    Nice episode dude! I was distracted 15 times writing this comment! 😂 life’s full of them. You seem to have no problem keeping up with everything. Onward to wiring! looking forward to it. 😎🤘

      Thanks, man! I think as long as I’m down there working on something this thing will keep moving forward!

    Making good progress -- seeing you move forward keeps me motivated to keep going! Just got to get some pesky kitchen cabinets out of the way and I can get back to airplane work!

      I’ve indefinitely delayed all unrelated projects until the end of the build. The door Chomp chewed on while a puppy. Not fixed. Sticky drawer in the kitchen. Not adjusted.
      I even tried doing the same thing to laundry and other simple chores but was forced to relax my “no unrelated tasks” policy.

    You forgot what your were doing during a 20-foot walk? Oh man, I LONG for those days! I formulate a plan at my table, stand up, and instantly forget what I was going to do! Nice progress on the wiring.

    New Camera Ryan? - The close-up shots are really sharp. Keep up the good work - Riveting work looks OK to me
    Really enjoy your down to earth commentary on this build.
    Your TH-cam Channel is one I look forward to each week from Australia.

      I upgraded a couple months ago, and while there’s a bit of a learning curve, I’m able to get footage that goes way beyond what was available on the GoPro. It’s really been a game changer.
      Thanks for the feedback and continued viewership!!

      And then inevitably still pull from the bin and think, “oh shit, well… next one.” And then the next one gets pulled from the bin and I think, oh shit, well… next one…”

    Pro tip for smoothing sealant. Spit on your finger and use that instead of a tongue depressor. You’ll get the benefit of dexterity/control without the sealant sticking to your finger. Sounds strange but it works.

    • @RyanFlysPDX
      @RyanFlysPDX  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was using the stick to scrape off excess, and then a swab dipped in thinner (acetone, I think actually) to smooth. The acetone works like the spit.
      Thought your approach has the “nuts and bolts” charm mine lacks!
      Thanks for the tip-I guarantee I’ll be using it soon!

    Hey Ryan,
    I'm about to add power for my Advanced Panel. Think I need doublers on the firewall to mount ANL fuse and shunt?

    • @RyanFlysPDX
      @RyanFlysPDX  27 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yeah, I think I have doublers on all those components around there. Contractors, shunt, ANL, yeah.

    //// FOR FUTURE REFERENCE: ////
    You see how transparent that reservoir is? During Condition Inspection, an easy dipstick for checking fluid level is white (or light colored) 4" (-ish) plastic zip tie. Mark a Sharpie line on the tie equal to the height of the reservoir barrel, and use the zip tie as a dipstick. (Cap is Metric M10x1.0) {IIRC uses 7/16 wrench}

    Don't you h*te it when you have to use a double offset and the rivets look marginal after you're done??? Drives me crazy. BTW, you do a fantastic job describing the challenges we face as builders. Very refreshing to hear somebody admit it publicly.

    • @RyanFlysPDX
      @RyanFlysPDX  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Double offset is the worst. I’ve found that taping the set so it doesn’t rotate, plus adding a bit of tape to the cup of the set, as you would a mushroom set to keep it from marring, both really help!!

    Love your videos! I'm building an RV14A and and working on the wings now but I'm planning and prepping for the fuselage and avionics. Can I ask where you would recommend I start when looking for avionics? I like the Garmin set up and was wondering how it all worked? when you order the kits through Van's does it go through them? is it completely separate? any general info or direction you might point me in? thanks

    • @RyanFlysPDX
      @RyanFlysPDX  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Avionics are separate from Van’s. They’re purchased in addition to the build kits, and most systems will range from $15k-$45k, not including wiring or installation.
      Going in to this, I didn’t know much about avionics. I knew there were two main camps: Garmin and not Garmin. Not Garmin includes Advanced Flight Systems/Dynon, Avidyne, and others. Garmin is, well, Garmin.
      Both camps are incredibly powerful and capable. Both systems have pros and cons. There is no run away winner.
      It might be wiser to figure out what you need before you figure out who makes it. VFR? IFR? IFR light? Heck you may even decide to go analog and have a six-pack and some limited additions like a G5.
      IFR requires an expensive navigator, but VFR only could possible be the largest limitation put on your plane. Conversely, many pilots have no desire (or even need) to ever fly IFR.
      Any avionics company worth their markup can take 30 minutes to run you through these decisions. If they can’t, they don’t deserve your business. They can outline many of the decisions you’ll need to make, and possibly even make some recommendations based on your mission profile, budget, and wants/needs.
      Start to put some feelers out for quotes. Probably start taking a look at some more in-depth videos that highlight the individual components (Midwest Panel Builders have some good ones!), and start to look at some existing panels and identify what the various components are for and what you like/don’t like.
      Stay tuned here as well, as I hope to delve into each component in my system and tell more about it as they’re brought online.

    @8:29 if that ANL fuse blows off in flight how do you replace it?

    • @RyanFlysPDX
      @RyanFlysPDX  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If the ANL blows we’re on battery backup to the nearest airport.

      @@RyanFlysPDX wait, is it because of electronic fuel injection? Shouldn't the engine run without electric power?

    • @RyanFlysPDX
      @RyanFlysPDX  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @bibrakc I’m not running electronic ignition or injection. Mechanical injection. It’ll run w/o the main battery (p-mags and self exciting) so no need for redundant power. The battery backup will keep instrumentation online, and the motor can keep running on its own.

      Unfortunately I won’t be able to make it. Have to keep resources aligned on the project for now.
      It may be that the first time I go to Airventure is in the 7, which might not be a terrible thing.

      It’s be one thing if you had some space to work, but your always caught working upside down and backwards on one foot’s tippy toes.
