I love that the fundamental piece of missing context for Dan is that he wasn’t online enough to be inundated with Buzzfeed quizzes, but Arin and Allie both have that base understanding of the flow and meter of a Buzzfeed quiz, so they know exactly what to expect and can feel when the absurdity hits correctly. I like knowing that Dan’s a big fan of Onion material since he’s aware enough of actual news article headlines to appreciate the absurd twist, and I feel he’s just that one life experience away from also getting these clickhole jokes.
Yeah I got this feeling during the video. I was suprised Arin didn't see this and bring it up too in response to Dans confusion. Dan clearly understands absurdist humor and parody, but as he doesn't understand the source of what they're trying to parody he can't see the humor in it. Kind of like if you tried to quote game grumps jokes to members of your family, it's not going to hit at all because there are many layers of context completely lost

@@adfdasdfadfadsfareae The reality is the existence of Buzzfeed quizzes. I feel like that's the main difference between this and The Onion. The Onion is making fun of politicians and corporations and stuff that are in the news, and not so much making fun of newspapers themselves. But Clickhole is primarily just making fun of Buzzfeed and the people who click on their links.
I think what gets me with these is the amount of commitment to the bit. Like, every quiz introduces a couple bits, and they just keep going and going and going and gradually escalating and treating themselves with such disproportionate seriousness that the sheer absurdity boils over from confusion into hilarity.
The line that absolutely killed me at 6am, unable to sleep and eating ice cream out of boredom while sick and tired of being sick with covid... "Arin I want to 'yes, and' everything we do here, but I think I hate this." I almost woke up my roommates cackling.
when arin was laughing so hard at the sponge dipped in soy sauce part, i can only imagine that dan was awkwardly looking at arin and found it funny enough to break character.
one of these two is inevitably going to retire one day (not trying to be a buzzkill, just realistic) and i feel like Allie would be the replacement. it’s cool but also somewhat unusual that she’s become more and more increasingly proactively involved in actual episodes rather than a behind the scenes character. who knows, maybe that’s what they’re priming her up for. after all both Dan and Arin are now married. who’s to say one of them doesn’t wanna kick their feet up with the money they’ve amassed and call it a day, maybe start a family and have a few kids. maybe i’m looking a bit too deep into it, but i think it’s a possibility.
Confused Dan is always the most calming thing to me. Its like he's trying to navigate the odd futuristic, abstract state of the human mind that we have now. But he's also just unsure if he is happy with his life choices, or wishes he had joined that Rush cover band in high school that went on to tour at three seperate Olive Garden locations before breaking up because one of them admitted they were actually a bigger fan of Journey.
extremism, and parody of extremism, almost inevitably, become inseparable and indistinguishable. Buzzfeed is extremism, Clickhole is the parody of extremism, and 9 times out of 10, you cover that clickhole logo and you'd think you were on buzzfeed
Dan, I feel you. Your entire experience from "haha.... interesting??" to "we are DYING. ATROPHY AS WE SPEAK" to "......am I insane?" like... full blown dissociation/feeling like you're being gaslit by everyone else thinking something is great is how I felt watching Napoleon Dynamite.
I think the funniest part of this is Dan not understand what the hell is happening and reading everything with bewilderment. I need more of this in my life.
So, in case Dan (or someone else) watches this later, I will attempt to explain the humor: In a normal quiz the questions are just the road to the pay-off, which is the result. In these quizzes however, the pay-off is in increasingly surreal questions and/or answers. The funny lies in either repeating a joke with varying outcomes (the Mrs Lisa one or the fly swatter), escalating (Grundor) or through recognition (The sword one) and the idea is usually that you eventually will go "wtf?!" and laugh because it's so bizarre. Personally I generally think they are pretty hit and miss, but the Grundor one was top tier though.
The sword one especially is more of a unique way to tell a story. You're learning about these kids' lives and you have to put the pieces together as to which answer is which kid.
Appreciate the explanation. I've come back to this video three times and I still don't think I can finish it, this one just... I'm sitting here like Dan is basically, haha. The past couple of "quiz" type episodes that feature sites like this have missed the mark. I think their peak quiz-type show was when they prepared riddles for each other.
Yeah. It's kinda like those surreal memes like there's a horse with 4 wings, 3 eyes, 2 human heads coming out of its abdomen with the caption "GEORGE IS ENRAGED. PRESENT HIM THE POTATOES FROM THE DIMENSION UYX-8686 AND THE ESSAY ON ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S PRESIDENCY AND THE CIVIL WAR, OR YOUR SOUL WILL BE CONSUMED."
To try and elaborate even further, I'd say there's like three big parts to it: parody, narrative and the writing itself. 1) Arin mentioned it's sort of a parody of those Buzzfeed quizzes. Apart from using the format, it feels like it reflects the vapidness of those quizzes, and how they either stretch to make the link between the answers and the result make sense, or don't stretch in the slightest (i.e. if you pick that you like green in a quiz about which gen 1 Pokemon starter you are, you get Bulbasaur). I think these quizzes play around with that to some degree, where they go so far off course as to be amusing, or show complete disregard for how you answer. 2) They're threading background narratives into the quizzes. Each of the people holding flyswatters has a dumb story as to why they have a flyswatter. Grundor lives under the sink and gets fed almonds. Mrs. Lisa is a design expert and people impersonate her. One of the kids buying swords is curious about puberty and maybe doesn't have a father figure. As mentioned, basic methods like repetition and escalation are used a lot to highlight the more amusing parts of the stories. And various aspects can be twisted using the format (i.e. 4 of the 5 answers to a question might be "legit", and the last one is just a reference to the background narrative, like telling Grundor his question sucks). 3) Just the writing itself can be funny, like any script can. Comedic principles like timing and subversion apply, but also just fairly straightforward jokes. Like the question in the feet quiz that said many insurance policies define fucked-up toenails as those that are "infested with all kinds of shit". The humour being that a policy obviously wouldn't use such casual, vague language (and I imagine that a policy wouldn't specify anything about toenails in the first place).
there are many flavours of grump moments but I think my favourite flavour may well be "arin is losing it while dan reads flatly reads something fucking insane".
