Buffy's dracula episode is such a treat! season 5 episode 1!
My love for Dracula knows no bounds., I saw the play version of this when I was 11, and then I went down a serious vampire rabbit hole shortly thereafter. I ended up seeing the Coppola version in theaters roughly a year later (my first R rated movie), and my mother ended up getting for me the first two books in Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, which were the springboard that launched my independent reading life
In the movie Love at First Bite: Renfield is played by Arte Johnson and takes place in the 1970s. Renfield is watching TV and is truly upset by the RAID commercial.
And George Hamilton plays the most tan vampire ever.
Dracula's ship runs aground in the harbour at Whitby in Yorkshire. A large black hound leaps from the ship and bounds up the cliffs - could be a basset! 😀
I first read Dracula as a College freshman, while taking the train from NY to Chicago, a 12 hour ride that took 26 hours (due to cows on the tracks and a snowstorm). Read it non-stop and absolutely loved it. I think it’s much more fun than Frankenstein (which I read for class as a Freshman), and I’ve re-read it a few times.

Dracula was one of the first “classic” novels I ever read on by my owl volition, and has remained my favorite book ever since. I just finished Frankenstein for the first time a few weeks ago, and it definitely didn’t hold a candle to Dracula for me. Strangely, I recall being bored to tears for the first half of it, but the latter half cemented its greatness in my mind forevermore. I think I simply must reread it soon (I’ve never reread anything, despite all the reading I do).
While visiting Highgate cemetery, probably 30 years ago, a tour guide highlighted a particularly mausoleum that was partially underground, but had windows that allowed light to filter down into the space. Supposedly, Stoker was walking by while family was visiting down below and their movement caught his attention. They said it was part of the spark of the idea for Dracula.

Another good continuation of the Dracula tale is Elizabeth Kostova's 'The Historian'. Well worth the read!

I have two or three different editions and have yet to read Dracula. I will rectify that soon and Anno Dracula sounds incredible!
I first read Dracula 30 years a go while on vacation in Hawaii. Couldn’t put it down. It was the highlight of my vacation. Great read.
I found Frankenstein incendiary when I read it but really struggled with Dracula. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard you sing it’s praises and I clearly need to revisit it. I am an Anne Rice fan! I should adore this! 😂 I’m looking forward to trying it again.

I ordered Anno Dracula but Something In The Blood was out of stock. I didn't know about the biography of Bram Stoker. I love a good vampire story. I'm reading Interview With the Vampire right now. In my much younger days I would hurry home from school to watch Dark Shadows.
I agree regarding the comparison between Frankenstein and Dracula. Frankenstein is amazing especially since it was written by such a young woman but I think ,as far as story goes, Dracula is more thrilling and accessible. It is probably one of the favorite novels. I will have to add Anno Dracula and Wolf’s Annotated Dracula to my TBR. Thanks, Steve.
Did you see the latest BBC adaptation (the one written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatis)? The first two episodes are fantastic! the last episode lost me a little, but overall worth a watch

Hi Steve. I'm a new subscriber to your channel and am enjoying it enormously. Dracula is my favourite novel, and I was delighted to see this video. I was going to mention the cover of The Essential Dracula actually being Klaus Kinski, but I see someone has beaten me to it. Anyway, I just wanted to recommend a few other editions of this great novel that you might be interested in. They're both annotated editions. The first one is by Clive Leatherdale entitled Dracula Unearthed. Like Wolf's book, it's heavily annotated and extremely entertaining. The other is The New Annotated Dracula by Leslie S. Klinger. It's also great, but the annotations are written from the angle that the events of the novel actually happened. A beautiful book. Incidentally, Wolf's hardcover The Annotated Dracula, which I guess is the first edition of Essential, is absolutely beautifully illustrated by Wilfried Satty that really recalls the art of the great Gustave Dore. It's well worth looking into. All the best!

One of Kim Newman's other novels is "The Hound of the D'Urbervilles" featuring Professor Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes. Back on the Dracula theme, his short story "Andy Warhol's Dracula" is well worth a read.
I love both Dracula and Frankenstein, which one I prefer is a toss up. It's hard to directly compare them because they are such different reading experiences. I'd like to see a movie adaptation of Dracula that was actually faithful to the book. (Same with Frankenstein, actually, but I think that would warrant a miniseries)

Always behind on commenting *sigh* I don't watch a lot of these, but I certainly couldn't ignore Dracula! I clicked mostly to see if you'd mention Stoker's other works. I've only read The Jewel of Seven Stars and wasn't particularly moved. While none apparently live up to this, is there any in your opinion that were a little more successful than the others?)
What I didn't expect was a lightbulb, I have read this several times, and I never picked up on the pacing being like each as an act. You're completely right. I can't wait to have this in mind come my October re-read! I also really want all of these related books/editions now. So I may be glaring at you a little.
Another Dracula lover on booktube loved the Anno Dracula series, but then ended up raving once they hit a certain point. BUt now that I have a counter opinion I'm back to being on the fence. I am fascinated, but cautious about all pastiche novels for this book as I've long toyed with doing my own, though not focused on what many I've seen, and don't want an outside influence. I may have to bite the bullet if the series is that good.

This is a book I love but it is also one of the most ridiculous, bizarre books. Not because of the vampires, but the way it is presented and what the characters are expected to believe in the story. How could you possibly reconcile with anything Van Helsing says? I live for it, though.
I know! There's one quick point during the long exposition section where one of the young men glancingly suggests that maybe Van Helsing himself is the one perpetrating all the dark, weird stuff they've been encountering, and I've always thought that possibility wasn't given enough space!

I feel like I am taking my life in my hands correcting you and your encyclopedic brain Steve, but I believe that you are mistaken about the cover of copy of The Essential Dracula that you showed.
If I am correct, the photograph is not Max Shrek from F. W. Murnau 's 1922 version of Nosferatu, it is actually Klaus Kinski in the 1979 Werner Herzog remake.
Anyway, awesome video (as usual). I love when you are able to include the non-Penguin tangential material.

Read this and Frankenstein during the month of October last year. I gotta say I liked Frankenstein better. I thought Frankenstein was genuinely surprising and nothing at all what I expected, whereas I felt the opposite with Dracula. I liked it, didn’t love it. I kinda felt most of the male characters were similar and acted like macho men and had to protect Mina at all times. The section of Harker in the castle was my favorite and I thought it was kinda downhill from there. Like I said, didn’t hate it, but preferred Frankenstein
Never read it... Is it smutty? If so it's not my cup of tea.
In this video, I give the book a full-throated, enthusiastic all-purpose recommendation. If you can watch the video, know that's what I'm doing, and then ask "is it smutty?", then I honestly don't know what to tell you.
I found it a bit too messy when I read it and I've never been tempted to reread. You're close to persuading me but not quite successful. You know you could recover your Penguin by sticking your preferred cover (perhaps the one that's falling apart?) over the ugly picture.
If this unabashed love letter didn't convince you to re-read the book, I don't know what would!
