Dear instead of burlap you can use some other woven fabric like net. Or even a cloth called tissue, organza or something similar. These are a bit shimmery but if you really search you will find less shimmery things that you can make leaves of. Just make sure you don't go for very dark bright colors. If you can't find jute rope you can use thick knitting wool in beige color and what ever you are planning. To make them a bit stiff spray with starch spray or apply transparent glue and let dry before you shape them. I hope this helps.
