This show was on the edge of memory for me. I never even knew exactly what it was called until now. Fantastic how it features early use of computer graphics.
Great video - I absolutely loved Beat The Teacher and this is from when I had just started secondary school :) I also like the fact the quality of the picture matches what we used to get at home - we had terrible shadowing!
I went on this show in 86 and I said to paul Jones I felt sorry for the character u played in sweeney which I happen to see few weeks earlier..and he really laughed.
I used to love "Beat The Teacher" on Children's BBC 1 (during the always brilliant broom cupboard days) back in the 1980s when i was a kid. I remember watching all of "Beat The Teacher" (I never missed an episode); right from Howard Stableford presting and then Paul Jones (here) and finally of course Bruno Brookes. It just brilliant and by far the best ever quiz show for kids the BBC has ever made in my opinion. Paul Jones was born in 1942 and was in his forties when he present "Beat The Teacher" today he is 79 year olds old!!. For those that don't know he was one of the original members of the legendary 1960s pop group "Manfred Mann" he was the lead singer of the group and a brilliant harmonica player he had several Top Ten hit records with the group from 1962 to 1966 including "5-4-3-2-1" and "Pretty Flamingo".
I remember this show only vaguely, but Paul Jones later played Uncle Jack in a series of daft CBBC children’s adventures on the same level as Rent A Ghost. This was 1990-93 and my mother, an old fan of his music, pointed him out.
Omg this was my favourite show as a kid! Can't believe it's on here. Some of those questions were pretty difficult! The theme tune must have changed in the next series as I remember a voice that said 'beat the, beat the, beat the teacher!'
Been looking for a full episode of this for years! Middle middle 2.... *bzzzz* *click*... *bzzzz* *click*. Ahh, the days when even the simplest kids' gameshow had some engineering behind it. Nowadays, the game board would just be computerised on an LED screen. Wonder if it ever jammed up during the recording?
That's the music and intro I remember, not the crappy later version. When Howard Stapleford hosted it, I seem to recall he would discuss other subjects. One that I'll never forget is when he showed one of those boiled sweets with a scorpion inside.
Yeah you can both end up with a king each and a stalemate , that question was bogus .....but hey it was 35 years ago , too late for a replay I guess :)
That question at 4.51 about chess is wrong. You can finish a game of chess with just two pieces on the board. The two kings and it would be a stalemate.
I thought "This can't possibly be a complete show at under 15 minutes - I'm sure it was at least 45 minutes long!" Doesn't time pass more slowly when you're young?
Can anybody fine me the saturday show from cantril high school we sent on for a competition on talented teacher my teacher ws a one man band we got beat by orvil impressionist id luv to see it if any one has seen it id appreciate if u cld send me it please thankyou
Michaela is my mummy who has been looking for this for ages, well done!! 💖
Brilliant, I hope it's brought back lots of happy memories!
Neil Miles it has, thank you
Eleanor Caley she was really good.
How cute! Lovely comment to read!
Paul Jones was definitely the best presenter of this show in my opinion
Used to love this. Nice to see it again. I miss eighties kids’ TV.

Same. Thank goodness for youtube eh ?😂

Used to watch this every day on CBBC. Great show!!
I was stupidly obsessed with this show
UKArchiveTV Me too 🙈
And me. Used to hate it when the pupil was far ahead and the teacher played the joker.
Me too!
I went on this show in 86 and I said to paul Jones I felt sorry for the character u played in sweeney which I happen to see few weeks earlier..and he really laughed.
Still one of the coolest kids quiz shoes on tv.
Great show! Loved the mechanical noughts and crosses board, and brilliant tactics from the girl!

Thanks for uploading, I used to love this, some of the questions are really hard

It did - they revamped the show a bit when Bruno Brookes took over as the presenter.
mercuryvapoury Totally forgot that Bruno Brooke's did this too 👍🏼
Originally presented by Howard Stableford in 1985.
@@robalexander8065 Quite so - though I believe his real name was Harold Stooblefart.
Been looking for a full episode of this for years!

Didn't even realise Paul Jones was a legend at the time watching this programme. Obviously I do now.
I remember this well!!
That's the music and intro I remember, not the crappy later version.
When Howard Stapleford hosted it, I seem to recall he would discuss other subjects. One that I'll never forget is when he showed one of those boiled sweets with a scorpion inside.
Recall Howard and the "Beat your brains out" hat.
Those late eighties computer graphics are quite charming. These days it's hard to believe it took four people to make them.
4:50 Wrong answer, should be just 2 kings, as he didn't specify it was a decisive game.
@thecouchtripper not of your opponent is also only left with the king.
Yeah you can both end up with a king each and a stalemate , that question was bogus .....but hey it was 35 years ago , too late for a replay I guess :)
@thecouchtripper Nope. You cannot win if you only have a king left, but you do not automatically lose. A draw is still possible.
A Great theme tune by the legend that is Mike Batt.

Could some3one please explain no Ham question as at 8.50 it shows that Northampton clearly has as Ham in it!
How fit was Paul Jones back then!?
Still not bad!
The games really well thought out
Manfred Mann's Paul Jones
Thought it was!
I only remember Howard Stableford and Bruno Brookes
Good series this

Children's programmes became adept at squeezing as much as possible in the minimum time.
Questo gioco in Italia fece Mike Bongiorno con il suo Tris nel 91
Was that a former bandmate of Richard Hannon Sr
The theme music would be perfect for listening to on a Sony Walkman whilst shaking a butterfly to death in a matchbox.
Sounds like the Paul Jones on BBC Radio 2 who does the blues show on a Monday
It is indeed.
How good was Miss Edwards, the highest scoring teacher?
5:34
I remember a teacher who was really good called Mr Champion. But then he got beat by a blond kid from Macclesfield
Yeah I remember him too, but there was a teacher called Mr Wallin I believe who was even better. I'm pretty sure he won the final.
@@fraz6354 yes. That was the year before
@otisbdriftwood6520 That blond kid was called Jonathan Cameron.
Can anybody fine me the saturday show from cantril high school we sent on for a competition on talented teacher my teacher ws a one man band we got beat by orvil impressionist id luv to see it if any one has seen it id appreciate if u cld send me it please thankyou
Who introduced the show there, was that Scofield?😂😂
Yep.
Its better than the rubbish on for today's kids!
so believe it or not im there reds 3rd row back far left..lol 13 i was .😁
ah phillip we all knew you were in the closet!!
God, this was crap.
