To Conquer Temptation, Avoid the Temptress | Proverbs 5:8

The key to victory over pornography isn't fight, but flight. Your sexual purity depends not on your moral backbone nor on your strength of character nor on your level of willpower. It depends on your ability to avoid temptation in the first place. To conquer the sin of looking at pornography, you must learn to bypass-not battle-sexual temptation.
This biblical tactic comes from none other than Solomon himself. In Proverbs 5, he warns you about the strange woman, which is to say, the sexually immoral, adulterous, forbidden woman. Her lips drip honey and her mouth is smoother than oil. In other words, the sexually immoral woman is seductive and enticing. She offers you sexual pleasures that appeal to your flesh, are enjoyable in the moment, but are sinful and forbidden. She leads you to your death and destruction.
Solomon says the way to overcome the temptation is to avoid the temptress. He doesn't advise you to be strong in the moment, or to battle temptation, or to expect to resist the immoral woman when you meet her. Instead, Solomon prescribes radical avoidance. "Remove your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house," he commands. When you walk through town, take the route to your destination that avoids her. But notice the modifier. You are not to simply remove your way from her. You are to remove your way far from her. You don't avoid the sexually tempting woman by simply crossing the street. You avoid her by taking a detour of 10 city blocks.
All of this presupposes one vital truth, doesn't it? You already know where to find the sexually immoral woman. Bumping into her is no accident. You know where she lives. You know where she offers her sexual services. You know where she tempts you. You can keep yourself far away from her precisely because you know the parts of town where you are guaranteed to run into her.
Solomon's advice applies to you online, naturally. If you want to resist sexual temptation, avoid the online temptress. You know where she lives. You know the TV shows, the websites, the social media platforms, the movies, the chat rooms, the eBooks, the hookup apps, and the other places where the sexually immoral woman lives online. You know where to find the seductress with just a few clicks. That's why you have the power to resist her-because you have the knowledge to avoid her.
