Pure and simple, gloves don't do a great job of keeping your hands warm, particularly if the rest of your body is cold. Between winter cycling, cross country skiing, and ice climbing I've spent a small fortune n gloves over the years and the most expensive gloves still don't keep my hands warm despite ads and reviews that assure me they will.
Castelli Estremo gloves are fantastic. I commute in freezing temps, and these stay warm over my speedy 18 mile bike commute. I tested about 16 gloves until I settled on these.
I have a massive collection of gloves. The sportfull gloves have been working for me in all temperatures in cardiff and the South Wales valleys for a fair few years now. On my second pair after a few crashes and falls. They are amazingly comfortable and dexterous and work in temperatures from 10 - below 0 for me. Best value and most useful gloves I have.
After painful finger rides in the cold, I invested last winter in the Estremo and they have been great for me too. Even thought they have more bulk than some, I've not had a problem using them with the relatively small Di2 gear controls. Plus the warmth and fit is great for me.
A bulky as they seem, they don’t feel as bulky as equally warm gloves that I’ve tried by Gore,, etc. They also have an unmatched flexibility , bend in the right place and don’t compromise hand dexterity on the bike.
The Head gloves from Costco are cheap and available in three different weights. For the same price as one if these options, you can buy a bunch of pairs and throw them in the wash after each ride.
I highly recommend Castelli’s Perfetto model line of gloves. Both the Perfetto ROS and Perfetto Light are fantastic depending on the temp range. Really high quality, fit and finish.
For the really cold rides in Colorado I use those battery warmed gloves from Costco. So far they seem to work extremely well since the heat levels are adjustable.
Been using Pearl Izumi AmFIB toe covers for the last four winters - awesome. They block the ventilation holes on the top/front of the shoe and generally insulate the entire front of the shoe. With these on I can use pretty much any socks at all, although I tend to wear Castelli Quindici merino socks all year round. Winter night rides can get close to 0 deg C - with toe covers, no prob. When temps stay above 20C take the toe covers off. (Australia here - I can't stand the cold i.e. anything below 20!) Still looking for the perfect winter gloves though. This video is a big help
Uniqlo heat tech for me - warm, not too bulky, wicks sweat. More comfy at a fraction of the cost of merino. Tights/overshoes will hide that you aren’t wearing official cycling specific socks, if that bothers you.
Try Dissent 133 multi-layer gloves. I found the Estremo cold - guess I get colder than you but the three layers of dissent 133 gloves worked. And you can take off a pair as you travel. And for colder days, battery warmed gloves are great.
Looking for the video with the best winter shoes. Can't get my feet warm matter what I do. I'm about to go back to flat pedals so that I can wear heavy winter boots.
Excellent - thanks. I have tried the Assos double glove system and a lobster glove. In 5°c and below my hands get so cold I either use heated gloves with heated fingers or just ride inside on Zwift.
The temperature doesn’t alone have a huge impact , its rain has the real impact, the. Castelli extremo is good but 3 degrees and wet you are done, it soaks the water and your hand will freeze
I Have raynauds so, painfully cold after about 1 hour riding in cold weather and puts you off riding. But I love riding too much so always open to try anything that can keep my hands warm when riding. I’ve bought at least 20 pairs of gloves and just bought the £80 Italian ones recommended in this video, I’ll try those gore mitts if these don’t work! Any more recommendations anyone?
Most gloves work OK, but a big annoyance is the gap between the glove and the sleeve. My wrists get cold. I bought the cheapest pair of socks I could find and cut off the ankle part and made myself some wrist gaiters. Works pretty well.
I drive a bike all year around and here in Finland during the winter temperature can go under -30°, so I need way warmer cloves for the mid part of the winter.
Are the Giro Xnetic a reiteration of the Sealskinz waterproof knitted gloves? Even if I love their socks, the gloves are a total failure - you sweat in them, they don't keep your palm and fingers warm in the cold weather ... and they get soaking wet and freezing cold when raining!
Hi David, not sure if you have experience with them but how would you compare the Giro Ambient gloves to these? Would they be more comparable to the Sportful Fiandre or Castelli Estremo? I have 45NRTH Sturmfist 5s for extreme conditions and the Specialized Trail Thermal but would like something in between. Spend a long time here in Canada in that -5 to -15 range but also spend a long time in that 0 to +7 range (would like a good glove for that range).
Been helpful if you had said whether the last 3 pairs had any waterproofing. Challenge for me is wet and cold. Often below 5 and raining on Yorkshire coast so warm and waterproof - usually find my gloves last a winter then stay warm but let the rain in. Suggestions?
I recently brought waterproof fleece lined gloves from a British owned company and they leaked through the seams on the fingers and palms 😢 On another note I found Altura & Endura kit is the best it generally works for me
They haven't made the glove that will help me I'm afraid. I suffer with Reynaud's Syndrome as well. Have amassed about 15 pairs of gloves. Pretty much the same selection of styles you feature but nothing helps. I have a pair of the battery powered heated gloves but they were next to useless. Far too bulky as well. After a 2 or 3 hour ride in cold weather my hands are just useless appendages on the end of my arms. Totally numb.
Cycling gloves for winter are overpriced. I use Black diamond soft shell; plenty hard wearing as used for mountaineering, available in different thicknesses and soooo much cheaper!

If there was an electric heating glove, would you choose it?
Galibier has a great range of gloves, which work really well, and are fantastic value
Plus one for the galibier gloves
Castelli neoprene gloves for me. Possibly not for everyone as your hands can get a bit sweaty but they are never cold.
After painful finger rides in the cold, I invested last winter in the Estremo and they have been great for me too. Even thought they have more bulk than some, I've not had a problem using them with the relatively small Di2 gear controls. Plus the warmth and fit is great for me.

