How is the Autofocus on the Panasonic Lumix GH6

- We all know that the autofocus on the Panasonic GH5 wasnt to great. However now Panasonic gives us the panasonic GH6 and we are all looking for improvments. Here are some test i did and they are uneditied.
I used two lenses all of the time. It was the Panasonic Leica 10-25 f1.7 and the Panasonic Leica 25-50 f1.7.

I've watched 2 dozen reviews on the GH6 autofocus since yesterday. Why do all of you people just test it by mugging into the camera and moving back and forth a few steps. Of course it focuses!!! Can't you try to lock on some people walking by at a distance, then switch from one to another to see what the frigging camera does in a real life situation outdoors. Can you say "sports" or "animals". For Heaven's sake.
Spot on and no sheet! I have yet to see one review or video where it nails AF! I don't want sometimes for $2200 I want everytime!
you make som great points! Im working on an extencive AF-video where I will test this out =) I think why "TH-camrs" test the AF on them selfs is because its how they(we) tend to use the cameras, thanx for a great comment !

I am a micro four thirds shooter and like Panasonic but unfortunately this just not a photoscentric camera. I don’t have high hopes for this autofocus holding up for sports or wildlife. We will just see bloggers moving back and forth and putting their hands in front of their face and it focusing. Something any brand new camera should be able to do.
Thanks for the detail review! I've just ordered a GH6 online for being an extra versatile cam B to my FX3 setup, but I started to worry about that the AF performance could be too bad, but after watching your actual test, it seems totally fine to my eyes.

I still have the same problem with the autofocus of the GH5M2 or GH6: the focus is perfect when going from the foreground to the background but inverts the camera continues to seek focus towards a 3rd plane? instead of coming back to the foreground instantly... it takes a moment to come back to the foreground. is there a solution ?
Great video! I will be be doing a lot of green screen work what did you recommend as far as settings shooting green screen footage in 4K? And also what tripod are you using? Looks smooth!
I would probably go with prores in 5,8k, to get good green screen try to have as good quality as possible:) best wishes
Did you record in 24 or 25p or in 50p? These seems to be a difference in AF using these framerates as the sensor collects more info at 50p….
I recorded at 25p, I will be trying out all the differrent framrates to see whats best =)
I have been impressed by the auto focus performance that you have demonstrated here. I was considering buying the new G9 ii, but there is a really good deal available now on the GH6. I think I will spring for the GH6.
Interested to know if it can hold focus while walking and vlogging. If so it will be my new travel vlog cam for sure

The camera (based on other reviews I’ve watched) is not great when there is a decent amount of motion around. I use a G9 and this is my biggest issue with Panasonic. Otherwise I love the G9

If I want to set the ISO manually, which ISO should I choose to shoot in 4K 50p 10bit (outside)?
If I use the V-Log how many ISO do I have to choose (outside)?

thanks a lot for all that footage and autofocus test. also for the 200fps, that seems suffer form pixel binning-blurring and some aliasing. but the 200fps is better than gh5s, having 10 bit and vlog. also seems to me that dynamic boost dr needs some noise reduction. anyway a great little cinema camera.
My pleasure, yes the 200fps has som artifacts, for me the most important is 120fps in 4k and that Is crazy beautiful =)
Hi is it possible to shoot 4:3 ratio and add 16:9 frame markers horizontal and vertical.
I watched a video were a 16:9 marker was laid vertically across the 4:3.
Reason I ask is I get asked shoot a combination of horizontal and vertical video for socy media.
You can actually do that! =) I just tried it out =)
The focusing is pretty good, what are people expecting even if you were follow focusing on some of these situations manually you would be having a hard time bagging it on every shot. I'm sure Panasonic must have spent considerable time working on it. When you get to this level it's all about diminishing returns.
Honestly I'm very happy with it, it works great for me, allthough Im not shooting with lights in the background, but it works just great most of the time.

the G9 probably hade the best Af until the s5 and s1h came, the gh6 is better still =) I was shooting at 25fps and a 180* shutter angle

From the examples Ive seen and my work flow needs the AF will be useful. How does the AF limiter feature work.
Honestly. I havent had to use it because because its worked great for me, but im goiing to try it out =)
Do you think for simple talking head TH-cam stuff the GH6 AF would be good enough?

