I spoke with Nuno about that opening riff. I asked if it was inspired by Jimmy Page/Zep, and he replied something to the effect of 'Of course, that was just me feeding on some of the scraps that Jimmy left behind for the rest of us' - humble to the last. Love you long time Nuno
I had the honour of going to an Extreme concert on Nuno‘s birthday the other day and I just have to say that him and the band were so amazing and so genuine and I really appreciate their talents and the way they are with the crowd. Everything was just perfect.
DiMeola has some insane ones. I like how he uses it, as a way to make a different sound for those lightning fast runs, on some of Elegant Gypsy. It can be heard on the acoustic, very clearly, in parts.
3 sides showed off their talent which was worlds ahead of 99% of bands. Especially in their time. The last 3 tracks on that album were the epitome of the bands talent. I remember when that album came out. I was a freshman in H.S. Friends would be blasting Nirvana drooling over them while I'm sitting there thinking, I just don't get it? Are you deaf? Yes music is subjective, but there's a critical way of thinking and understanding the amount of time you have to dedicate to become a great player.
Nuno is so good. The same era as George Lynch, Randy Rhodes and of course Eddie Van Halen. Eddie really captured that sonic boom so many of us at the time were craving. Eddie just always stayed on top. But the other guys are great super talented musicians. Just Eddie captured our mind and melted our ears in such the right way. He blasted our ears thru a portal to a different dimension.
yeah Nuno has been doing crazy alien technical stuff for years and i guess i never thought about it as just muting - it’s picking and incredible left hand machine like hammering off and on - i loved watching him playing so many VH parts, he was a true fan of Ed 👍🤘
Truth... First heard Nuno and I felt something almost similar to how I felt when i first heard EVH. Never felt this with Rhodes, Jake E.Lee. ( my fave ) , Brad Gillis, DeMartini, Yngwie.Mancuso made me feel very hapoy again same way with NuNo.
Muting only sounds cool when you have the rest of the band behind it. Tapping sounds good on its own. That's why it was more popular. You could wow people with tapping at parties, not with muting.
If party wowing is the basis here, then yes. You can sloppily tap anything and wow people with it, but good luck getting muting to sound this clean. Both sound great when executed by masters though.
There are 2 artist who became hit with very slow song, nuno "more than words" paul gilbert "to be with you" people who dont know will think they r playing js acoustic, but this 2 guitarist is bad ass legendary god of guitar
Paul Gilbert, Nuno Bettencourt, and Vito Bratta are on the same level. Paul is more technical, Vito is more melodic, and Nuno is wilder, more anti mainstream.
I gotta say it's super impressive but it doesn't sound anywhere near as nice as tapping. That's why tapping became more popular. Something about that muting sounded so awkward.
There’s a little more to it than that. You also use your fingers on adjacent strings, hitting sorta dead notes, getting that fast percussive staccato sound
I was in your house Nuno live in FedEx. You had a beautiful girlfriend from Australia on New Zealand sending tapes out to California me and your girl had a big make boxes in my truck. I’m not being inappropriate we did we like sitting in the style talking and folding boxes She was a sweetheart and it was very cool. She said she cheers love when I left. I know it wasn’t Gary Chiron‘s house who was you and Hudson but I want to see you from the North Shore man from smack Deb Boston and then go to the video hall and no idea you were that good of a guitar player dude, you didn’t even get old looking older than me I know that not by much OK. Glad to see you guys back.
I do that too! I just put my right hand over the strings on the neck without pressing to hard, anywhere on the neck and just keep them in place, them hit the strings willy-nilly with the puck, and it sounds just like that.
Muting is not "cooler" perse... it's just that tapping can be just a party trick. But holy if you can pull off muting, you're definitely on another level!
Nuno's muting is otherworldly! 🚀
It’s amazing how much of his muting is with legato and it’s still so percussive
@@josephsmith7814 100%. I have a vague memory of hearing years ago that he was a decent drummer. Would not surprise me if true.
@josephsmith7814 YES! Always loved the percussiveness of it verses the greasy legato of tapping/sweeping

