Working on trying to understand the RS7000, this is the first piece I've created using it. Perhaps not the best, but... I had to start somewhere. I find it to be a terribly confusing groovebox (even more so than the Spectralis perhaps!)
The RS 7000...the big sister of the Rm1x...

Hey, I enjoy all the comments! So keep them coming :) I saw you said you have the RM1x. I had considered it - but the RS7000 seemed interesting due to the sampling. RM1x is a nicer, more compact box though!
Don't give up on the rs7000. It is pretty once you get the hang of it. The midi delay with varying midi note is an amazing addition along with. The other variations you can add at the top, forget what it is called. Even the filter is pretty smooth. Digging the song!
Very good composition. I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices how nice your vids "look". It really sets the mood for each of your tracks. Almost first-person-ish, especially from the other angle. Keep em coming.
Don't worry about the thumbs down, they are just jealous or ignorant of your efforts. Great vid and recording btw.

Wow, this is a beautiful composition (as always!) and especially one of the best I've heard on this machine. It's really hard to find good videos of this machine on TH-cam. This deserves some front page action. ;) Plus, the actual video is beautiful too. Do the lights blink that much or is it just the camera having a hard time picking up the LEDs?

Thinking of getting one of these but stalling on my decision after hearing they are notoriously confusing. Wow! This video is presenting me with a dilemma as as the music made on it is so damn inspiring!
Aw thanks! The funny thing is... I don’t like this or my other RS7000 tracks that much.
That said - I think it’s a fantastic device. I wouldn’t say it’s too difficult to use personally. I thought the Squarp Pyramid was difficult and annoying to use. Parted with that quickly. The RS sounds great and is an excellent sequencer.
Maybe the Deluge is the only thing I’d consider instead. Well, besides the Spectralis, which is still the best sequencer out there IMO.
You can always buy and sell it for not much loss. Very very very good device.
What would you get instead?
Oh wait - I thought this was my other track. I liked this one alright actually, hah. There's another one that's a bit more popular that people seem to gravitate towards for some reason.

This is so good. Incredibly inspiring, and totally my style of music. I wanted to ask, aside from the Spectralis, which is too spendy for me, would you recommend the rs7000 as a first groovebox? I primarily work in Ableton Live, but I would like to get away from the DAW some of the time. I recently got a hardware synth (Minilogue) and would like a hardware groovebox/sequencer as well. I find the limitations introduced by hardware to be super helpful for creativity. I've considered an EMX or even a new Electribe 2, but I really like what I'm hearing here. Anything else for ~$450 you think would be a better purchase, or should I pull the trigger on a rs7000? I make downtempo/ambient/chillout type music, so this video and your other rs7000 video makes it seem right up my alley.

+downtempo Hey downtempo, Thank you on your purchase! I find people are more likely to buy the instruments than the music (but that's okay. I learned what to buy from videos on youtube as well). But it's always strange when someone says, "I love your music so I bought the instrument..." lol.
Anyway, Yes. RS7000 would be my second choice aside from the Spectralis. Hands down. The EMX is fun, but it's very limited with 5 monophonic parts plus drums. The ESX is probably better if you're good at sampling and enjoy it (I don't). The MC series are okay, but they frustrate me because of how patterns and patches are saved independently. I like to be able to save my pattern with all edits in them.
The monomachine may also be worth looking into, but I think the RS7000 is a more complete package. I know very little about the Electribe 2, other than to say that I like what I hear, but I've also heard it has some frustrating limitations.
I have heard people say (yeah, this is all anecdotal) that the RM1X 'sounds' better, but I believe the RM1X and RS7000 have the same internal synthesis engine (i.e., ROM based), yet the RM1X has some issue where you can't hear the music when recording drums in grid mode or something. I don't remember what the exact issue was. If it was the same thing as the RS7000 without sampling, I'd totally have gotten it.
One thing to note is how big the RS7000 is. And it isn't exactly the easiest device I've used. I often feel uninspired by it (hence why I have so few videos of it), but I think that's because I have the Spectralis and really love working with that far more. If I didn't have that, perhaps the RS7000 would be used way more often...

