ActionSA demands a probe into ghost employees within our government!

Today, ActionSA Team Fix SA Members Mpumi Edward and Sello Lediga submitted a memorandum of demands to the Public Service Commission.
Amongst the issues that ActionSA would like the commission to zoom into include: Ghost workers in various government departments and SoEs.
Research conducted by Corruption Watch estimated that there are at least 3,417 cases of unlawful conduct in South African primary and secondary schools, which include ghost employees.
In 2022, the Department of Transport initiated Project Zivese aimed at establishing the total number of Prasa employees. Out of 17 268 recorded employees it was discovered that 3 000 of those were ghost employees and 1 159 employees resigned. South African Police Service is not immune to this criminal element.

It is worth noting that South Africa’s expenditure of 34.5% of its national budget on public sector
wages is one of the highest in the world, yet our state institutions are incapable of fulfilling their most fundamental mandates.
Corruption, cadre-deployment, irregular appointments, wasteful
expenditure, financial mismanagement, underperformance and cost ineffective procurement practices are hallmarks of South Africa’s failing state institutions. It is our great conviction that the commission will be able to unearth some of the obstacles that are supressing the growth of our economy.
In March 2024, ActionSA penned a letter to the Minister of Public Service and Administration: Ms Noxolo Kiviet to investigate issues pertaining ghost employees, as we expected from an ANC deployee, the Minister did not respond or acknowledge the letter.
