On Memorial Weekend I went out to the Cumbres and Toltec for their opening day. This trip was by far the best I've ever taken and I cannot wait to go again.
Amazing, amazing video! As someone who models the D&RGW, Chama, NM yard area, and has not yet been there in person (this year, finally- I hope), your many detail shots are spot on. The trackside running video is first rate. One of the best narrow gauge videos- thank you so much for sharing!
This is a really good video and I would agree with the author's comment completely. We were out there on 9-2-14 and I was not out of sight of Chama on the way back to ABQ before I was thinking about the next trip. Then we were there on opening day this year (also a double header) and again, same thing. The wife is agreeable to every other year, and we are looking at fall color period of 2018. Cylinder cocks are held open for the first few yards of motion. The water trapped from condensation in the cylinders is not compressible, so if it is not relieved, the cylinder, piston, main rod, any or all may be catastrophically damaged. Somebody used a phone camera to grab the double header on 5/2/16 and if you check out the middle of the tourist car (between the gondola and parlor car) note a guy in a bright blue cap - that is me. Jeffrey McConnell Thanks! I use a little bit higher end version of the Sony Handycam for the last few years. It isn't the best camera in the world but I can make up for it with the editing. As for sharing more, I wish I could. Every day I was there I burned through all of my batteries and what I've posted is 99% of what I filmed. The 1% that wasn't shown was me wiping off my camera lens from all the snow and rain!
+Sos1969 It depends on what you're referring to. They open the cylinder cocks after the engine is sitting for a while to blow out water that has condensed in the cylinders. The safeties also lift when the pressure in the engine gets to be too great and needs to be relieved. The safeties on a K-36 are set at 195 psi
id1972taxi That would be one of the safety rules they have. Pretty much the same on modern day railroads too. You ring the bell whenever you're going to move the engine or train. And when the engine is coasting it can easily sneak up on you especially in the yard where a lot of things can be distracting you. Always safety first! Yes. It can be very annoying. But killing someone is a far poorer choice.
@@jeffreymcconnell6794 speaking of almost getting hit by the train I was walking in the yard and I didn't hear the train coming until he blew the whistle to warn me "get off the tracks trains coming" almost got hit
That just about makes you go mad eventually you will wear ear plugs and not hear anything or file for compensation due to excessive noise levels of the constantly ringing God dam bell
id1972taxi It's the railroad's policy to run the bell when an engine is moving. People are allowed free reign to walk throughout the yard and the bell allows them to know the engine is coming. Without the bell, people are likely to be hit and the yard would probably be forced to be fenced off.
I know this was a long time ago now but the Bell is music to my ears. Also to mention they are required to ring the bell always when moving around the yard or departing.