+MIDERA Yes, very helpful. Really appreciate it. I noticed from the videos that you have a Spectralis 2. Do you have experience or an opinion regarding the Spectralis 1? I see those available in a price range I might be okay with, especially if it would be a more inspiring tool than the rs7000.
+downtempo You've picked a good time to ask about the Spectralis 1. It's currently being updated rapidly (alongside the Spectralis 2) by Radikal Technologies. They're even planning on implementing some differences to account for the smaller internal storage (128 mb?) when using 'performance folders' which amount to basically up to 200+ folders of 32 songs with 32 patterns each. I think of it like the +drive for the elektron gear.
Had you asked me a month ago, I'd have told you to not buy a Spectralis 1, but today... Yes, it would be worth it. If nothing else, you could load in some small drum samples, then sequence drums in it and use its internal hybrid synth engine (digital oscillators and analog filters), and sequence pads using your minilogue. I sequence a lot of external gear with mine. There's a lot to consider if you're interested in getting one, so definitely look and compare!
Plus, the Spectralis 1 looks a little cooler, but they're both great units. :)
+MIDERA Appreciate the info. I'm going to research both options as much as I can without actually laying my hands on them. It seems like the Spectralis is good at polyrhythms, which is super appealing to me for this type of music. The drums are a very important factor for me, in general.
Drums are sample based on the Spectralis. The RS7000 has internal ROM drums which are all quite good, though you can also bring in your own samples. So you should be able to get whatever drum sounds you want through either. However, with the Spectralis, you are able to send your drum samples through the analog filters, which can be quite cool for some massive sounds. I don't utilize this as much as I should. Plus... the Spectralis has a filterbank (digital), which is pretty awesome to send sounds through. The sequencing in the Spectralis I feel is far superior over the RS7000... but I'm biased. The RS7000 is good, it just happens to not be as good as my Spectralis.

The only thing I'm really proud of is my family, my wife and my child - I'm proud of them, but I feel like I'm never good at anything. I bet there are lots of things you are better at than I am :) You probably can make different music that I can't make, things like that.
I appreciate the sentiment though, but the more you become me, the less you would be satisfied with yourself, because you'd start approximating me and my life. Be yourself!

I figured, haha. Which is probably a good thing since it would probably bug the heck out of you when you're working on the machine for any extended period of time. Still, it makes for a cool video. My wife owns a D51000 too (and a 35mm lens). I would use it but I don't have a tripod... I made one with our broomstick and duck tape one time a few months ago. Too much work, but it was cool in a MacGyver sort of way. ;)

I think its a beautiful track. Are all the sounds internal, or did you also use samples? I'm looking at getting one of these, but mostly as a sequencer (for other gear) that can also make sounds. Not so much as a sampler that can also sequence. Does this sound like an accurate interpretation of this instrument' strengths?
Robert Lakeberg hi - yes all sounds are internal, no sampled sounds.
I think it’s a great sequencer, much better than the command stations. I think the rs7000 is one of the best sequencers, though I still prefer my spectralis, but that’s a little more of an oddball at times. The rs7000 is very straightforward but has some great tricks, like mixing up the sequence in real-time, great for drums.
I think it’s actually a pretty good sampler too, maybe doesn’t really mangle the hell out of samples or color them in a cool way, but it’s still good.
The internal sounds themselves are not that bad. If you check out my track “october tears” you’ll hear the drums and how punchy they can be. The FX are pretty good too.

@@MIDERA Thanks man. I actually ended up getting an rm1x. Supposedly the sequencer and sound engine are nearly identical. I already have an excellent sampler, and the price was 200 vs the 800 people want for the rs7000. I'll see how I like it and maybe start looking for a better deal on an rs7000 down the road. Keep up the good videos. I really like your music.
Robert Lakeberg one thing I recall is that recording drums via the grid edit mode is done improperly on the rm1x, in that you can’t hear the song playing while doing this, which originally deterred me from using it and going straight to the RS. Perhaps it won’t bother you. I don’t exactly recall the thing it did wrong, but there are a few forum discussions about it. It certainly looks cooler than the RS7000. If sampling was the only thing missing, I probably would’ve opted for that since it’s smaller and less of an eyesore.
@@lakebergr also curious if this problem with recording drums in grid mode is still the same. I'm considering an RM1X

+BluffMunkey Congrats! Learning curve on this one is right in the middle. Not too tough to get started, but a lot under the hood that can be confusing. Few things to keep in mind:
1) Tracks = parts, Sections = patterns within a 'song', and Style = song. At least, that's how I make sense of it all. Don't confuse these things with pattern vs song mode.
2) Take full advantage of the fx. They're really good.
3) Saving your tracks. Say you've made a pattern on style 01, don't just save the pattern. Save "all", it's easier to save everything. I don't recall what you call it to save that, but I'm pretty sure it's "all". It's just way easier. Saving patterns require you to name that pattern, and when you come back to it, change it, and have to save it again, you have to input the name again. I don't think you can just 'save over' it.