Kinda has a Ritchie Blackmore vibe too
Sounds like George Thorogood to me.
Nuno for me…has always been a Nono!
@@filipstefanovski155I thought I heard a little Blackmore too
one of the greatest guitarist of all time!
"Midnight Express" is mindblowing
Nuno's muting leaves you speechless...
Huh? what?!? Come again?!? You must've been muted by Nuno 😂
😂
The bridge in Peacemaker Die is one of the heaviest, slammin riffs of all time.
No it's not, don't be a fanboy...
@@Mike-oz5ppbruh thats his opinion, whats your problem lol. Chill bb
... Yes, you're right @@mrlucius57 and no one should be "forced" upon to change one's opinion..
@@aticknekong5296unless the opinion is just stupid to begin with!
@@aticknekong5296Guess it's a good thing nothing was forced upon them, but keep up that witless victim complex you seem to have.
That Strat sounds great.
Nuno is so under-rated.
Creio que é mais, finalmente está tendo o devido reconhecimento do quão talentoso é.
I thought they got robbed for 3 sides with everything changing, grunge, etc... The third side is a work of art. 🤟
An incredibly overlooked work of art, indeed! Cupid's Dead, damn!!
Yeah unfortunately for them that album came along right at the next turn of music. Great album though!
Yep, right album, wrong place. Absolute genius work of art!!
Nuno is a Beast!!!!!
nuno just to polite... humble man..
'Tis some visitor I thought, tapping at my chamber door, but it was Nuno Bettencourt.
😂
Thank you for this
Rick's facial expressions for the Win!
Nuno rules!
NUNO IS AMAZING!!!!
He's so good ❤
I had the honour of going to an Extreme concert on Nuno‘s birthday the other day and I just have to say that him and the band were so amazing and so genuine and I really appreciate their talents and the way they are with the crowd. Everything was just perfect.
That solo re-energized me
3 Sides was such an amazing album! I used to go to sleep listening to it every night, it was such a journey and so underrated
More Than Words...! One of the Best Guitar Acoustics...and everyone loves the song!
I've always been a big fan of Extreme, ever since my bass teacher introduced me to the song Get The Funk Out! Man i practiced!
Buckethead has literally done this forever he makes his guitar sound like a banjo doing this.
Nunos been doing it since the early 90s tho lol, think that's the point of the video. He's underappreciated.
He's brilliant.
Nuno is Absolutely AMAZING ❤🎉👑👍
DiMeola was muting more cleanly since the days of Return to Forever.
DiMeola has some insane ones.
I like how he uses it, as a way to make a different sound for those lightning fast runs, on some of Elegant Gypsy.

Nuno is one of my favourite. Absolutely amazing, wanna be like him 🤩🤩🤩
All I hear in my head is “IIIIIIII have a dream this afternoon…”
Criminal that he is not spoken in the same sentences of the all time greats
Nuno is the Damp & Squeal king !!
Perfeição define Nuno Bettencourt!
yeah Nuno has been doing crazy alien technical stuff for years and i guess i never thought about it as just muting - it’s picking and incredible left hand machine like hammering off and on - i loved watching him playing so many VH parts, he was a true fan of Ed 👍🤘
I am hearing first time now about Nuno. He is so awesome 😮😮
Steve Hackett atmospheric tapping on "The Musical Box" and "Return of the Giant Hogweed" and "Dancing with the Moonlit Night" shows why it is cool.
The only legend that never grow old 🎉
I was thinking of 3 sides the whole time I 1st heard Rise! What's old is new again! Bring it, Nuno!!
his voice has all that charisma
Nuno is AWESOME!!!
if anyone is in awe of his muting technique they should listen to the solo on play with me and cupid's dead (horn mix)
when I taught Nuno how to play the solo to rise, I had to be patient. Im sure this kid will come around and pick it up though, great potential…..lol😆
Eddie did a crazy muting lick during the heavier portion of the intro on the track "Fools" from Women and Children First.
Perfect head of hair, handsome, and insanely talented.
I hate this guy.
Greatest guitar solo of all time is in Play With Me.
Nuno is phenomenal
Sounds so awesome
Love The Nune ! Second to none
Nuno is such an amazing guitarist, such an awesome style.

