  • In this clip you can see the long form of my non rotational dragon boat stroke and how it's taken shape from my earlier rotational vids. It's based on a 'hinging' and 'sit up' action combined with a strong top arm drive
While the outside shoulder does move forward slightly on the set up, this does not constitute a rotational movement as the inside shoulder does not drop back and the torso does not rotate
For anyone interested in this technique, I'd recommend starting with the long form first so you can feel the full effect of the technique. Just relax, take the power out, and let the technique do the work
Remember, what I'm doing in the pool is really just a drill to showcase the technique, the moving parts involved, and how the power is generated through the hinging and sit up action
What's not included in the pool sesh is what the legs and feet are doing in the actual boat. Once the legs come into play and are applied at a certain point in the stroke, you will multiply the pressure on your paddle considerably
In a boat, I can maintain the long form of the stroke into the mid to high 50s but once the rate starts climbing into the 60s and higher, I start clipping the back of the stroke. Never clip the front, always maintain the catch 'sweet spot' at the front
At higher rates the hinging and sit up actions become less prominent. They are still there but the movements are less exaggerated turning almost to 'pulses' instead
Remember, this is a non rotational stroke that maintains square shoulders through both the loading and execution phases. If you are doing this technique in a boat full of rotational paddlers you are going to stand out
That may be a good thing or not depending on how disruptive it is (or isn't) to the wider team. It will also depend on the view of your coach and whether they see (or not) any merit/value in what you're doing
In short, you may have to adapt the stroke to more of a rotational style if that's the preference of the team. This is relatively easy to do
