    I visited Indianapolis in May of 2019. The first thing I noticed was the high humidity there. I'm from SoCal where it is very dry for most of the year. I also noticed that beyond the tree canopy the only thing visible was the sky! There are no hills or mountains to view in the distance. Only the downtown section has building structures that compensate for the lack of visual landmarks! I also observed that taxi service was very sparse and I had to wait up to thirty minutes for a taxi that was either corporately operated or independently so! The cab fares also differed from one taxi to the next even though my destination was always the same!

      @LivingInIndianapolis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Certainly more humid here just like the rest of the midwest. Very different than the SW. Taxis aren't big here except the downtown area. Uber and Lyft are everywhere though.

    Most violent crime is among familiars. Being mugged/robbed/assaulted by a stranger is quite rare. Property crimes happen, but they're not that common either, & usually make the local news when they occur.

      The city couldn’t support the massive construction required. The would be no subway systems, so it would be either surface or elevated. We just built a new Red Line bus which cuts through the streets like a trolley system (best approximation) and it was a nightmare to build, among other things. And that’s just one line of that nature in the city. Closest we get.

    I appreciate what you do Jason, the videos are excellent. But anyone wanting to live here needs to give their head a wobble and seek medical attention. It’s a dump in 35% of the city, in the middle of nowhere, has a massive drug problem and you have to drive literally EVERYWHERE. Even getting some milk involves a massive drive for most, that’s nuts. That’s why I saw so many obese people, it’s not their fault, the city design and volume of fast food outlets make it impossible not to get fat. The suburbs are dull as piss water too, nothing to do, hence the car gets used every day without fail! Anyway, im not a hater, peace ✌️

    Interesting video. Trust it was made in an effort to show objectivity when compared to the city's asset base. Must say, the negative positioning didn't resonate very well, as it appeared to be groping a bit and lacking in statistical backstory. As an example, we remain the second most affordable big city in America (to Memphis) across numerous metrics. Housing and commute time being two that you attempted to qualify, but both are stand alone assets. Every city in the northern hemisphere has darker winter nights than summer and, the further north, the darker they are. Not a singular, one off negative.
    Crime is a problem and, as you correctly pointed out, statistically concentrated in less than 10% of the metro's geography. Suspect this parallels the pattern of every major city. Anyway, as an advocate of the city, just wanted to point out the "stretch" associated with trying to create balance. I do enjoy your explanations, though.

    • @LivingInIndianapolis
      @LivingInIndianapolis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct. This was made to show some objectivity. The goal of my videos isn't necessarily to show all of what's good about Indy (although there's quite a large number of good reasons to live here) but some of the negative as well. I speak and work with many people from other parts of the country and they can't quite get some of the smaller detailed pieces about what it's like to live in this area. Many of the negatives are subjective (not negative for everyone) and certainly aren't necessarily unique to Indy or the area. But, if you're from southern California or Louisiana many of our everyday experiences in the midwest are novelties. Negative? Maybe... Positive?... Maybe. I'm just making an effort to point things out to people who aren''t familiar and can't easily find this information. Really appreciate your thoughts and comments. It's good to know there are people who live here that are passionate about the quality of life here that can be easily taken for granted by some.

    • @LivingInIndianapolis
      @LivingInIndianapolis  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've mentioned that multiple times through videos in the past. It depends on where you are in the northern suburbs. How far east or north that can make a difference. The furthest reaches can take an hour. Other areas you may be looking at as little as 30 minutes to International

    I experienced this wonderful city through a long term relationship with somebody who was from there, so-I went to weddings, funerals(the morning of the flight back to Ft Lauderdale I filled up the rental car in the dark of pre-sunrise and 1 degree Farenht !) always stayed at The Canterbury, ate at least once per trip at St. Elmo's , went to Broad Ripple , walked through Union Station, and spent time walking around Monument Circle. I experienced Brown County and also Zionsville (the Significant Other grew up there) but Winter trips were a battle of enduring severe cold for a week or less , then flying home to warm south Florida. I'm unsure if I could take their cold, grey winters with frozen dirty ice cycles hanging from my car. But my Indy trips ended when the relationship ended in 2001, so I am 20 years out of date. Still, one of my favorite cities in the USA.

