Very informative video! Thanks! I can't help but think that a large chicken farm like this could/should afford a very small tractor with an auger to save these poor grad students arms and backs ;-D

Thank you for your concern for our students! The farm was and is very supportive in every way possible to include putting up with us getting in their way so that this research could be done.

do you have to bring chickens indoors at night?

they will put themselves to bed at night, all you have to do is "close the door" to predators

I love seeing stuff like this, but such smart people wearing masks while alone and outside is unfortunate. Keep up the good work though 👍

Wouldn’t this be a liability by inviting wild birds to be closer to the poultry houses? I would think avian flu could wipe out an entire barn.

From Leonie Jacobs: Avian Influenza is carried by migratory birds, mostly water fowl (hosts to the virus). Forested areas are not their preferred habitat, they prefer open grassland and accessible water, like ponds. Yes, these birds could infect other species of birds that do dwell in trees, but if you allow your poultry outside, they possibly may be more protected from water fowl in a forested area, compared to open grassland! However, I am not aware of any research that has confirmed that.

@@virginiaforestlandowneredu309the real truth is that germs don't cause disease. Unhealthy conditions do. Magical little beings aren't making anyone sick

@@stinkbomb13maybe but masks have nothing to do with preventing disease