I've got a pair of the Giro Xnetic H2O gloves and they're working very well in our soggy Vancouver winter climate!
The Head gloves from Costco are cheap and available in three different weights. For the same price as one if these options, you can buy a bunch of pairs and throw them in the wash after each ride.
Gloves from petrol pump as liners are the hack when out and freezing.it works.
Some good gloves out there! I don’t have any right now, thanks for the review
I highly recommend Castelli’s Perfetto model line of gloves. Both the Perfetto ROS and Perfetto Light are fantastic depending on the temp range. Really high quality, fit and finish.
I am not a cyclist but I like the look of those liner gloves for an early morning run when you just need to take the edge off the cold.
Looking at new winter gloves for some time now. Just ordered the Fiandre model based on your vid, hope they are good :). Nice vid again, keep it up.
Good choice!
For the really cold rides in Colorado I use those battery warmed gloves from Costco. So far they seem to work extremely well since the heat levels are adjustable.
Great information David! Could you also recommend socks and insider tips for us with cold feet?
+1 for socks!
I find the right winter boots or shoes and foot beds more important than socks for keeping feet warm.
I'm big in to merino wool at the moment, bare layer, socks. Yes. 👍

I have a fast ebike and my hands get cold below 45° enough with neoprene covers its nice to have a good wind proof warm glove below 30° for sure.
Try Dissent 133 multi-layer gloves. I found the Estremo cold - guess I get colder than you but the three layers of dissent 133 gloves worked. And you can take off a pair as you travel. And for colder days, battery warmed gloves are great.
i love my Defeet duragloves for most of the year. Otherwise i would also highly rate Spatz gloves too. Got to be as thin as possible for me.
Looking for the video with the best winter shoes. Can't get my feet warm matter what I do. I'm about to go back to flat pedals so that I can wear heavy winter boots.
I got thin pair to go up and another to go down. Sweat and moisture will chill you either way
Castelli Spettacolo: superb. You cannot go wrong when you buy anything from Castelli.
You can actually go very wrong with Castelli! I'm a real Fanboy, but Castelli gloves are generally overpriced Chinese junk!
Excellent - thanks. I have tried the Assos double glove system and a lobster glove. In 5°c and below my hands get so cold I either use heated gloves with heated fingers or just ride inside on Zwift.
That's not you, those Assos gloves are total crap. I own them as well.
The temperature doesn’t alone have a huge impact , its rain has the real impact, the. Castelli extremo is good but 3 degrees and wet you are done, it soaks the water and your hand will freeze
Nice video! what watch are you wearing?
Me, living in a place that's constantly between 5 and 25 degrees C, and never above or below that all year round:
Gloves are gloves!
I hate bulky gloves. When it gets too cold for my midweight gloves, I add Hot Hands.
45nrth Cobrafist pogies, and any thin glove you want
I have Raynaud's. Other options are chemical hand warmers, heated gloves using batteries and pogies also known as Bar Mitts.
I Have raynauds so, painfully cold after about 1 hour riding in cold weather and puts you off riding. @@NetMillionaire Try electric gloves which give about two hours of heat.
Great review(s)… "Buy cheap, buy twice” - the truest, truism in the history of truth… 😎🤜🏽🤛🏽
Buy once cry once is another 👍

Can partly relate, here in Estonia I ride on the -20 degree days
Last year I wrapped pipe insulation around the bars. Didn't work. I like the look of those Gore gloves tho
I prefer a fine wool glove within a good pair of track mitts.
Are the Gore Wear GTX Infinium Thermo Split Gloves good enough for -5 to -20 degrees?
Are the Giro Xnetic a reiteration of the Sealskinz waterproof knitted gloves? Even if I love their socks, the gloves are a total failure - you sweat in them, they don't keep your palm and fingers warm in the cold weather ... and they get soaking wet and freezing cold when raining!
Decathlon 500, what do ya think?
Hi David, not sure if you have experience with them but how would you compare the Giro Ambient gloves to these? Would they be more comparable to the Sportful Fiandre or Castelli Estremo? I get the battery powered seal skin waterproof warming gloves
The indoor trainer is fine unless you ride your bike to work. Woud be nice though to commute without leaving the house in the cold winter months.
”Winter” 😁
I am super happy with my $17 Rockbros winter gloves from Ebay.
People over think gloves. Buy road or off-road light weight pogies problem solved.
r I get mine from Aldi cost about a fiver fantastic.
Rock Brothers mitts .. no need 4 gloves ..
Assos? Any ideas on the Assos line of gloves?
Horribly bad.
Ziener GTX Gore tex for deep winter rides and Ziener Team Nordic Gore tex Infinium for Autumn wind ok until about 2 C.
Been helpful if you had said whether the last 3 pairs had any waterproofing. Challenge for me is wet and cold. Often below 5 and raining on Yorkshire coast so warm and waterproof - usually find my gloves last a winter then stay warm but let the rain in. Suggestions?
Glovelies anti slip silicone will do the trick.
to bad you didnt look at pearl izumi. they make some of the best winter gloves on the market.
Yup, I wore PI Lobster Mitts back when I lived in the snow belt... Loved those things.
@@d00dEEE the new versions are even better with primaloft gold and the hydrophobic fabrics
Wou,Would, be helpful to add in if they havea any good options for women. Thanks!
Unpopular opinion: Ski gloves are the best. Thin fashionable gloves are for people who wear cycling helmets on the canal path
I recently brought waterproof fleece lined gloves from a British owned company and they leaked through the seams on the fingers and palms 😢

It gets way colder than 5° 🤣🤣🤣
