Beautiful visuals. Thundercat’s inclusion was really fun. Adds a lot to the video. Reminds me of what I loved about the band originally while bringing the newer sounds from stuff like song machine.
@MATÍAS YUNGE yeah, I guess that's true. They've definitely hit a nice middle ground with this. I really wish we could see something like Melancholy Hill again, but that was ridiculously expensive to make.
ikr? its like they've always been animated cartoonishly but they added just enough realism and weight to the movements to make it satisfying and strangely uncanny, i love it so muchhhhh
@@rylanmetors473 The phases have gotten kind of weird, but I don't think they've been about art style since probably D-Sides. Plastic Beach had a 3D/live action hybrid video for Stylo and a 2D/3D hybrid video for On Melancholy Hill, and Humanz did the same for Strobelight and Saturnz Barz. I think the phases were mainly for Noodle's redesigns, since she actually aged in real time for a while. There's also the fact that they stopped calling them phases with Plastic Beach (Phase 3), and that because of this The Fall became a part of Phase 3, yet for some reason fans don't consider Humanz and The Now Now the same phase despite the fact TNN essentially plays the same role as The Fall. The clear split off into phase 5 would be the start of Song Machine, in my opinion, but since they haven't actively refered to them as phases in so long I'd say the concept has probably been abandoned.
Greeeeeetings, enchanté, a million blessings. It is I, your grand High Beacon and divine overlord, the Most Anointed and Enlightened One For clarity: it’s Murdoc. Wotcha.
So much character poured into just a few seconds on screen that each character has. The end where you can see 2d, Noodle, and Russel's facial expressions as they're reacting to what Murdoc is doing is just priceless.
I do feel like they have become more accessible. Not a bad thing by any means, but their edge during the early to mid 2000’s made them such a distinctive band in style and mood. Now the cutesy, over the top cartoon antics have made it more approachable and maybe more entertaining, but also kinda generic.
2D is being arrested, Russel is some kind of brainwashed zombie, Noodle is being interrogated by the police, and Murdoc is a cultist orchestrating some kind of cataclysmic event near the Hollywood sign. The absolutely bonkers Gorillaz lore is back, boys!
russel's obviously brainwashed but does anyone have theories on why 2d doesn't seem fully there? i mean, since the beginning of the video he's been flopping around like a ragdoll and had to be wheeled into the mortuary

