That's why in the scene where the little Anjali is done reading the letter, you hear Tina's voice saying: "I was his friend, but I could never be his best friend". Also, Rahul never realised how much he loves Anjali until she went away. Bassicly what I'm trying to say is, he loved Anjali for her personality and loved Tina for her looks, so when he met Anjali 8 years later he realised he WAS and IS in love with her. ❤️

Tina stepping in made Anjali realise she loves Rahul, and her stepping out, made Rahul realise it was Anjali all along.