+BluffMunkey That's the way to do it. EMX plus RS7000 is an amazing combination. For sure among the best.
Suggestion: Use EMX for drums and some leads, use the RS7000 for pads, bass, and extra drums to accent the EMX's drums. The EMX is insanely easy for recording drum parts, plus, the FX are fantastic for that purpose. Let me link you to a piece I did that with (though I did also use the Accelerator)...

+MIDERA Oh I've watched most of your stuff already, and love it! I agree about the EMX, it's such an intuitive and fantastic sounding machine. I've only had it a week or two and not had to look at the manual once. Not quite sure where they went wrong with the new one! Even the limited synthesis isn't really an issue for 99% of the sounds you'd actually use.
Oddly I thought the RS was based on the AN1x synth engine, but I'm pretty pleased it has the MOTIF style patches in there for pianos etc. Doesn't matter how 'limited' they are for these kinds of jams/compositions.

They're basically the same thing, other than the rs7000 has sampling and can record drums during live play (a bug that was never fixed in the rm1x). The rm1x looks cooler and smaller though. Id stick with the rs7000, it's far more capable.

Do you have any evidence to suggest their sound engines are different? I have not heard of this. General consensus on forums is that the RS7000 is better in almost every way. I've never used the RM1X, so I don't personally know.
And you just save your stuff and it's there when you come back, I'd prefer needing to physically save it than have it automatically save anyway. Especially if I'm trying new things on a track. I don't particularly want my old stuff destroyed as I try new things.
rs 7k has better sounding engine than rm1x and its far superior in almost every term, from amount of knobs, polyphony, filters, lfos, efx, etc. All rm1x and rs7k are sample based, they're both romplers... rs7k can sample tho, rm1x not. and the first os for rm1x i buggy as hell, sends random program change command that you cant filter, when you exit the edit menu or do anything in edit menu, or change pattern... The truth is opposite avoid rm1x with firs os, get rs7k if you really feel like you cant live without it, but you need more control.

I think there are two different sounds going on. One is a piano and the other is a synth. I am not with my gear at the moment, but from what I'm hearing, there are two heavily reverbed sounds, a synth and a piano part. Glad you like it. I'll check what sounds I'm using for that later.

So the rs7k must be way more complicted to figure out than the rm1x im sure, i was havin a hard time with the rm1x but only had it a couple days to try, but im getting another and a mc 505, unless i find a rs7k for cheap, your vids are awesome, takes a lot of time to get this good on these machines as with anything i guess. a lot of people that thumb down just seem to be getting some weird power trip from it, i think its a form of insecurity really and almost always those people have no or very few vids themselves, you got your people that try to create or exspress and your people who basically leach of the creative types with their psuedo (spelling i hate it) "official" critiques. Its pretty idiotic. Ive had people threaten me about my vids and get really mad at my ideas or whatever, and it is upsetting sometimes but screw'em ! Their morons. You got great music skills dude ! I like every vid ive sen of yours, i keep looking for music equipment to get and you seem to have the ones im looking at. Great stuff !
Hey cheifmouthnoshut, I believe the rs7k is very similar to the rm1x, but also has sampling. It's a BIG machine, physically. I think that's what I dislike most about the RS7k. I'd almost prefer the rm1x for size, but capacity wise and OS wise, I believe there is little differences between them. I would personally take one of these yamahas over the MC-505 because they are way more capable machines in sequencing. The RS7K is usually more expensive than the MC-505, but I would still consider the rm1x. I don't have the rm1x or the MC-505, so you might want to look further into both of them and how they compare to their counterparts (the MC-303, 808, and 909, and the RS7K). Others could tell you how the RS7K and RM1X differ. There are other great sequencers out there that can be had for good money though too. Consider the Emu MP7. It is ugly, but a good sequencer.
What puts me off about the MC-series (and EMUs as well) is that patch edits are saved outside of the pattern. So saving the pattern does not save the 'sound' you've made. I don't work with presets and often create my own sounds, but wish that they'd save in the patterns. The EMX, RS7K, and Spectralis work this way, but the other machines do not.
And thank you. You're probably right about other people. I've tried to cut back on being visibly upset about thumbs downs or negative comments. I know they're not really worth my time. It is amazing what one thumbs down can do to one's day, even when there are plenty of thumbs ups! I appreciate your comments. Thanks!
***** ya I'm not enjoying the sequencer in the 505 much I find it boring because of its limitations compared to the yamahas , the rm1x I tried was WAY cooler on the sequencer , like different length tracks in different time sigs at the same time , I really much prefer that to the 505 sequencer , so I'll save up for a yamaha