The Lisa quiz made me uncomfortable because I worked at a place called Lisa's Gallery for 10 years and now, I fear I was working for an imposter for a decade.
@@Figgs313 That would imply I was trying to make a joke. I was just digging at how you managed to make an incorrect use of such a blatantly self-explanatory expression.

one of these two is inevitably going to retire one day (not trying to be a buzzkill, just realistic) and i feel like Allie would be the replacement. it’s cool but also somewhat unusual that she’s become more and more increasingly proactively involved in actual episodes rather than a behind the scenes character. who knows, maybe that’s what they’re priming her up for. after all both Dan and Arin are now married. who’s to say one of them doesn’t wanna kick their feet up with the money they’ve amassed and call it a day, maybe start a family and have a few kids. maybe i’m looking a bit too deep into it, but i think it’s a possibility.
I don't care what's happening on-screen; Arin's cackling breathes life into the world.
this is one of the funniest GG videos ive seen. the Grundor quiz mixed with Arin's laughter made me cry
I like that they have an open tab of a spreadsheet for their game list lol
What the Lovelies wouldn’t give to see that list (and be able to edit it).
Ya gotta keep the "real work" close by so you can switch over quickly when the boss walks by.
I've legitimately never heard Dan be so quiet during an episode
I’ve legitimately never laughed so little during an episode, so it fits
@@senatorsparky you forgot to make your comment make sense at all, man
@@senatorsparky I've laughed at this episode more than any other GameGrumps episode so I think I made up for your lack of humour :)
@@senatorsparky well it's good to know that Dan isn't entirely alone in his inability to appreciate the comedy. Sorry it wasn't for you
Dan's rant about clickhole was the perfect description of buzzfeed. "People are dying, why are we here?"
extremism, and parody of extremism, almost inevitably, become inseparable and indistinguishable. Buzzfeed is extremism, Clickhole is the parody of extremism, and 9 times out of 10, you cover that clickhole logo and you'd think you were on buzzfeed
Yes Buzzfeed is bad, but Clickhole...is good
Hearing Allie cracking up so hard, it was being picked up by Dan and Arin's mics was freaking wonderful.
Arin just breaking over Grundor's questions pleases me greatly
I thought Grundor did a wonderful job. Alas, I am all out of floor almonds.
For everyone who was curious, answering Grundor's questions positively gives you "Iron Man"
Thank you for your service
You can also get Spider-Man and Black Widow.
Can't wait for the animated version of this with Grundor.
I haven’t heard arin laugh this hard since Akane said “ yo hajime check it out I’m already eating ! “ 😂😂😂
So, in case Dan (or someone else) watches this later, I will attempt to explain the humor:
In a normal quiz the questions are just the road to the pay-off, which is the result.
I think their peak quiz-type show was when they prepared riddles for each other.
im with dan on this one......an attempt at comedy quizzes...i was wtf the whole time
16:53 i need to timestamp the grundor quiz because i will be coming back to this episode a great many times
there are many flavours of grump moments but I think my favourite flavour may well be "arin is losing it while dan reads flatly reads something fucking insane".
The fact that he said "this one's all for you" and then immediately proceeded to adopt the role of a submissive cave gremlin is just too perfect
The Lisa quiz made me uncomfortable because I worked at a place called Lisa's Gallery for 10 years and now, I fear I was working for an imposter for a decade.
that grundor bit is GOLD oh my god I laughed so hard I choked
Grundor is my new favourite character danny has ever not wanted to do
The fact that he kept listing of the choices starting with “A” even though it was a numerical list 😂
@@miguelnewmexico8641 well I think it was an accident at first but then became self aware
Nah, he just really likes saying "eh" a lot now. Says it's from his British Overwatch buddy he plays a lot with. :P
Arin loosing it to Grundor was the funniest thing
you can hear Dan dissolving slowly as he reads as grundor
I genuinely love how the samurai sword quiz slowly reveals to you each child's insane personality with each question
I was not prepared for Dan's hilarious audible confusion rolling into the Grundor quiz moments, completely lost my shit 🤣
Arin ABSOLUTELY DYING from laughter + Allie's cute giggles/random breaking character + Dan absolute confusion/agony of these quizzes = QUALITY EPISODE
Allie breaking character? Didn't realize Allie was supposed to be playing a character.
@@majorgnu *crickets*
@@Figgs313 That would imply I was trying to make a joke. I was just digging at how you managed to make an incorrect use of such a blatantly self-explanatory expression.
@@majorgnu just move on, playa. You are doing too much...
@@Figgs313 "just move on," they say after 3 weeks have passed. Can't make this shit up.
Arin continuously ignoring Dan and chugging along is killing me XD
I think there is a new instance of Arin's hardest laugh
The icing on the cake is definitely the Grundor quiz. Arin and Allie just dying cry-laughing the entire time really set the mood xD