      Yes, it is often called “India no place”, not a lot of character, lots of strip malls, chain stores and no real ethnic anything, in many ways the entire city is like one big suburb (the downtown has great sports venues, but zero bustle or vibe of any kind). May depend on your life stage as for families many options for slower pace living in suburban style homes (in city itself are no true city neighborhoods as most people from other cities would describe, overall the area is not densely populated and spread out). Friendly people but boring is a word many younger people use to describe. All what make of it, of course, is easy to feel like seen all/done all after short time. Is part why Indiana has “brain drain” from its well regarded colleges for younger professionals.

    I used to work at a web company that at the time had an old school building off East Washington Street in this cool old neighborhood. I think it was called Irvington or something like that. I was only there on a 90 day gig. This was in the mid 90s when I worked in the IT field.
    Anyway, I'm wondering how it is there now.
    The school was like stepping back into the 60s with the furniture and such.
    East Washington from downtown for quite aways was not the best area to be around, especially near downtown. This place was like 40 blocks from downtown and you made a right turn and then another and you were there. I loved that old place and the neighborhood reminded me of where I grew up in a small southern Indiana town south of Nashville Indiana about 30 miles. ❤️

    I've been apart of this city most of my life. I left for 9 years for the Army but not long after I got out I came back home. Still live in the same Neighborhood near Speedway. Love my 4 seasons and people are still mostly kind all around town. My 2 biggest problems with this city is IPS (Indianapolis Public Schools) and people trying to make public transportation like Chicago. This city is already built. Shoving an oversized metro plan won't work here unless you level a good chunk of the city. Public schools. Trust me go Private. They shut down most but inner city schools and even then they just pass learning packets. It's a real let down. Thank god all my kids graduated now.

    I lived on the outskirts of Indy in a community of Lawrence 1971-1972 and I thought Indy was awesome. Honestly, it’s no longer the city it once was in 1972. After the closure of Ft Ben, our new school evolved into a school for troubled kids which is now closed. Indy is just as bad as St. Louis in some places.

      Good Lord. Not thinking a place can change in 50 years is really odd. Lawrence is a-ma-zing! Best Spanish language immersion program in the public schools in the country. New theatre. Multicultural-Latin, Korean, German. Arts district. Decommissioned military base, but 2,000 acre state park. Pete Dye golf course. Monarch destination.

      @@jdmasur732 I did a Google check on Craig Jr High which was a large new school in the early 70’s and it’s closed unless it’s been put to other use. We lived in Lawrence because of Indy’s problems and there were riots in the cafeteria every week. The wildest kids I knew were from the military base from all over the world. Lawrence was the classiest side near Indy and some of the kids truly earned their name as military brats. Some parts changed not for the better. I’m glad to hear some parts of Lawrence managed to hang onto some of its aristocratic culture. This is what attracted my folks to Lawrence. All of my grandparents were aristocrats.

      @@BL-no7jp well, la-di-da! Aristocrats? Between 465 and our house, you see the community of typical America's military base towns-used car lots, pawn shops, trailer parks and strip clubs, along with ethnic restaurants like Korean. Craig is repurposed into an administrative building. The dilapidated base housing was demolished after 1995 decommissioning, replaced with a microbrewery, upas ale apartments, condos and zero lot line houses, some brick homes and some apartments, including 55+. South of Pendleton Pike can be sketchy, still.

      @@jdmasur732 I live on E 46th and it was mostly peaceful. As a teen, there was plenty to do. My father thought my sisters and I were having too much fun so he moved us out in the sticks not far from l-70 in Illinois where nothing changes. There were some very wild kids at Craig but it was an excellent school. I bowled in the championship team. The Indy city limits was about 75 feet from where I lived. My neighbors attended different schools than my family.

      Paoli Peaks in Paoli, Indiana is one spot. Perfect North Slopes in Lawrenceburg, Indiana is another. However, if you're a big skier or snowboarder these won't be terribly exciting. We don't get much snow so most is manufactured and the runs are quite short. They're great places for beginners though. There are also some ski resorts in Michigan.

      @@LivingInIndianapolis North indiana gets a ton of snow, north indiana gets 40-70 inches per year, but Thank god I don’t deal with that much, here in Indianapolis, it’s only 5 snowstorms each year, but during the winter, it’s always snowing but they don’t accumulate due to warm ground temperatures.
