    I remember this proposed match well. I remember the computerised result as well. 32 to 28. to wynnum. I may of mentioned this to you in another comments section, but the first club championship match between penrith v Northern pride in 2014 being won by the northern pride was also 32 -28.
    As far as the game goes. MMmmm. I think that 32-28 result may of been a fair result. Both sides may of taken the game a lot lighter than we the public would've like especially canterbury. Their game was based on tough defence through out the season with their eventual win in the GF unlike what it was like [defence wise] in the BRL.
    The players themselves thought it would've been fun, so based on that it would've been considered more of a usa state of origin type of game and not taken very seriously.
    Great video Dan I have waited a long time for an in depth look at this proposed game. excellent work.

      Thanks mate. I appreciate the thoughtful comment. That is very insightful to consider the comparison to the USA 87 Origin game. On one hand it could well have been taken a bit lightly similar to that 4th Origin in 87...but on the other hand, since the comps were entirely separate back then, and Origin had such a far more pronounced us against them at that time compared to now, I have a feeling it would have had the competitiveness of a rep or GF, more similar to the Panasonic Quarter Final between Brisbane and the Bulldogs in 84, but we'll never truly know, but it's fun to hypothesise on what would have been an intriguing match up in a fascinating time in Rugby League history🙂👍🏻🏉

      @@DanmarskyAus yes diffently fun to hypothesise, either way wynnum win. just a quick question for you. I have been looking for a manly v parramatta game won by Manly 5-0. I think it was a mid week game about 1982/83. Do you have any record of it or a recording. My mum and I still bring it up in conversation as how good a game it was.
      Another question for you . I have been looking for a Des Morris try he scored for wynnum running about 40 meters. would you have that in your collection. I became a big des MORRIS fan when I went to lang park for the 1st time to watch east v Valleys and followed him over to wynnum in 81

      @@DarrylSteele69 Yes the 1982 game between Parramatta and Manly was actually won by Parramatta 4 nil I believe. I remember seeing footage on an old Boots n All episode, but unfortunately I don't personally have any footage of that game or the Des Morris try you refer to. Oh yeah Des Morris was a strong player...he's from my hometown Ipswich. Great player and coached that legendary 84 Wynamm side. Cheers mate

      @@DanmarskyAus Yes that's correct about Des Morris and played for swifts as a junior in the local comp. He was my childhood rugby league hero before the king came to the seagulls.
      I'm from Ipswich as well. Wonder if we crossed paths. Where about's [suburbs] did you grow up? I lived in raceview first up, then spent a couple of years in North Ipswich, then goodna and redbank plains before moving to the sunshine coast when I was 16. I attended Nth Ipswich and Goodna state school's and went to Bundamba High. finished grd 10 in 84.
      If I remember correctly Manly won this particular game. I only remember it because I'm a manly supporter.
      Found a website titled "the year that was" from the seagulls website with an analysis on each game for that year
      This particular game looks like the one I'm after with des Morris scoring a solo try against redcliffe at lang park won by wynnum.
      Round 6 - 3/5/81
      Wynnum Manly 20 d Redcliffe 16 (Lang Park).

    Excellent video Dan. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and I certainly agree with your analysis. The King would have been the difference as he was at the height of his powers. Mal Green was very under rated in that team as he was seen as their enforcer. When the Broncos were first established, Bennett tried desperately to sign him. Sadly Mal Green is no longer with us.

    The concern with this Wynnum-Manly team is the fiscal situation. The club were subsidised by the QRL ultimately paying for the contracts of players including Wally Lewis and Gene Miles, yet were bankrupt in 1986 and had to appoint Wally Lewis as Captain/Coach.
    That stated Wynnum-Manly played the game in a free flowing positive style and maybe the only player to out fox the negative play of Warren Ryan's Canterbury team could be Wally Lewis. It was only a bad day with the boot from Terry Lamb and a smart tactical kicking game from Peter Sterling that saw Canterbury defeated in 1986.
    Canterbury played in 3 straight Sydney Grand Finals and scored a combined total 15 points, for some context Manly Warringah scored 18 points in the 1987 Syndey Grand Final and Canterbury out scored this 15 points in each of their Grand Final wins in 1980 & 1988.

    Again another great documentary made I believe that Wynnum would of Beaten Canterbury in 1984 and Parramatta in 1986 plus the English and Kiwi players agreed with Ron Willie who was the Penrith Coach at the time. All those Wynnum players deserved better recognition from the Sydney NSW Rugby league. Especially the ones who didn't get the rep glory.