Love Nuno, and I am sure He knows perfectly why tapping is sexier than muting
I love the tone he gets from those single coils!

This definitely sounded good on it's own, tapping looks cooler though
Muting like this is WAY more pleasing to my ears then tapping.
Just saw him in kc
Watching the get the funk out and rise solo live is beyond description
You can mute me any day, Nuno! 💜
The strat suites him!

A real guitar master🤘🏼
Bro, that's too damn sick!
Dude I love muting and this vid just reminded my who inspired me to learn to do it
Still Gorgeous
Paul Gilbert, Nuno Bettencourt, and Vito Bratta are on the same level. Paul is more technical, Vito is more melodic, and Nuno is wilder, more anti mainstream.
Looking and sounding😊 ❤❤ 😊
Está muy linda esa blanquita Nuno..!!
Top rock guitarists:
1- Eddie
2 - Nuno
This is undeniable.
Nuno is the GOAT ❤
When "Rise" came out, that muted thing tooked me right to "PeaceMaker Die". That dude could be me.
That was my first reaction too! Two awesome solos but the muting takes then next level!
Nuno is a savage badass! ❤
Steve Morse did this on the solo sections of the Purple shows
Nuno's from other galaxy
I gotta say it's super impressive but it doesn't sound anywhere near as nice as tapping. That's why tapping became more popular. Something about that muting sounded so awkward.
He was ahead of his time, the new Thump technique is all muted like Nuno does here only using your thumb to get double notes
There’s a little more to it than that. You also use your fingers on adjacent strings, hitting sorta dead notes, getting that fast percussive staccato sound
East coast band rocks 🪨 🎸 😎
III Sides was a very underrated album. I completely forgot about the muting on Peacemaker Die! 😅

Hoping Rick brings Michael Romeo someday. That guy is awesome.
Muting has existed as long as string instruments.
I do that too! I just put my right hand over the strings on the neck without pressing to hard, anywhere on the neck and just keep them in place, them hit the strings willy-nilly with the puck, and it sounds just like that.
😂😂
how in the hell he came up with that and did that blow my mind 🤯🤯
Amazing, and done on a Strat!
Legend
Nuno rules😮
It ain't Nuno. (tapping and muting) You are the top of the pile brother!
I don't get why everyone is so blown away by this. It's just legato with muting. If it was all picked, now that would be impressive.
Nunoooo! 🤘
Nuno is great and apparently he knows it.
Nuno’s muting is more shred than my pathetic guitar center chord strum!!!! 🤣🔥
Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee
I Love 3 Sides!!!
The touching of the nose at the beginning... Ricky be strong...
🔥🔥
The original 21st century guitarist.
Three Sides is an underrated album. Extreme got better with every record.
Nuno…what can I say 👉👉👉 👊👍🔥🌶️🚀❤️
I've heard all this before from Steve Morse - When is that interview on the way ...?
Muting is not "cooler" perse... it's just that tapping can be just a party trick. But holy if you can pull off muting, you're definitely on another level!
one cool cat
Ahhhh i see where Tosin was inspired now!!
There is something quite similar that Gary Moore use to play on the 80s albums and lives
When seeing it performed, tapping is so much more visual 🤔
Deff My fav. Gtr player!! And I'm a keyboard player.. 😊
Listen to Triumph’s l”Rock and Roll Machine”. Rik Emmitt’s guitar solo includes a lot of muting
Tapping is only more popular than muting because it's more audible, when you're muting you're literally dulling the sound.
