I moved here 6 years ago from the US. I love the public footpaths and the stunning scenery just about everywhere. This summer (which in my opinion was actually pretty decent weatherwise after the first week of July) I wasn't able to walk much due to a tendon issue in my foot. It is still not better, and I will be massively depressed if I can't walk again next year. One of my bucket list items is to walk Hadrian's wall (from west to east).
The bread thing is more relevant to most of the rest of Europe. I have had family in Belgium my whole life. There, on every street pretty much is a bakers. We never had 'ready sliced' long life bread when there, it was fresh bread made every day. And it is sooo much better.
There is a great video on the Cheddar channel explaining the difference in chocolate : "Why Europeans Hate the Taste of American Chocolate - Cheddar Explains "(8:31). It has to do with a sour tasting additive the U.S. manufacturers put in to lengthen shelf life.
There are a lot of things we take for granted that others don't have and we need to make sure we keep them . I love our chocolate , but some of the continental brands are different class .
Love them all. Just took a couple of visiting Taiwanese nieces on a Eurorail trip - Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Strasburg and Paris. Food, pastries, beer and historical sites. So easy. Chocolate? Two words: "Butyric Acid" found in vomit and US chocolate.
Hi Amanda, Apparently we're not allowed to sell American Bread here as it's classified as Cake! Seriously because of all the additives you mention plus I was surprised at the difference in additives in a Big Mac in the UK compared to the U.S, Some of the preservatives aren't allowed here...A real eye-opening vid on here regarding differences in Europe & U.S was reviewed by a Lovely American couple I recently started following Mike & Jess at Regeneration Nation who reviewed 'America Compared: Why Other Countries treat their people so much better' they were really shocked obviously because probably like yourself you're taught that the U.S is the greatest country on earth with the most freedoms etc etc (apologies if you've already reviewed it!) Cheers Jim 💚X🇺🇸💚🇬🇧X can send link if you want 👍
The irony of so many "Americans" continually telling themselves - reassurance? - they live in the "freest" is that by most measures they don't even make the top 20... On the other hand, they do manage it for some of the more negative comparisons - like imprisonment rates, firearm deaths - suicide being the most common IIRC, school shootings, mass shootings, etc.
Hi Amanda .Hershey's chocolate is awful waxy chocolate. Compared to British and European chocolate. The prescriptions have to be paid for in England but in Wales Scotland and N Ireland all prescriptions are free to everyone living with in those nations. UK universities are expensive at £9000 per yr in England Scotland and Welsh universities are still expensive but cheaper than England and some European universities are still free. In the UK a student has to earn around £25000 per yr before their loan is payable and the loans rate is held at 0.6 % interest
If you get a heart attack here in Sweden you have to fork out half a year's average salary. Cancer sets you back probably double that. There's no such thing as free.
As someone who doesn't go through bread very fast, i just stick it in the fridge. A single loaf can last over a month before it even starts to go stale. Who needs preservatives
You can get around without a car in America IF you live in an urban setting. I live a half mile from work with a grocery store along the way. I take my car out once a week for shopping but walk everywhere else. It's mid-October and I just filled my gas tank for the third time this year.
As an aside, you are ruining your car by filling it up so infrequently. The ethanol in the fuel makes it go off quickly and it only lasts a couple of months, gumming up the works. I recommend that you put less (fresh) fuel in more frequently say, once a month
Uk chocolate has changed recently, you could try some lindor by lindt chocolate amanda,I had a knee problem I was off work for 3mths and was still paid ssp (statutory sick pay)80% or 60% I think it was of wages,I couldn't imagine how much treatment and physio I would have to pay for and probably get the tin tack in the states
@LADYRAEUK I'm OK now it was about 10yrs ago,the cause was due to getting on and off a forklift truck, ironic really because 99% of the time I was loading and unloading 38tonne lorries
Galaxy is Dove, so Americans have access to it (as well as Lindt, yum). Hershey's should be illegal. I really miss decent mainland sourdough bread, the British loaves are so tiny and pricey. You can get decent bread in some US bakeries, just don't look on the shelves where it is filled with many preservatives. I also miss good bagels, NY state apples 🤤 My husband misses Colby and Monterey Jack cheeses. I am very happy with the cheese choices here. I still wait until I am dying or in unrelenting pain to see the GP, but it is to avoid straining the system instead of the bills. The compounding interest is the real killer on the cost of university loans, although some US universities are absolutely ridiculous. Then again, they mostly cater to the wealthy. Some Americans don't appreciate good coffee, hence the invention of the Americano, haha.
Galaxy.......the British ladies catnip. It's saved my bacon on more than one occasion 😉 Just a thought Amanda, if you fancy reacting to a bit of surreal comedy, try The Jelly Fox Noel Fielding. 👍
I’d hate to live somewhere where I couldn’t walk to the shops & would be lost without my shopping trolley. Do they use shopping trollies in the US? I’d also miss squash, the liquid kind not the vegetable. 😀
The at-will employment is in focus this week after the Impact Plastics scandal where workers were forced to stay at their machines with threat of termination if they didn't until 11 of them were swept away by Hurricane Helene. :-(
You may also recall all the meat processing workers with COVID who were made to keep working - and which resulted in a large percentage of the deaths, as they were infection hot-spots - not just infecting their fellow workers, but with the produce they were working on also going on to infect hundreds of thousands - or millions!
Cadburys is but a mere ghost of itself since it was taken over by Kraft Foods. European chocolate is now better than British chocolate, with the best being Belgian or Swiss
Have tried Hersheys and it tastes like chalk. Much prefer Belgian or Swiss chocolate. I have read about how people struggle with health care and wonder why it is allowed to continue, as there are plenty that continue to be ill and die because they can't afford to get better. One day though I will probably try to visit America or Canada to see what it's really like
@@josephmifsud8261 all my extended family live in Belgium. Every time we visited we would get Leonidas so all other chocolate pales into insignificance.
Your medical facilities are considerably better (but the medical bills would scare the bejesus out of me), USA chocolate tastes like crayola, your other food would be too sweet & I can't drive
On the plus side 😂 You have 10x more space, weather is better, most people are much more welcoming than over here & (in theory) it should be better value for money
The reason Hershey's chocolate tastes like wax is because most of it is wax. (very simple really) The "healthcare" thing is kind of messed up. Often, people who have money will pay to have their healthcare done in the US as it's generally better if a bit over priced.
Richard is fortunate is text you Amanda concerning my level of health care I get my tablets delivered to me from boots the pharmacy because my walking balance is so bad and that medication 💊 costs me nothing Amanda 😘😘😘😘❤️
Born in Dublin, worked in Boston and now in Oxford - good and bad in both - but feel all western countries are making it harder for middle and working class to thrive - around housing - that’s for another day. Very Berton top - tres chic ❤️👍🏽👍☘️
prices in shops in the UK include tax no nasty surprises at checkout.
Not being able to walk to things would blow my mind. It would do my head in 😢
❤ from Northeast England ❤️

