- What makes this the greatest waterfall hike in California? Well, the Seven Falls Trail of Santa Barbara has it ALL. From the very start, this popular Santa Barbara hike meanders along gorgeous forest trails and streams until hikers reach the first major waterfall. From there, it's a choose your own adventure. Bold and adventurous hikers can continue on up the 7 falls, a route that requires swimming, scrambling, climbing, some rope work, and awesome hidden waterfalls! After you're done exploring the 7 falls, there's another option to continue up the trail to find the hidden pools, which are another absolutely spectacular water feature. Which pool would you jump in?
Part of the reason this Santa Barbara hike is so incredible is because hikers of almost all skill levels can find something to enjoy here. If scrambling is not your thing, spend some time relaxing by the first major waterfall. If cold plunging and adrenaline are your thing, and you've got some climbing experience, there is so much to add to make your own awesome southern california waterfall hike!

Haha yes Michael! Adam did have a minor hissy fit early on about all the poison oak but it only lasted for about 30 seconds, and after that it was truly all joy all the time. Waterfall season is the best!!! ❤️
Omigosh! I never knew Santa Barbara held such marvels! I used to go there to rock climb, but I'd rather have gone waterfall chasing! The music of the rushing waters partially provided a magical soundtrack, but I'm missing your wonder-filled arias!
Mark we were in the same boat! Honestly, if it wasn't for subscribers repeatedly recommending Santa Barbara we would never even have known to look for amazing hikes there. And not to worry, after a couple more waterfall adventures we will have some epic Sierra adventures coming up in July that will definitely require an epic soundtrack!! ❤️

Totally agree. There is nothing more pleasurable than a sweaty, challenging hike where the "summit" is an epic waterfall with no one around. Yes this one is definitely worth a trip, and if you have a few days you can climb up to Tangerine Falls another day, which is also pretty awesome. Santa Barbara is an awesome under the radar hiking destination! ❤️

Really glad you have put this one on your bucket list! You will 100 percent not regret it -- it is absolutely amazing! One caveat -- there might not be as much water in the falls if you go later in the summer. Right now they are glorious, but they will get much lower as the non-rainy season progresses. ❤️

What a awesome waterfall adventure guys! Each fall had its merits individually, they were all so beautiful. The joy on your faces made this whole vlog one of your best in bringing out the kid in you both. My favorite Cascades are on Kern River up road to Sherman Pass. Kernville side. Also has the twin falls on hwy. Both are easier to walk to than this but it is remote area. Got 100 giants to. It's about the drive. Keene to Kernville Caliente Road?

I love waterfall hunting. I tried four times to find a rumored waterfall in the mountains near my house, but the first two times, I couldnt find it. 3rd time found it, but it was dry. 4th time, it was roaring, but someone removed the ropes to get there. Still fun though
Yes! Love your persistence in the waterfall hunt. That is exactly the kind of thing we love to do too. Sometimes Adam will just go on Google Earth and try to find us waterfalls where there isn't even any kind of trail to them. It's such an amazing feeling when you arrive at a magical place with no one else around -- and the harder it is to get to the more likely that is to happen!! ❤️

I was looking forward to this one and y'all did not disappoint.
It has been years since I did this hike and it is in my backyard. Once I tried scaling the wall on the left side of the falls in pool 3 trying to stay dry and lost footing scrapping my knees on the way down into the water, oh well it was well worth it.
Seven falls is a special place to us here in SB and it's good to see someone has outfitted some places with rope which wasn't there the last time I did this hike... You lucked out with having the place all to yourselves that day, so Awesome. Now you inspired me to head up there for a revisit before the creek dries up and mosquitos take over👍.
Heck yes, Art! Super psyched you're going to go up. It is absolutely amazing right now. That's interesting that the rope didn't used to be there -- it would be a much more challenging climb without it for sure. Though with that said, I wound up scraping my knee even with the rope! 😂 But like you say, still totally worth it. What a gem of a hike! --A

Awesome video, Elise and Adam! Loved these waterfalls - very fresh (also must have been very fresh to be there). Have you just done it now at the beginning of June? Seems like also a very secluded trail... Love seeing more of this kind of hikes in the future!