Gorillaz was the first band I ever got super into, way back when I was like 12 years old. I gravitated to them because I liked how oddball and experimental they were, and found the whole "animated fictional band" idea to be super engaging and interesting. It's been a good 13 years, but I still have so much respect and affection for this band. Never stop being kooky, Gorillaz.
Noodle sure has come a long way from the little Japanese girl we saw in the Clint Eastwood music video. It’s funny how she’s grown but the rest of the band still look like the same age they’ve been at the start.
I always found the Stylo/Do Ya Thing models a bit too real for the characters they're portraying, the Humanz models in things like Strobelite were a bit too jank, but these new models finally feel like the perfect rendition of the 2d art into 3D. Excellent work all around, not even counting into the fact that the song slaps
It was the motion tracking for Strobelite, the same one they used for Sleeping Powder and some interviews. My guess was that they wanted to start doing a show or another album or something with the technology, but too many people didn't like the jank. I like the jank in a way but not for Gorillaz.
@@joezen1693 Last year TH-cam freaked out about making a bunch of movies because it cost too much. So, they gutted their animation department and that killed alot of stuff including this movie. Plus, I heard something about the guy who was leading the project on netflix's end quit and joined another company. All of that seems to effectively killed the project.
Not only the song but the animation was fantastic! While Song Machine brought back the memories of Demon Days, this one brings more the vibe of Plastic Beach. I'm loving this new era of Gorillaz!
Thank y’all so much for delivering on this level in terms of respecting (and raising the standard of) just how incredibly good, intentionally crafted and beautiful made music videos can be.
This is why I always embrace Gorillaz collabing with other artist because sometimes they’ll just blend so well with characters like Thundercat who not only embrace their oddity in music but totally play into the performance and lyrics. Such a great collab I didn’t know I wanted!
Noodle in background: - Denying involvement. - Arguing with police. - Intentionally being difficult. - Refusing to talk. - Collaborating 2Ds statement. - Demanding a phone call (probably realizing 2D didn't accomplish much in his current state). - Listing off things on the phone call. Likely lawyer or fixer. Actually, probably, being the only one present helping their current status.
I respect the fuck out of this, the fact that the narrative is going on in the background as well as the foreground, like noodle asking for a phonecall its little touches like that, which show me this has passion and creative though put behind every frame of this mv
I'm still freaking out over how they've made her actually grow up. She's not itty bitty with bangs over her eyes anymore. I almost didn't recognize her.
@@sharmgidly3497 Pffffft yeah right. Meanwhile everything from Humanz to The Now Now is the most forgettable shit ever on all fronts. Sound, visuals, story telling. All worthless. I'll take this over the shitty 3D models from crap like Strobelite or them just I dunno kind of standing there like in Tranz. Thank god Damon and co have gotten the act back together in Song Machine.
My favorite part is 2D singing the line about being a cow into the phone as the demonic face and logo flash over him. Bet they both were calling murdoc for help tho, though he definitely has ulterior motive at least hes helpin them out.
A - love the song. B - Murdoc is the cult leader. Of course. C - love that Noodles with age goes "backward" in styling of the typical anime. Grungy 00's, colorful/gritty 80-90's, and she looks pretty close to those classic 70's Lupin/Gundam designs.
@@Sir-Cletus In the video I think he's more like Murdoc being Murdoc, and since it's not really despicted what the cult was doing that had to be stopped - even if the woman aging quick wasn't a good sign - it's all open to interpretation, I think. Whether he's the villian that depends on one's personal opinion of Murdoc and cults, I believe. Murdoc did some very bad things along the band's history (have an affair with 2D's girlfriend, bully 2D, other general Murdoc stuff) even if he's also a generally liked character because of how entertaining/relatable he can be. And cults are cults, no matter how well-meaning they can appear to be, so it mostly depends on who you ask and your personal views.
Baseline theory for what the hell is going on here: Murdoc used a cult to perform a ritual to revive what I can ONLY assume to be a former flame of Murdoc's, resulting in Russel getting fried for a bit, 2-D probably got absolutely smashed out of his mind to deal with the stress of it, and this is likely the first Noodle has heard of it, since she's the only one awake, sober, and not in her usual styled outfits. Looks like she was in night clothes and was taken by complete surprise. She's trying at damage control for a situation she had no idea was going on, and is regularly seen in the background arguing with the police and gesturing at 2-D almost as if she's saying "Look at him! Do you really think you can take a SEVERELY drunk man is saying at face value, not knowing that is EXACTLY what is going on, and in strolls Murdoc in A FULL CULT LEADER OUTFIT, WALKING UP TO THE NEWLY REVIVED CORPSE IN THE BACKGROUND! WHO HE THEN PROCEEDS TO PLAY TONGUE HOCKEY WITH!!! Meanwhile EVERYONE in the hospital has seen this go down, cops, nurses, doctors, 2-D, Russel, and most notably Noodle, who appears to be saying something along the lines of "you asshole", realizing they're fucked.
just so u know, when this dropped live, there were some title cards at the start that said that what we see in this music video has not happened yet and that we are able to see it beacause of a time machine or sth like that. it also said something like, that this isnt how it was supposed to go and that this story starts with at the end. so we may get more music videos in the future to explain what happened before this chaos. (sry for my bad english)
I can't wait to see more of the lore from this phase. The animation and looks are so much fun and I love the grittiness of it all while also being colorful
I thought I would hate the change to 3d but this was actually amazing and still high quality. Congratulations to everyone who worked on this. Edit just to clarify, I meant the change to this style of 3d. I know they've been 3d before.
The whole concept of the video was thrilling, the animation, acting, sound and light effects, the implicit story... All blended together in a way that captivated my soul. This song was amazing before, now with the official video my love for it has grown even more!
its quite intuative really watch the behind the scenes of do ya thing video. its effectively mocap meaning theres actually a real person under/behind the animations
I was 19 years old when the Gorillaz dropped Clint Eastwood in 2001. Now I'm 40, and every Gorillaz project continues to blow my mind. And bringing Thundercat on board? Niiiiiiiiiiice. 😎🦍
The fact that I literally grew up with Noodle is amazing, I was a teen when I first started listening to them. Now Noodle and I are very close in age in our 30s. I love this band so much for that
The little “roar” on the world occult is such a nice touch. Genuinely pretty cool. The visuals in this video are really addicting and the 3d models are much better than phase 4
@@Zambles I always thought the line was "they taught themselves to be a cult", but according to the lyrics they're saying occult? feels like a strange way to phrase that sentence
I thought it was “a cult” which I thought was really cheesy and on the nose so I had the opposite experience where “occult” made more sense once I saw that lyric on the instagram posts. Both occult and a cult are pronounced the same essentially so it doesn’t matter too much in the end haha
I swear, Gorillaz is one of the few groups out there that has songs for just about every mood. Not to mention that you're introduced to so many talented artists just from keeping up with them.
absolutely adore how the characters have stylistically developed, I remember listening to Gorillaz when Noodle was just a tiny fiend with a funny hat, probably one of the few times I'll openly accept radical character changes given that she's literally aging through phases.
I also like how she looks more adult here, shes not a teen or young adult anymore, she looks like someone with age in an honestly refreshing way. If that makes sense. Not sure how to articulate it.
0:48 Our Mudz in the background !!! He's everywhere 🛐 Details like these are insane... like Noodle's face expressions while 2d is singing is so cool omg
I discovered gorillaz a bit late when i was 7 but now I'm 15 and a proud fan. I love seeing how many people have also grown up with this timeless band.
Seeing Gorillaz still going on even over 20 years later is nice, especially since it seems they've never really degraded in quality unlike many 90's - early 2000's bands.
Hey Gorillaz fans! I have just released my debut album CRASTI LAND and since Gorillaz are among my biggest inspirations, I thought I might share the news with other fans :) I have worked very hard on this album and I would appreciate every single listen and review, thank you! Have a great day!
i love how Gorillaz is still relevant after, how many years now? since 1998 so it's been 24 years, that is just astounding to me. and they're still getting new fans! i introduced one of my friends to them and they became immediately obsessed. i genuinely love this band and it was such a big part of my upbringing, i hope they continue to prosper :))
So effing true bro - and not only their ever-relevance in music but how their music is always fresh and sounds modern no matter if you’re listening to Clint Eastwood era gorillaz, demon days, plastic beach era, whatever - it’s always got that sound that seems like it could have been released yesterday! Plus I mean Jamie hewlett’s artwork is fucking fantastic
I think that the reason why gorillaz is up there among my favorite bands is because they switch music genres all the time, and since I love every type of music but get easily bored they fit perfectly with me. Also the lore... nothing's better than good lore
I just love when they bring in the artists that need some love. I remember Thundercat being a opener for Red Hot Chili Peppers during the I'm With You tour, so over looked
I go around youtube collecting music videos and putting them together in a playlist I call MTV. th-cam.com/play/PL4i-zwmw5MNrC5VugA-0-rRKiCgQUUMS2.html have a view and pass it on.
I feel like this taps into their dark origins, with Kong Studios and the zombies everywhere. Interesting touch that only Russel and 2-D have that "occult mask" shown on them, one being pretty much gone and the other on his way there, and then Murdoc coming with that attire (Noodle, poor lady, needs a break). Makes me wonder what lore will they go with for this single/album. The animation and special effects on this one are just perfect. Also, this is one of their songs that got to me in the first hearing. I love the classic tones used in this, pretty dark, and the lyrics are just amazing.

