    Boardwalk Empire was so great. They made each year a season (1920, 1921, etc.). It drove me nuts that they wrapped the series up after 1924, skipping 1925 and going straight to 1931. They bypassed the whole 1929 Atlantic City Conference!! WHY!?! I guess they just didn't want to do the show that long... but they totally could have. I loved every second of it.

      I've heard things such as the hurricane destroyed most of the sets and HBO really saw something in game of thrones, so all the focus went into that.

      It skipped SO MUCH. It's a shame because that era likely won't get a show again. And man, they had so many of those roles filled correctly.

    Good Evening Michael,
    All due respect, Don Masseria and Don Maranzano, were alive and kicking in 1929. Luciano, was Boss's lieutant at the time. The meeting's purpose was, those new-school backstabbs, to find a way to make a move against the 2 Dons (and the whole Old-Guard). That's the history!!!!!!!!!!!!
    God Bless you and your family,
    Salut!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I just saw a piece on BBC News about the upcoming general election in Italy. They did a segment on Sicily talking to people about their voting choices. When they went into the interior and some of the suburbs they showed how deep poverty is still in large parts of Sicily, some of the poorest areas in all of Europe. The poverty & lack of economy was really acute, and its easy to see how cosa nostra grew from this society, where government and aristocrats had forsaken them to poverty, and power structures for protection had to arise from somewhere, and also easy to see why people emigrated in such large numbers from Sicily, carrying with them the culture and structures of the old land, that transplanted into American cities, and grew into the American mafia that became so powerful, and carried with it the imagination, through cinema and legend, across the English speaking world and beyond

      The sad thing is that many Sicilians themselves (not all though) allowed this to happen. They didn't try to change their situations, but instead facilitated the creation of criminal organizations and/or allowed bad regional governments to continue to lead the region.

    • @pierpaoloparisi2049
      @pierpaoloparisi2049 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Poverty, of itself, wasn't , and isn't, the problem. Key was abuse of State power. Sicily is the most conquered island on earth. Since ancient Roman times. Its masters were mostly brutal. When the State, which is supposed to protect the population, is a threat to it, a dynamic of perpetual mistrust and enmity develops.

    • @brianmccarthy5557
      @brianmccarthy5557 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Provinces like Basilicata in the Italian "boot" are even poorer and more miserable than Sicily. No small reason for this is government corruption, of which the Mafia has long been an integral part. They're not so much the product of the poverty as a cause.

No $#!+ the rock steps and placement had to have been made by giants or aliens. It makes no sense. Stone slabs for steps and complimentary slabs of stone next to them. Then 8x8 logs used to make steps. Great journey

    Michael, consider sharing stories about the Cosa Nostra (Our Thing) in other cities.
    Example: I grew-up in Saint Louis. Though my parents were Spanish and French Immigrants, as were our extended families, we lived in the “Dago Hill” (Little Italy) section; similar to where I live now in San Francisco “North Beach.”
    Italian and Spanish culture and language are similar. So, we were warmly welcomed and accepted. Both are also Catholic.
    I worked for them from Ages 9-18 as a “messenger and bag boy.”
    Fact is, the Mafia was based in what is now simply known as “The Hill” Yet Mafia fronts were scattered throughout the Saint Louis Metropolitan Area, including across the Mississippi into Granite City, Illinois which was highly industrial.
    As You probably know, the Mafia were in Kansas City as well as in Detroit.
    No doubt, the Mafia were in The San Francisco Bay Area, based in North Beach. The old Italian Club Fronts are still here.
    As You reveal, the Mafia was in Atlantic City.
    Whereas films tend to only portray Cosa Nostra in New York, Chigao, Las Vegas, New Jersey and maybe Los Angeles.
    Point is, there are other stories yet to be told.
