That’s a good question. As long as you’re not backlashing a lot, and fishing around a lot of heavy cover, you could probably go 6 months without respooling. I fish so much that my line doesn’t have a chance to get old, due to re-rigging so often. I end up having to change it up every 3 - 4 weeks.
Your video reflects my exact sediment to the tee on the subject of fishing line. Thank you for telling people the truth. Fluorocarbon line may have its place but it is largely all hype and marketing.
Hey Chuck....nice job with this comparison. Definitely agree with your take on the transparency of the mono and Flouro....and the fact that flouro has almost as much stretch as mono. I think most folks think it has a lot less stretch. It doesn't. BTW, your kids did a great job producing this vid:)
Enjoyed the discussion on your preferences and recommendations, Chuck. Remember when braid came out and it was touted as the savior of fishing line. It reduces stretch and does a lot of things well; but on heavy rod fish can also get off more easily, especially jumpers like SMB. But it is a godsend on a baitcaster and a lot easier for duffers like me to untangle backlashes. Thanks for the visibility comparison and the vid!
Great information Chuck, especially for new fisherman who don't know who to talk to to get the straight story. Keep it going. Where I fish I use Flouro for jerkbaits in the Spring and Fall and braid for Frogs and some of my bigger top waters and not too much Mono.
I totally agree with you Chuck and it's good to see someone can be honest about the different type lines. I have been bass fishing since I was 8 years old where I am 54 now. I wish i had a dime for every bass I've caught in my 44 years of bass fishing. Unfortunately, I was forced to stop fishing for a bit because i had moved to Central America where there are no bass lakes. Now that I am back I am blown away to see how this great sport has changed. From Rods, reels, lures, and all different types of fishing lines which by the way, IMO Floro line is overpriced crap and for those fisherman who invested in expensive rods with micro guides, braid line is the perfect line to use if you enjoy having your guides ripped out and replacing your rods. Braid line is only good for hauling fish out of heavy vegetation. With that being said, I have always been a Green Trilene Big Game and P- Line Mono type man and i don't get easily influenced by the rest of the Hype and Propaganda.
Chuck, chuck, chuck, you are absolutely killing me with these videos. I just purchased a 1,200 yard spool of #30 braid. All my reels have braid on them and I put about a 15-20 yard leader on them normally fluorocarbon. Now, because I listen to everybody and their mother out there about what the next greatest thing is for line, I got hung up on the braid wagon. It went against my better judgement and after watching this I may just go back to mono. Like you I also prefer only the Trilene green. So, after spending over $130 for 1,200 yards of braid I will now purchase a large spool of 14 or 15 lb trilene. Keep your videos coming. By the way you have the best production crew ever. P.S. I watched episode 1 of the SM 42 Freeman.... Wow !!!!!!
Most (all but 1) of my casting setups are spooled with braid. I have 1 casting setup spooled with flouro. I generally use the flouro setup in open water or light cover. After watching countless videos from you, Scott Martin, and Roland Martin, I am wanting to get a rig or two spooled with mono. The couple things I like the most about braid is A) zero stretch and B) the strength vs. diameter. The one thing I really dislike about braid is it's highly visible under water. One trick I learned from Roland Martin was to use a black Sharpie to "blackout" 18-24" of the line from the lure up. This helps a little but I still wonder how many bass choose not to bite because they can see the line. Thanks for another video convincing me that I need a couple rods spooled with mono.
Cmbtvet outdoors Also remember... lures will act differently with different types of line. More rigid movements with braid. More fluid movements with mono.
Finally, somebody that gets it! Thank you Mr. Pippin for interjecting some real truth into the great fishing line conspiracy! Fluorocarbon line is one of the biggest money grabs of all time, in the multi billion dollar fishing tackle marketplace. If you like breaking off, use it. If you like paying more for those break offs, use it. Go through the fluoro phase using a top quality brand, and after your numerous breakoffs, you're likely to throw away of give away the rest. The only reason to ever use fluoro IMO would be in a deep cranking scenario for maximum depth. Where I fish, also in Fla, deep cranking is a rarity. Personally, I use a premium pink tinted mono made in Germany and have wrestled 6's, 7's, 8's, out of pads, hydrilla, coontail, and eelgrass, without a single breakoff. Mono stretch can at times be forgiving and just whats needed to keep a fighting fish pinned, spot on Chuck! Your analysis of braided lines and sizes also spot on! Thank you!!!!
Great information! I have a mono person, like floro can cast a country mile with it. Friend is sold on braid and talked me into it but I have had the worst luck with it, kinks up on my reel and snaps during a cast lost several lures. Always liked Trilene will definitely go 50/50 mono and floro.
Stacy King was a big fan off green mono ..You are both guides this is literally your job so I'm grateful that you made this video. I think floro has a small place in my arsenal but over all it's way over rated and certainly not budget friendly . I've lost more fish on floro then anything else especially fishing squarebills. .
Interesting and very informative chuck, so can wait to get back to florida. Very brave for calling out your wife regarding the "sitting room" glad I'm not you if or when she see this lol.
Wow this totally changes my thoughts on line. I've just always been told ( not directly) fluoro is the best and fish can't see it. Maybe just a marketing thing? I'm going to spool up that big game for this weekend and try it out. How do you feel about flipping and pitching mono around pads, grass lines, docks, trees, brush exct. With a 3/16th - 1/4. (that's what I do with fluoro)
I actually use mono a lot for the stuff you mentioned. Especially, when I’m only using a 3/16 - 1/4 ounce weight. With braid, soft plastics have a much more rigid movement. With mono, because it’s less pliable, lures will have a more fluid action.
Great video Chuck Quick question . I have one heavy/fast rod that I will be using for frogs and flipping . Would you just split the difference and use 50lb braid for everything ?
What do you recommend for catfishing on a baitcaster? I honestly hate monofilament.. but, I've been considering maybe getting a better quality than the old 10lb idk what I grew up with for blue gills
Chuck, How often do you recommend changing Trilene Big Game?

Probably the best fishing line tutorial I've seen online. Thanks for the video!
Thanks Jason! 👊🏻

Lol. Got the kids in the video to spice it up a little bit. Yep, Fluoro has become my least favorite/used of the 3 types.

Dale Carpenter no problem Dale. Glad you like the video!

Thanks Les. I agree with you on that. I do like Fluoro on jerk baits

Racerxv6 Valvoline cool! Yeah... I like braid, but only when I need it. That SMC trip was a trip to remember for sure.

Swampocalypse Thanks! I appreciate it. I thought more people would disagree with me, but apparently fishermen are getting smart.

Thanks! All 3 types of line have their place, but braid can definitely be tricky.
Really digging that “top secret” lure testing facility lol
Roll_Tide roll lol. For some reason, my kids just call it “the pool”.

Equality & Liberty is on the right man, it’s an honor to be used in the same conversation with Stacy King. I appreciate it. I love the green mono!

Thanks! I feel pretty safe. Don’t think she’ll actually watch the video. Lol

100% agree. Great minds think alike 😂.
Thanks Tom! I appreciate it. 👊🏻
Thanks for the video.
Is there a shelf life for fishing line?
Good question…. I’m sure there is. Especially, for mono and Fluoro. However, I don’t know what it is.
Great video Chuck
Quick question . I have one heavy/fast rod that I will be using for frogs and flipping .
Would you just split the difference and use 50lb braid for everything ?
Great video. In the visibility test were you using the green mono?
Yep. 15 lb green Trilene Big Game