this music video was absolutely amazing! the 3D models look amazing, especially when in motion, and the song is still a banger. i wasn't crazy about noodle's new haircut t first but it looks fantastic on her in 3D
The animation, the music, the compositing and above all the haunting beat together with these sick visuals! .... Absolutely God tier!!! Forever my favourite band!!
I feel the same. Every music video they make has such a tremendous amount of effort put into it. Their work is so humbling at times, but also so motivating! A perfect blend of cashmere and gold!
It’s just amazing how Gorillaz have evolved with the times. It’s like their music fits perfectly with every year that passes, and their stuff never gets old because it’s like they play different genres, but when you hear it, you still know it’s them because the songs still have that classic Gorillaz sound, and don’t even get me started on the art and lore! To keep a story going for 20 years in SONG (not even a book!) and to keep it interesting, to evolve the art style to fit with each year while keeping their original look- I mean, it’s just amazing. It’s also amazing that they have fans of all ages and that they adapt their music to not only keep older fans jamming out, but so many new, younger fans as well!!
Well said! I grew up listening to this band, I turn 21 in May. It feels like they grew up alongside us for sure. And here I am, I found this banger last month. Cheers. 🤘
They’ve tried the 3d style in the past, and it usually never compared to the 2d style, but I feel like this is gonna be different. The models, the movement, all of it is just so good. I’m glad they’re moving to 3d if it’s going to look like this
CGI is evolving, but it's still in its infancy from what a professor told me. Films like Spiderverse, the Bad Guys, Hotel Transylvania, Paperman, and the upcoming Puss in Boots are proof that we're scratching into a deeper layer of what we can do with CGI, giving wooden CGI models a 2D look and movement. So seeing the Gorillaz embrace this style is all the more welcome in future projects.
@biuor su I dunno if I'd go that far but dog's performance has grown on me like bloody weed in Humboldt County XD I'd DEFINITELY support having him a regular collaborator
The storyline, the animation (I especially love 2D’s look), and just getting to see the band again after Song Machine made my entire day! And now that I know that this video is how the cult turns out in the future, I can’t wait to see how it all led to this #forevercult

