I traveled the same path from start to finish yesterday. Its amazing to walk in Nelsons footsteps, and because of his documentation we have an accurate comparison of then to now. Thanks for uploading these videos and please keep it up Dick.
They drove pass the Colonial Bakery !! (now the Edgewood plaza) had that whole area smelling like fresh baked Sunbeam Giant Loaf OMG! Loved that little store for all your pastry needs
I am cracking up that the video ended with no words after that plate of food lol. I know they had to go straight to sleep after that good food! Lol. That is a definite call for nap time😴&🍗 Win Win
these are really incredible videos. the folks in the video (and the time and place) are interesting in themselves but even more than that it's the feeling you get when you find someone's entire belongings tossed out onto the street, and you go inspect it for free stuff, but then you can't help but look through it all, and try to reconstruct who that person is from what's before you
Yup! I found it too! Thanks! 0:17 The house on the left no longer has a garage but the drive way is paved in. Awww. So cool how far technology has come. Gotta love Google Street View/ Google Earth
This place must have closed in 1990 or 1991 or forget but I remember eating here as a little kid and still live in the neighborhood. Amazing video as it finally reveals the exact location of the mysterious Funtone Headquarters in Candler Park as it turns out (Adolphus between Arizona and Nelms), where Dick Richards produced the American Music Show for public access cable for 25 some odd years on a budget of 5$ per week! It was Richards that first discovered/recorded/broke non other than multiple Emmy winning queer icon RuPaul who mentioned him in his Emmy acceptance speech a mere weeks after Mr. Richards passed away. A true underground/queer icon of an Atlanta long past and an iconic restaurant (and just a glimpse of its famous proprietor in his chefs cap there Mr. Burton himself).
Deacon's Burton's grill actually stayed open till about 2016 ...when the owner died. Think his son tried to run it afterwards...but it wasn't the same and soon became a different restaurant. But wow! Deacon's had one heck of a run from the 20th to the 21st century. ❤️❤️
@@b.a.brackus6371 I don't know if you're right, or the other guy. Either way that looked like one proper soul food establishment I would of loved to visit.

There you go, Nelson! Ain’t nothing like a good soul food dinner baby. Glad he enjoyed! Such amazing footage.
I love that they served the food in the old school cafeteria tray.
Hugh Simon reminds me of middle school!
It's so ergonomic I eat off plates like that all the time
I’d totally forgotten about them til I saw them here! Pretty efficient concept, when you think about it.
Nelson serves us yet again.❤️
I live in Atlanta (born & raised) and till this day, everything still looks similar!
I’m from Doraville lol right outside of ATL
I don't think they've fixed a single pot hole on Dekalb Ave. since this was shot.
That food looks so good. It's so weird seeing food back then, knowing it's already been consumed and shit out decades ago.

I love how he just let Dick talk and be our tour guide during the ride there. Classy move on Nelson's part which doesn't surprise me.