If you are used to auto focus on Sony Alpha series camera, you will struggle to find Panosonic's auto focus acceptable. There is no way around this fact (unless you constantly shoot in high contrast scenes were Panasonic auto focus performs okay). Anyone saying otherwise is kidding themselves. There are so many videos showing how poorly it performs. Even videos that claim to show how acceptable it performs often end up doing the opposite. The GH6 is a great camera for video apart from this point but sadly it's a huge point. Hopefully the next GH series camera improves on this as I would much prefer to invest in Panasonic than Sony due to the ridiculous prices Sony charge for lenses (and camera bodies) as well as how inferior their stabilization is (which would actually be my main reason to go with Panasonic). All I want is the perfect camera:)
Nice test my friend ,autofocus in gh6 works equally or better than my a7iii kitlens ,the only downside i find in this camera is that is micro4/3 and i am between now this and s5,and i would like to know if the autofocus works same nice, as the 50mm lens
I would say that the GH6 Af is much better than the S5 AF, I use it to shoot my self and it works great most of the time =)

Id didn't shoot any 300 fps, but give me day and Ill upload some =)
On what framerates did you test it? Have you tested FullHD 200p AF?
I testet it in 100 and 25 fps, and by accident in 50fps and it all looked very good!

Your autofocus test is really good. Thanks for sharing this. It clearly demonstrate how bad the GH system is. Slow and not consistent ( as in the beginning of the video) There are a bit of hunting. As this is supposed to be a professional video camera (?) The autofocus is completely unacceptable.
Exactly! Professional VIDEO cameras aren't suppose to rely on auto focus. Most professional grade camera only do MF because they want you in complete control of the scene. Auto focus for video is only for "TH-camrs" for talking head videos xDDD
@@Samiam-mu5ln So sports video photographer should rely on manual focus 🙂 In my opinion autofocus is absolutely essential in many situations at least to me, and so many cameras nail this (even my phone is better than the GH4 (and probabaly 6.....) )
I have sold all my Pana stuff, When they dident fix this in GH6, I had to move on 😞

Definite improvement. Still looks like it's overcorrecting a bit too far, but it gets back in focus pretty quick.
I would say its totally usable now =)
To me, I use auto focus only when I am doing gimbal shots. I am still using a GH5 and I have to avoid moving too fast just to avoid the slow auto focus. I already have so much to worry about and don't have any mental room left to do manual focus.

When i make videos with my lumix cameras, i use mostly olympus pro and leica lenses and MANUAL focus !!! So the next camera will be ....a lumix !

Wow it still has trouble autofocusing when cameras from 2015 did continuous autofocusing just fine....

The deal braker is - it has no object focus tracking like sony or canon. That means you cant track objects, cars etc. So it's still very limited. But better of course than GH5
It does have object tracking but its not as good I would say =)

Good video about AF, but your background indoors is not of different colors and with out of focus lights.
True, I don't tend to have lights in my backgrounds, but Im working on a very in depth video about the af on the gh6.
I wish my G7 had this AF 😩
Still struggles with fast movements
I think it keeps up really nice, som of the softness you see is motionblur, but perhaps som af also, I think it looks very good.

I film models while moving. No jumping in and out the frame like a clown like so many youtubers do. I hold my distance and models move quite slow. Real liife use if you do boudoir videos and similar stuff. Even my gh5 af was good enough for this and gh6 is even better

Still way, way down on the very most bottom-tier compared to what virtually everyone else is doing in 2022. So incredibly frustrating, because otherwise Panasonic makes the best, most feature-rich, most user-friendly cameras on the market. If they'd invested as much effort into a hybrid system as they have DFD, they'd be doing it better than Sony or Canon. If they're still refusing to do it due to image quality concerns, they need to just get over it... The other OEMs have proven that it's a non-issue with modern sensor designs.
The AF is not as good as my A7Siii but its fully usable in my opinion, I have not had the troubles that som reviews had have, I also got the final firmware the day I got the camera so that might have something to do with their not so stellar reviews =)
The features are incredible on the Panasonic cameras =)
The 10-25mm is the lens thats making me consider the GH6. My fullfame workflow is 20mm to 50mm for the last seven years shooting social media content. Having one lens and no gimbal or tripod is 💥💥💥💥💥

AF is trash. It’s 2022 and this is inexcusable. They basically made a great camera with old technology when it came to AF. I shoot with a G9 and see no reason at all to upgrade based on all these tests of the GH6.
It’s not trash, I’ve used it for two weeks and it’s worked covert well, nits not as good as Sony a7s3, but it’s good
@@ArberBaqaj right, that’s fine for what you’re using it for. I should be specific though. I do vlog style work. My camera is not stationary like yours. In my locale that is an invitation to getting it stolen lol.
Anyhow the pulsing seems to be there. That’s a problem with the contrast based autofocus they are using.
Since it’s said they were developing this camera even before the GH5, I really do think it’s merely the fact that phase detect AF was not viable years ago, they stuck with this.
