I wrote all this for people like juhlemann, who are confused (and who can blame them?) about the endless fights and insults on the topic of Gypsy versus Romanian people and music. But honestly, as long as people are goodhearted and they share a passion for music and joy, everything else are details. I discovederd Toni Iordache a few days ago and I am still in shock :)). Just pure poetry. And I am just very grateful that I live in the same country he did.

I want you to know that the Iordache family are great Roumanians, who do a lot for their country and the people by playing the music of Roumania.What have you done for your country and your people????

The confusion comes from the fact that Gypsy musicians in Romania can play BOTH Gypsy and Romanian music. Gypsies and Romanians are two ethnic groups with different origins, history, language, lifestyle AND music that live in the same country since the Gypsies came to Romania (around the 17th century, I think). Most of the songs that Romanian-Gypsy musicians play are Romanian folklore songs, I guess because most of their audience is Romanian.
I guess Gypsy musicians don't play Gypsy music more often because most Romanians can't understand the Gypsy language, while all Gypsies can speak Romanian. Actually, I am a Romanian and I would like to hear more authentic Gypsy folklore, but except for Tony Gatliff's movies and Tamango from Radio Guerrilla I don't know other sources for traditional Gypsy music in Romania. This, for example is Romanian folklore, and the fast bit at the end is a very old Romanian dance called "sarba"
This is truly remarkable playing, but I would like some clarification. I am well aware of the different ethnic groups living in Romania (I have been there 4 times), but how is this not Romanian? Is American Jazz not American because it was invented by Black people? I must say I agree with ghipsoiu on this.
