Thats an excellent choice - Douglas Fir is a superb timber which is very stable and has very good tensile strength. It probably didnt need the maple reinforcement but it can't hurt - Great job!!!!!

    Pine neck? Wow😮

It’s Douglas Fir which is similar to pine but usually a bit stronger. I’ll only use quartersawn, straight grained pieces and I reinforce it with a hidden piece of quartersawn maple surrounding the truss rod.

Nice job - Is that neck Douglas Fir?????

Yes, it’s reclaimed Douglas Fir that’s quartersawn and reinforced with a quartersawn maple insert surrounding the truss rod.

I was surprised to see a gouge, especially that large, but I see what you're doing. More heft with less chance of collateral damage? And what is the second tool you are using?

I like using an “in-cannel” gouge which has the bevel on the inside. It has to be super sharp otherwise it will catch and splinter the wood. That also allows me to use very little force which reduces the chance of slipping. The second tool is a half-round razor file.

Masterful gouge hand control. Much respect, Sir.