Luxury in America just means more of what everyone else considers ordinary. I can't think of a single genuine American luxury brand!

Fantabolous !!! From a Swede living in Spain with heavy UK influence !!!

That's butyric acid that's also present in vomit hence why American chocolate tastes like sick!

@LadyRae you're one of us now. Welcome to decent regulations and NHS
Most prescription meds are free in Scotland.
👍
You can buy tins of chocolates and bars and it's like what's this I just want a bar of galaxy. Oh didn't realise we wewe'e live. Luv yer. ❤
Back in the summer I went on an American cruise ship, the food was best described as bland and tasteless.
Clean food
Just as a side note. Prescriptions in Wales are completely free

1 thing I don't understand with the NHS is DENTISTS!!!! We still have to pay at a Dentist yet that is part of the NHS.

I cannot go anywhere near milk chocolate anymore. I have to have Dark Chocolate and 70%/85% Cocoa Chocolate. Stomach Ulcer Diet now
Cadburys is but a mere ghost of itself since it was taken over by Kraft Foods. European chocolate is now better than British chocolate, with the best being Belgian or Swiss
Leonidas I can highly recommend. Pricey and available on Amazon, but worth it.
This pains me greatly
What utter poppycock.

want ur bread to last longer put it in the fridge
Seriously, Cadbury or Galaxy chocolate? Try Hotel Chocolat, admittedly it is a premium chocolate but far better.
Oh I've had it multiple times, just dont enjoy it as much

We have an easier tax system, where you don't need a tax advisor to help you
America:
Health care, unaffordable.
Higher education,
Unaffordable.
Loads of guns though 💪
6:30 - every year, over a HALF MILLION people in the USA are bankrupted over medical bills!
its a really sad situation
As British not Europeans, it was interesting to watch this.
👍
