It's about time they start making these helicopter's again! I'm glad! Now they need to bring back the Bell 47!
When I was born, My Dad worked for Hiller Helicopters in Palo Alto, CA. The first book I ever owned was a maintenance manual for a UH-12E! I knew every part of that helicopter and used to sit and make engine sounds while pretending to "fly" with the cockpit diagram page open in the book... I ended up an ATP helicopter pilot and Flight Instructor. It's great to know that Hiller is still around. Maybe some day I'll get to fly one!
I went through the A&P course at Reedley College. My roommate worked for Hiller in Porterville(?) in the late 70's
@@obsoleteprofessor2034 Yeah, we almost moved to Porterville around 1967-ish when they moved there from Palo Alto. My Dad decided it was not worth it and went to work for Lockheed. I can't even imagine how my life would have changed if we had moved....

Wow, thank you, Maria! I remember Hillers from the '50s as being workhorses, often used in crop dusting. It's exciting to see them making a comeback. My favorite was the Hiller Hornet, a single-place tip jet-powered model intended for the Army. Not sure if it actually worked or not, but I had the model.

Great and exciting video. My first helicopter ride ever was in an OH23D at Ft.Wolters, Tx when I was a cadet in the Civil Air Patrol. Was in the late 60s and I was hooked. Love the Hillers. My favorite helicopter!

So pleased that you have organised this walk around and hopefully we can see the Hiller UH-12E flying soon as well,Mike does a really good walk around job on this interesting design and you have a rare bird there on the helipad,the paddles design is interesting and if you study rotor blade advancing and retreating blade behaviour the angle of incidence trim on the paddle will become clearer and why it is needed,another function of the paddle is to reduce and dampen the flight load on the blades to the controls,Hiller patented the design and used it on other designs like their tiny Hornet helicopter.
At one time the UH-12 was together with the Bell 47 the mainstay of the crop spraying helicopter fleets,the accessability of the controls and linkages being especially good in the field,the last company to use the UH-12E in the UK for crop spraying was Central Helicopters who suspended operations in 1978 selling their fleet to Greece.
You have a great handle on this subject and system. I say again... this is the best in class. I like to say. If i thought i could get away with it. I would paint them all john Deere green and slap a yellow deer on the side (sic).. glad you enjoyed the video. Love flying this helo.
Actually, I once saw an R44 painted in John Deere color scheme in Oregon. I think it belonged to a John Deere dealer. Tail number even ended with "JD."
@@michaeltragarz2343 I flew cherries next to a Bell 47 that was painted JD green...the guy even flew with a dog as his pax! It was a cool machine up until it decided to throw a rod out of the engine.

Happy to see they are still in production... As a Planner 1 the extended cab you're showing was my first project. After it got approved by FAA.. I got married and moved on. That was in Porterville, before they moved to Washington . Good luck...keep flying

At last to see Hillers being built from new again although i know Hiller have a company in china to, but with the hiller back in production that will help in having a very stable machine for people like my self who need a lower cost and very tough helicopter to learn to fly in, i have been a Hiller fan for more than 40 years plus, and be great to see this great helicopters back in to production and to see them flying here in the UK, best wish's and look forward in seeing more news about new hiller helicopters,Peter

I haven't flown since October. I have another Nick Over the Rocks video to process and I'll be in that. And you'll hear me in an upcoming flight in that Hiller. And I'm still sitting on the fence on whether to drop $400+ to rent an R44 in AZ for 45 minutes or so; despite what people might think, this channel does NOT earn me enough money (yet?) to rent someone else's helicopter (or even fly mine, for that matter).

Interesting you actually tilt the swash plate the direction you want to go even though gyroscopic procession puts the reaction from that force 90° later in the rotation

You are correct. Great system. They were really thinking out of the box as they did with the entire program and design. As i like to say. Pound for pound, dollar for dollar.. best in class.

Love to see the Hiller go back into production, you should use the 305 horsepower set up thats on the four place machine, on the normal three place UH-12 helicopter, as a sling load monster.

I think it is related to that most excellent museum. (I was there about 4 years ago.) as for getting checked out, I assume they put the jump seat in? I honestly don’t know. But here’s a secret: I don’t want to fly one of these. I like my R44 just fine!

@@FlyingMAir - Good to see some new YT activity from you, esp considering your recent hardship.
Realizing one wouldn't want to run low-rotor rpm anyway yet; seems kind of _sketch_ to have de-laminating blades (seems to forfeit any auto-rotation option). I hope they revise that for any new production models.

13:10 Why is the Cargo Release Pedal on the right side? Is it on the right side because most people are right handed/right footed or are there other reasons it's on the right side? Could it have been put on the left side also?
I guess it could have been on the other side but stanley put it in the right. I will look around the factory and see if i can find any documents outlining the reason. But i guess it had to go somewhere. Best i can do on short notice.

Why does it have a military only Hiller D model loop at the tail similar to the Bell 47 loop instead of a traditional Hiller Pogo stick?

I’ve been flying twice, but both times as a passenger. I might rent an R44 next week for a flight up the Salt River. But $$$$! 🙄
I went to look at a three seater years back, it had a controlled off airport landing after the rear support came loose.
The guy took it all apart and put it in his back yard.
It was sad to see the old girl rot into the ground.
It’s tragic to see any aircraft that can be fixed rotting away. 😔

Once the pandemic is over and I survive it, I'm going to buy a helo. Probably a Safari or R44. The Safari is half the cost of the R44 and maintained by the builder.

I’ve been there and I agree that it’s great. Highly recommended. A lot more than just Hillers, if I remember right.
Unfortunately, his explanation of the paddles is not correct. They are simply the aerodynamic method of putting the cyclic pitch changes into the blades. The flapping of the blades equalizes the lift in the rotor disk.
@ik04 - Unfortunately, your stated version seems equally as plausible - do you have any sources for this information, that we could see for ourselves? Thanks.
I was actually talking about the paddles compensating for retreating and advancing paddle effect and how the change in paddle pitch equalized the paddle effect on the control of the dish in any and all directions and especially in forward flight. Sorry if i was not clear.
