What's the 44 Club you may ask? Well it all started in the outro of this video • HOW TO BOTTLE FLIP (ON... where we wondered if anyone was still watching the video at that point, and to comment 44 (Scott's fave number) if they were. Brett then said 44 Club get on board and the rest is history. The 44Club is the official How Ridiculous fan club made up of people who love our videos and watch them right to the very end. We've even got 44 Club merch now! So yeh, that's the story. Pretty random but good fun at the same time.
We are passionate about seeing children released from poverty and we would love you to consider sponsoring a child with Compassion. A big thanks to the awesome crew at the Gravity Discovery Centre in Gingin for letting us use their 45m leaning tower for our own experiments. If you wanna head out there and check it out, it's not far from Perth. Western Australia: gravitycentre.com.au/leaning-...

So many flies I was itchy
The flies could be due to the massive amounts of watermelon you've smashed on that pad

I always wonder the same thing. Bees… bees also. Huge Australian Bees.
Analyzing a screenshot from 0:01, I took a pixel-precise measurement of one piece of tape's width (we'll call that TW). At 1:03 we find that 1 TW = 48 mm. Using Photoshop to measure the screenshot, I found out the length of the table is 21 TW, or 1.008 m from edge to edge. The depth of the side bars of the table is 1.5 TW, or 72 mm.
At 1:12, we find out that one layer consists of parallel strips, aka "The Old Meshy." It appears that each strip of tape goes from the bottom of one sidebar, across the top of the table, and down the opposite side bar. So each strip is 0.072 m + 1.008 m + 0.072 m = 1.152 m long. The layer going one way uses 11 strips, or 12.672 m of tape. The other layer uses 12 strips, or 13.824 m of tape.
Therefore, the average layer uses (12.672 m + 13.824 m) / 2 = *13.248 m of tape.*
At 4:10 we learn that after each go they just replace the tape in the square that the bowling ball created. Accounting for overlap of replacement strips, the length of tape necessary to replace one strip appears to be about 8.5 TW, or 0.408 m long (4:07). They replace 4 strips total (two per layer), for a total of 0.408 m x 4 = *1.632 m of tape* replaced for the two-layer go.
At 5:23, a similar sized square is made by the ball. There are 4 times more layers to replace, so 1.632 m x 4 = *6.528 m of tape* replaced for the eight-layer go.
At 6:50 we see a narrower rectangle formed by the ball. Accounting for overlap, two of these replacement strips appear to only be 6 TW, or 0.288 m long, and the other one seems to be the standard 0.408 m long. Therefore the average replacement length of tape per layer is ([0.288 m x 2] + 0.408 m) / 2 = 0.492 m. This is the sixteen-layer go, so that is a total of 0.492 m x 16 = *7.872 m of tape* replaced.
At 7:38 we find out that the last go is "100ish layers". It's hard to tell how many strips of tape are used on the last half of the layers, because the grid pattern becomes solid tape somewhere in the time-lapse at 7:27. This is where some speculation really sneaks in. As best as I can guess, they continue to follow the grid pattern as long as possible, but it becomes so *thicc* that the spaces between parallel strips goes away. After all, they probably quit trying to line the tape up perfectly. I would guess that they applied extra tape to the last few layers to give it that smooth solid finish on top. Let's say that extra tape makes up an additional 2 or 3 "average layers" of tape length. This gives us a total of 102.5 "average layers" of tape length on the table.
We also see that they go all the way around the sides several times to hold the strips down. My guess is they wrapped the sides 5 times, for a total of 1.008 m x 4 sides x 5 wraps = *20.16 m of tape*.
Time to add everything up... (102.5 average layers x 13.248 m per average layer) + (1.632 m + 6.528 m + 7.872 m of replacement tape for the holes) + (20.16 m of side wrapped tape) = *1,394.112 m of duct tape used.*
*Almost 1,400 meters!!*
Fun fact: This would be about 26 roles of tape if the roles are a standard 54.8 m length. This amount of tape would reach from the top of the 45 m tower to the ground almost 31 times!
And before any of you comment that I have too much time on my hands or I have no life... I only spent two hours on this math and I bet most of you spend more time than that scrolling through Instagram or playing Fortnite everyday.
God bless!

You know, the flies were all attracted to the White shirt. Maybe bring a few huge white sheets and attach them to the fence while filming. It might keep the flies off of you.

Debug or Coachroach?
Duck and duct are both acceptable. It was originally designed to waterproof ammo cases, because water rolled off of it "like water off a duck's back" and after the war, people realized how good it was at sealing air ducts.

Aluminized tape is used for ducting. During WWII, when the tape you're referring to was created, it was called Duck Tape due to water resistant properties. It is actually quite s**t for A.C. ducting.

I love how you b=never know what ur doing in the outtro.......

I really think that the pattern changed whether the ball went through or not. With the grid, the ball only needed to put clean tears in a few strips of tape, but with the solid pad, the ball would need to punch a hole directly through the tape.
Jmandawgfan yeh the mesh approach was to help us only do half as much haha, then we realised it wasn’t nearly as good as going the whole hog... so off we went with bulk

Ducktape is the original name from a cloth that was called duc or duq and that ended up being covered with adhesive as tape for many purposes between the war.
Ducttape is a later variant of it and it is not especially good at sealing airducts as it is flammable and ducts can get hot. But it sounded "more plausible" to people not aware of the history and thus became a common vernacular term for all sorts of adhesive covered clothtapes.
The flies are from all the watermelon pulp mashed into the sand!

I don’t know how much you brought but I do know you have to emphasize the T in ducTTTTTTTTTT tape
The original name is Duck Tape, Johnson & Johnson produced it during WWII and the soldiers called it Duck Tape because it was green and waterproof. Duct Tape is a knockoff version so they could get around trademark laws.

My God the flies! How satisfying would it be to swing one of those electrified bug-zapping tennis rackets around the tower? It might be more therapeutic than popping bubble wrap!
As an armchair physicist... I challenge the mesh as a valid test of the tape...
With the mesh, the force is only being taken by an area equal only to the width of the ball...
However on the final drop you added an additional layer(s) across the whole table... and in doing so... enabled the force to be drawn out to the whole table...
So...
I challenge you to try again...
And if mesh, then mesh without, at low layer count. Then again low layer count WITH a whole table layer.
I posit (yeah fancy word right?) that with the "whole table layer" that you give a greater surface area to transfer the energy... and that may give fewer layers greater capacity to resist.
Let me know how you go with that.
P.S. Gaunson, keep going with your big words!... articulation is important when clarification is required.
One does not simply just uses a mesh when using DuctTape, one uses as much as it needs, how it needs it.
Plus duct tape is very strong lengthwise but rips very easily on its width. The top layer made it so there was no exposed edges to start a tear making the whole structure stronger overall. If there were no edges in the beginning the results may have been different. just a thought.
I completely agree with this conclusion, and I call their results into doubt. I don't think that 100 layers of mesh would have stopped the duct tape, and I agree that a smaller amount of layers of complete coverage would have stopped more. Although, they need to strengthen their attachment point, as if you noticed that was their point of failure on that drop
Yep, I was thinking the same. Glad you were the one to type it all out though 😂
I had the same thought the mesh layout isn't that strong unless maybe they added in a cross pattern as well. They should have just made it full but that is more work so they went the easier way lol
Flex tape vs Bowling ball and Giant dart.😁👌✌️👍