Yes we did this right at the beginning of June, and from what we've heard the water should still be flowing well for the next month at least! ❤️

Thanks Larry! Ya we did catch a bit of poison oak on this trip, but thankfully no rattlers which seems like a fair trade. We've gotten pretty good at remembering to wear tights through the oakiest places to at least avoid having it all over our legs, but it still somehow finds a way! ❤️

On a hike out from Picacho del Diablo, we stopped at a small pool to swim. In my bare feet I slipped on the mossy rocks and fell on my side badly bruising my ribs. I was sore as hell till we went to San Felipe that night and had "Mas Tequila." Then I didn't feel anything until the next morning. 😄

Heck yes! Definitely do it while the water is still flowing -- you will absolutely not regret this one it is utterly gorgeous and not crowded at all if you go first thing in the morning. We were literally the first ones up there, and never saw other people until on the way back. You're going to love it! ❤️

Ya Bobby we didn't see any on this hike, but we've come across quite a few over the years in SoCal. We try to stay FAR away from them though, and go a long way around whenever we see them! ❤️

Yes Alan! The falls were all spectacular, but the ones at the pools at end were the best of all. Just how it should be. Ya poison oak is a real pain, but honestly we're getting used to the occasional exposure. At least the water washes it off! ❤️

Thanks very much! Sure, we use a GoPro 10 for moving action shots (because it has better image stabilization) and an iPhone 14 for when the camera is standing still. ❤

you got to put horsetail fails off highway 50 near Tahoe on your list it. can be used to access the crystal range traverse.
Marc that is a great recommendation and it is literally right at the top of our list. We're going to do some hiking and climbing out of Bishop, and then follow that with Tahoe and Horsetail will likely be our first adventure there! ❤️

What is the water source? Snowmelt? Great Boulder scrambling🐬
Thanks Mary! The Santa Ynez mountains are a bit too low for snowmelt, so this is just groundwater from rainfall coming down from higher up the mountains. That's one reason waterfall season doesn't last for too long around here -- once the water dries up for the year, there's no melting snow to keep it coming so you have to wait until after the next rainy season! ❤️
Oh last time I was in Santa Barbara I only had the time to do 3 peaks which is in the same spot of seven waterfalls 😭😭😭
Yes! Now that Adam is early retired we can actually take more time in these great places to do all the hikes, but totally relate to that feeling of having to choose! But now you can go back for the falls next waterfall season!! ❤️

We're so excited! Our first stop will be Bishop for a few weeks, and then probably Tahoe after that. We plan to try lots of different mountain playgrounds before picking one to settle in! ❤️

That's a great question. We've actually considered using a drone for recon before, especially on off-trail hikes where we don't have beta or aren't quite for some other reason aren't quite sure about the route. But remember they're illegal in any national park, so there's a limit to where they can be used. ❤️

We were just discussing it with some friends at dinner yesterday! It's not for us, because we do so much long distance stuff that we really need to eat a lot of carbs. And also, we both like vegetables a lot. But carnivore/keto type diets can be very effective for getting ripped. It's just that it puts you into a low-glycogen state so it makes it hard to do hard long distance cardio. ❤️
It is no wonder you find water cold - you both have little R-value at nearly 0% body fat!
Haha we definitely both have more R-value than we used to, but are for sure trying to keep fit for the epic year of adventuring we have coming up! ❤️

California is an “…Exciting Adventurer’s Holiday…” anyway, where those areas, are mostly out-lands, remote beaches, and mountainous terrain, which +95% of Americans (even Californians) have never seen, ever….

Did you get poison oak? 😟
Yes Adam did end up with some poison oak even though he washed it off thoroughly with water. But thankfully it wasn't nearly as bad as he's had it in the past, probably because he did rinse thoroughly. ❤️
Spring fed, the water never really warms up.

Yes, the trick is to do challenging hikes with some off trail scrambling and to start very early in the morning -- that combination usually leaves us all alone out there! ❤️

Haha it's ok Joe -- truth be told there's no way I would have climbed some of the parts that Adam did even on a bet (unless it was a really big bet 😂). He makes it look really easy, and it probably is for him because he practices so much in the climbing gym and has become a really good climber, but there were a couple of sections where I might have slipped and cheese-gratered myself on the way down. So I am definitely okay with him doing those parts solo! ❤️ --E

I need to get up to Santa Barbara more. I don't think to do it. That is an awesome set of waterfalls and pools. You two kill it with the video quality, editing, creating your own music. So entertaining! So inspiring every time.

Haha I know Mickey, that's always the question. On the one hand, the ones on this hike looked in pretty good shape except for that terrible one Adam used toward the top of the falls. I didn't even see that until we were editing the footage, but I would definitely not have trusted that rope! ❤️