@@spritemon98 It got lost in the comments, but I’ll retell as best I can. Before the video premiered, they gave more background on what the video was gonna be about. Basically, the band had to leave Kong Studios for maintenance and checked into this old mansion in LA. Murdoc suggested they start a cult; the band wasn’t sure at first, but they eventually agreed and hoped to do some good with it. The video is the result of their actions. The events of the music video haven’t happened yet, they’re future events and the end result of how their cult played out. So the rest of the videos for this album will probably be leading up to the events seen here in Cracker Island. Hope this helped!

@Jera Always happy to share Gorillaz lore! Moon Flower is a new character in the current phase, Phase 7. She's their next door neighbor in their new (temporary) home in California, as explained by 2D in his podcast, The Stuart Potcast lol Murdoc made eye contact with her once over the fence, and immediately had the hots for her. So much so, that 90% of the reason for his forming a cult in the first place was out of a misguided attempt to get her attention. Moon Flower happens to be the leader of her own cult, the Forever Cult, so naturally, Murdoc decided the best way for her to fall madly in love with him was to create a competing cult to impress her--hence their name, the Last Cult! Prior to the events of this music video, Moon Flower doesn't take much of interest in Murdoc at all, beyond mild annoyance at his constant spying on her and one-upmanship (much to his disappointment). It would seem she DOES take an interest in 2D however, as he's frequently invited over. This interest is very blatantly an indoctrination attempt, though, but Murdoc is incredibly bitter over it all the same. Lmfao Interestingly, Moon Flower appears to be able to conceal her real age to those around her--or at least, in Murdoc and 2D's case, anyway. According to a TH-cam short from Murdoc, he had absolutely no idea he was kissing an older woman at all, and instead only saw her the way she initially looked when removed her hood. For what reason she's started paying attention to Murdoc, or would even want to keep up this illusion with him, is still unknown. Very weird. Sorry for the rant, but I hope this was helpful! Currently, most of the story for Phase 7 is unfolding through the official Instagram, Discord, TH-cam shorts, and 2D's podcast. The last one is especially useful for bits of information about Moon Flower, since 2D hangs out with her so often heh

Yea they go through phases and I think this is phase 7 iirc

Russell has always been partially supernatural, especially with Del.

Agreed, but I wish they'd go back to fully animated videos. They look so weird next to actual humans
It was the motion tracking for Strobelite, the same one they used for Sleeping Powder and some interviews. My guess was that they wanted to start doing a show or another album or something with the technology, but too many people didn't like the jank. I like the jank in a way but not for Gorillaz.

@@Sir-Cletus Yes.

Humanz has some incredible tracks on it,
The Now Now does too and has two of my favourite tracks in it,
Song Machine was extremely exciting and nearly every track is amazing
Aswell as the singles like this and the three songs under Meanwhile
They just been getting better and better, constantly evolving, doing exactly what Gorillaz does best, experimenting and creating unique sounds
@@BassBanj0 Yeah I don't really know either, maybe it's the shift to a more mainstream hip-hop style, but Humanz didn't really do much for me other than like 2 songs, and I distinctly remember making it through 10 mins of The Now Now and having to turn it off, and I haven't really listened to any of the new stuff since. I did hear one of the tracks on Song Machine and enjoyed it a little bit, but I just find the appeal of earlier albums, particularly Demon Days, to be a lot more my style.
@@BassBanj0 Everything after Plastic Beach was pretty mid with the exception of a handful of tracks in my opinion.

Im sure they'll mix many different styles as they always did

Murdok is about 50 years old, the kiss with that grandmother is not strange
Yep, 56 to be exact! So no, it definitely wouldn't be too strange to see him interested in Moon Flower (the old woman @ the end)
Thou doth protest too much..
also. he approached her gently. that´s weird.
@@glferris716 WHO? /genuinely asking who Moon Flower is
@Jera Always happy to share Gorillaz lore!
Moon Flower is a new character in the current phase, Phase 7. She's their next door neighbor in their new (temporary) home in California, as explained by 2D in his podcast, The Stuart Potcast lol
Murdoc made eye contact with her once over the fence, and immediately had the hots for her.
Lmfao
Interestingly, Moon Flower appears to be able to conceal her real age to those around her--or at least, in Murdoc and 2D's case, anyway.
