      Yes but the SNES sound chip was a great choice. For example, check out the soundtrack to Donkey Kong Country on its Sony S-SMP. It really stands up to this day, clear and beautiful, when used in the right hands. Its limitations, particularly the available ram made for some clever music as people got the most out of it.

    We regularly sampled from a Megadrive back in the 90’s. One of the great things about megadrive games was that many allowed you access to the games sound library.

    • @AmericansMarryCousins
      @AmericansMarryCousins 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The dark synthy Megadrive sound directly influenced UK Grime that started in late 90s. Uk grime lead on to UK drill. So a lot of music today can trace parts of its roots back to the system. Amazing really.
      Grime Artists would often reference Sega and Sega games in their music too. Only the rich kids had a Snes tbh so it was the everyman console.

      @@AmericansMarryCousins I just preferred Sonic over Mario... and that determined my choice of console. I've been obsessed with the sound of the Genesis/Megadrive synth engine since I played Chakan The Forever man and ECCO Tides of Time as a kid, and I've long dreamed of making a hardware synth based on the YM2612, so its incredible to see it materialized like this and I feel inspired to actually start designing mine. I think I will go for more of a small form factor compact synth with just the chip and a few ICs at the core, so I can put the raw power of that Sega sound in my pocket and take it to jams and gigs. Thank you so much for all of these amazing projects.

    Another great vid Sam, I can only offer two recommendations for this build. First, I'd say keep your eyes open for a 1st gen MD as they are known to have much better sound, and second, i would open the console and see if you can mod the stereo headphone output to a line lever output which should help to clean up the sound, YMMV.

    A lot of the things you show strike me as simply gags. I mean, they work, but the impetus seems to be to simply do something outlandish. But this is a real instrument that yields some really fascinating textures and tones. I imagine it could be in a smaller package, but at this point it is still a real instrument. I had a closeup look at Hugh LeCaine's "Electronic Sackbut" in the local museum. It's one of the earliest known electronic instruments. I may shake my head in the sprawlingness of your MegaDrive synth, but it's a paragon of professional construction compared to the chewing-gum and masking-tape construction of LeCaine's machine. So, well done lad, well done.

      If you are completely new to making music with a tracker, I recommend spending some time with FamiTracker to get used to the workflow and quirks of making tracker music. It's simple and has good documentation that makes learning easier. Both pieces of software are free.

    Truly a thing of beauty. Would be very interested in seeing something similar with a Super Nintendo / Super Famicom, if it's possible and you're into it.

    • @henryrichard7619

      Old comment, but the problem with that is that the SNES’s sound was literally just a sampler - no fancy synthesis algorithms going on. Therefore you wouldn’t really be able to mess with it nearly as much; all you could really do is just load up different samples from a cartridge or something.
