I have video going over an example game I used to play to help explain a little better.
      You can check it out here: th-cam.com/video/xrvIiTMOKaA/w-d-xo.html
      Hope this helps out! Good Luck! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    My son has this bad habit, been trying to get rid of it with no succes, do you think he can try starting his hands low in his stance??

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ikerandres18 Starting with the hands low might help with the short term, tough to say. There have been successful hitters who start with their hands lower than normal as well. As long as the overall mechanics stay sharp there shouldn't be any problem with it.
      Bad habits are tough too and take some time to get over. Struggle is good and natural when breaking bad habits and making changes. Working with a camera is a great tool to use to speed up the process as well.
      Hope this helps! If you have any other questions on this or anything else, just let me know!

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like you simply need to get some good repetitions in to ingrain the move. Everything speeds up mentally in the game and we tend to revert back to old habits.
      The best way to fix this is to train hard the right way and understand that it will be a process to get the move right in the game! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    How come some major league hitters drop there hands? Like Miguel Cabrera, v-mart, jd martinez, etc.... They have explosive power and quick hands.

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alfonso Sanchez Hey Alfonso, thanks for the question! The players that you see dropping their hands are doing so in during the load of the swing.
      They will begin their load down and then bring their hands back up to around shoulder height before forward momentum of the hands happen.
      This video is to help hitters out who drop their hands and don't get them back to the shoulder height position, rather they swing with their hands too low.
      The guys in the majors that you see drop their hands during load do so because it's something they have found as individuals that works for them. They do this for timing, rhythm and because it feels good to them.
      An important note to take from this, is that you can devolop your own style over time, but the basic mechanics still need to be in there. The players you listed are excellent hitters and are excellent because, no matter how they look, they do all of the big things correctly!
      Hope this answers your question! If you have an further questions on this or anything else, don't hesitate to let me know!

      +Alfonso Sanchez those players load down and up... Some load up and down... Some load behind and back ( show me the numbers)... It's all the same... Kind off... They are using the elastic properties of there myofasica to get back to the hitting position ( fighting position) with speed... Just like when people say you have to go back to go forward... You go back to get to the normal with speed.....Its complicated and I'm sure Michael didn't want to get into too many specifics as the baseball swing is extremely complicated but I have time and I figured if you wanted to look into it, I provided enough for you to look it it... Nice video Michael!!! Later....~DM

    Hands have to drop and go back before the swing. Not to a point to where we pop the the ball up but so we can get proper bat angle and trajectory. We don't want to hit the top of the baseball.

    When I swing, I pull my arms and make my arms straight and really low, is there a way to stop extending my arms so far?

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Reality_Gamer Without physically seeing your swing it would be tough to tell you exactly what to work on. However, with most things, over-exaggeration can work wonders.
      For example: If you are having trouble extending your arms too far, do reps doing the opposite with really bent arms. After you've worked on that, slowly start letting your arms relax and it should help the issue.
      It's a vague example, I know, but this progression is extremely helpful especially when attempting to break bad habits.

      I may have a video of me that my coach took to see how my swing is. If you'd like I can somehow email it to you? I just want to be able to hit a baseball being thrown at me. I used to be real good at it, then high school was much different. But if you'd like, I can email you the video?

      I can't send a video through email for some reason, so I am going to upload it to my google drive and share it with you. Is that fine ?

    Is it ok to bat this way in game

    • @ProSpeedBaseball

      All that really matters, concerning things like this, is where we are when the front foot gets down. If we are in a good position we can absolutely do this in a game. However, I would highly recommend doing some simulated games and try it out before. Thanks for the question! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

      First off thx for the reply coach 🤘🏻so we put in the work it’s going well but she still has the bat dragging in there. I was thinking of having her really tuck her front shoulder on the up move.Getting the knob pointing at the catcher. Hopefully killing two birds with one stone. Getting a better load and stopping the bat from dragging in there. Any suggestions? We have also been working the power position with the back elbow. The ball is carrying a good 25’ further, however she’s been pulling a lot or hitting weak pop ups. Thanks for the help coach. 11u

      I’ve watched your this video in the past so we’ve been working for the past two weeks with this. That’s what I meant when I said we’ve put in work. More than 2 days anyway. Thx again

    Ted williams dropped his hands then swung level on the plane of the pitch,swung up to meet the down plane,the last of the 400 hitters he never swung down on a pitch going down,, throwing your hands is horrible too,power comes from rotation not down leverage

    I think Eric Davis would disagree. Also, dropping the hands is a timing mechanism for some.

      He lifted his hands back up before he swung.