    Whilst I think this is certainly biased against the Bulldogs and all for Wynnum I can cop this. Parramatta and Canterbury are celebrated as clubs of the 80's and Wynnum should be there as well. Whilst I think Wynnum could have beaten Canterbury in a one-off game or a series over the grind of a season is a different matter. Canterbury had a lot of hard nosed week to week footballers who thrived on the week to week premiership - Lamb, Folkes, Tunks, Kelly, Farrar, C. Mortimer, P. Mortimer and Langmack. S. Mortimer had the best origin career of the Canterbury players and also thrived week to week. Potter in 1984 until his injury in 1986 was a clear no.2 to Jack. Belcher's talents only got recognised when going to Canberra. Where Canterbury had a clear advantage as did Parramatta and Saints of that 1984-85 period and into 1986 for Canterbury and Parramatta was depth. Warren Ryan dropped Conlon, Johnstone, Robinson and Anderson during the season and relegated Brohman to the bench. In the 1984 grand final they had Brohman and Robinson coming off the bench who really made a difference and Gillespie and Leis on standby. Some of these famed Brisbane players ended up getting caught out in the week to week grind whilst thriving in the best of 3 challenges. The big exception being Meninga who was a coleuses at Canberra and as soon as Belcher went to Canberra he quickly displaced Scott as Queensland fullback something he couldn't do whilst in Brisbane. The success of the Broncos came off the back from a newer breed of players or recruited from NSW clubs. The big name players got the Broncos off the ground and slowly but surely they were ushered out of the club. By 1992 there were no BRL stalwarts in that side. What I do like about this vdeo is that it does give Wynnum and the Brisbane premiership some respect even if it somewhat tried to downgrade or diminish some of the players at Canterbury including Lamb among others. Wynnum would have made the 1984-86 NSWRL top 5 ahead of Souths and Penrith respectively whether they would have gpone further is another matter as depth was so important. Canterbury did nullify a backline that had Sterling, Kenny, Cronin, Grothe and Ella. All except Ella in the NRL Hall of Fame and injuries denied Ella of further greatness but was at his peak 1981-85. Some of those Wynnum players awesome names it's hard to imagine we had different competitions back in 1984 and we never got to see these players against each other week to week.

    • @DanmarskyAus
      @DanmarskyAus  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You make very good points regarding the depth and proven week in week out resilience of the Dogs and all the top clubs of Sydney. The video was obviously a look back at the prospect of a one off, or 3 game series between these two great club sides in 84. And jyst as QLD won the majority of the 3 game series' in the 80s with a predominantly BRL based team, it is my firm belief that Wynimm woukd have prevailed albeit in a titanic struggle, in a one or three game series.
      But don't get me wrong the Bulldogs of the 80s were an incredible team and there is certainly no diminishing of any player or team in this video, if that was the perception.

    • @BulldogDynasty
      @BulldogDynasty 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DanmarskyAus And in 1988 a predominately BRL team including 7 of the 8 BRL origin players used the season before was dismantled as the grind of the season which the premiership was won by a Canterbury side cultured into week to week football. There were four box office players Lewis, Miles, Mortimer and Lamb. I think some Wynnum ratings a tad high. A player like Coyne ended up finding his niche in Canberra one who I thought thrived in week to week football. But had to go to the NSWRL to be recognised by the Queensland selectors. Rep numbers can be deceiving. A player like Potter. If something happened to Jack in 1984-85 he's the test fullback not Scott and I really have a lot of time for Scott and what he's fought through. Potter probably keeps Belcher out of the 1986 Tour if he didn't have season ending injury. O'Brien was a dynamic winger just didn't stay on the field enough one of few wingers to handle and trouble Grothe in Grothe's own words. I do think it's a shame the whole Brisbane thing didn't happen sooner and also multiple teams from day one because we missed peak Wally.

    If Wynnum were rated a 10 in attack in 1984 then Parramatta get an 11. Sterling, Kenny, Cronin, Ella and Grothe was the best back line in club footy that Rugby League in Australia could have offered. So much Bias in this video.

  • @guernica8487
    @guernica8487 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wynnum's attack looked so good because most of the competition was God awful. I really don't see any of the BRL teams lacing the boots of those Parra and Canterbury teams.
    The BRL was a vastly inferior comp as evidenced by a combined Brisbane team gaining admission to the NRL as opposed to individual clubs. Call that NSWRL bias but the case is still the same in 2022 and even then they're still poor.
    Some great players come up in QLD as evidenced by Origin but in terms of footballing infrastrucure and the quality of the club and park game, football will forever be Sydney.
