I thoroughly enjoyed this. It really brings me back to those wonderous days! My parents were stingy and I rarely got my hands on anything video game related, so I savoured every chance I had to absorb even the lamest of ads. I can still remember the excitement when I see magazines like this. Please do more!
From the bottom of my 37 year old heart I thank u, all my memories rushed right in, I remember everything about each page, I studied these magazines for hours on end, again thank u
Your channel is awesome. I love these magazine episodes especially. It was kind of surreal seeing the egm one with mortal kombat on the front, because I had that issue and read it till it fell apart. Looking forward to more, and thanks for doing this!
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! I am just wrapping up the new episode ("The Launch of the Super Nintendo), and am going to do another read-through fairly soon. Planning on doing a read-through of EGM's first "Super Nintendo Buyers' Guide".
hey yo agreed 100% The Mortal Kombat one was awesome. Back in the early 90s us kids didn't have internet. I would ride my bike up to the grocery store for hours just to check out the latest issue of EGM or Game Pro. Fun, innocent, exciting times!
Great video, it does bring back some forgotten, but very fond, memories to mind. I actually watched this one way after seeing all of the flashback episodes of your other channel, so was able to pick up some references that are part of your flashbacks, which was cool. (like when you mentioned your "friend", which we all now know it's the infamous Jonathan we all hate & love :) )
+Classic Gaming Quarterly I love these magazine reviews. Well I hate to say review, because it's so much more than that. My brother and I loved Nintendo Power, Die Hard Game Fan, Game Pro, and so many others. This is not just a blast to the past for me. Your in depth coverage is journalistic, but as you describe the pages it's like you're reading the magazine with a friend.
Wow, this is giving me some serious nostalgia. Thank you for posting this. I had a Nintendo but I don't remember this magazine. I got into videogame journalism with Nintendo Power, Game Fan, EGM, etc. I rarely regret throwing anything away, but I definitely regret throwing out my videogame mags...
I love this series - I was more into 16-bit as I'm only 32 and grew up with Amiga, however it's still good to look back at the 8-bit stuff too and hear your views on the games you grew up with.
I'm a year older than you, but my first computer was a Tandy TRS-80. That was my first gaming experience, then the NES, SNES, GENESIS, etc. For me it's hard to get into Atari 2600, 5200, 7800. I suppose what ever our launch point is determines what games should be.
cool concept bro. I collect PlayStation systems. I throw on these videos while I take them apart and clean them piece by piece. These videos relax me. Brings me back to the old days. Much appreciated and very cool. Keep it up! Good stuff brotha.
3:44 I looked it up on ebay. The Nintendo Guide goes for about 20-30 bucks, the tips and tactics for zelda is available for 43. I can't quite read the name of that Mario book.
Page 13 is my childhood. Life Force and Bayou Billy. Yes BB is much harder in the North American release, that's why God made Game Genie. Games like Double Dragon III can become BALANCED. I never use invincibility or infinite live codes. Why bother then, right? Life Force is so awesome. Not only is it one of my personal favorite shooters, but it's one of the few excellent co-op shooter on the NES. Years later I finally played Gradius after hearing my brother tell me about it. U U D D L R L R B A B A START.
This might sound a bit weird (or not?), but I actually LOVED game ads in the magazines back in the days. No internet or anything, so those usually were kind of a looks into the future, what will come. Also those usually were so cool looking, many sporting some illustration AND screenshots and some hype text. What's not to like!? :) Otherwise the content and looks of that magazine looks a LOT like what we had in Finland (Nintendo Magazine) before the Nintendo Power came here. I wouldn't be surprised, if Nintendo Fun Club was the direct inspiration for our Nintendo Magazine. I still have those old Finnish Nintendo Magazines, still reading those. :)
+Classic Gaming Quarterly I hear you. I'm sure you put a lot of time into making your videos as great as possible. I can only guess, but I'm sure that you do quite a bit of video and audio recording, writing scripts, editing, etc. I can't think of any other TH-camr who does what you do as well as the quality of the videos in all aspects. I mean for example James Rolfe works really hard on his videos too, but he does humor and Let's Plays. Happy Console Gamer has shared his magazines, but your presentation is totally different. The Video Game Historian is cool, but I like your presentation better and you manage to keep the interest better as well. Just throwing a compliment your way as I've been watching more of your videos these last few days, it's nice to see someone genuinely passionate about the material they are covering.
Jacob Prayer Thanks, man. You are correct about the work that goes in to these. Research/reading, writing the script, playing and recording gameplay footage, writing the script for the game coverage, recording the live segments, recording the voice overs, finding visual material to match up with the narration, and then editing it all together. Honestly couldn't even guess how long it takes to make each video. Good thing I have fun doing it! Hearing how much people enjoy and appreciate the videos makes it all worthwhile, so thank you for taking the time!
+Classic Gaming Quarterly hopefully we can get a DVD/Bluray release in the near future. If I were a part of the Video Game Years documentary series, you'd be one of the first people I'd call. Everything is A+. Tight editing, writing, journalistic yet not robotic. You let the subject be the story and only add personal thoughts and feelings when they are relevant to the topic. One thing that I must say is that when I see videos of extremely high quality I think, "I don't have an HD camera or a mic, I don't have a Mac to edit videos, my laptop is a dinosaur" etc. I want to make videos and have fun. Should I just not worry about what I don't have? I just love video games, since '88 I was playing Tandy TRS-80 and then the NES, etc. I don't have delusions of becoming the next PewPewDie, or scamming people with Kickstarters etc. When I see great videos like yours it makes me want to power up my console and start recording. I guess the hard thing would be to present the games in a unique way.
Jacob Prayer Thanks, man. You're too nice. Honestly, if you have a smartphone then you have an HD camera. Any point & shoot camera made within the last several years will also be able to record in HD. You just have to make sure that you get the lighting right. You can also use your smartphone to record audio. You definitely do not need a Mac to edit video. If you're interested in just having fun making videos, then you should absolutely go for it. I started making videos because I was inspired by what other people were doing. I never thought anyone would watch my stuff. It was just a chance to do something creative.
Yeah, if you played any of the not-so-great games Jaleco put out on the Super Nintendo, they would say "Jaleco" out loud, kind of like the Sega Scream. I think that put all debates to rest. It's funny how many things we had no idea how to pronounce backing the day. Finding out Faxanadu was pronounced "Fah-Zanadu" blew my mind.
The Story of my Crazy Fun Club back issue that was a Xerox Copy. When I was young my parents ordered me a Fun Club News Magazine Subscription and after a few issues they ordered me a back issue that I wanted and here is where the crazy part comes in. Man, that's crazy. I don't know if it would be worth anything just because it would be hard to prove that it was actually from Nintendo, and not something that some civilian just made a copy of at Kinko's...

1991 I had a PC and AOL service online by the minute I cost me $160 to chat for an hour and a half ouch first and last time but the guy started a fanzine called Paradox I subscribed but lost track of those wish I saved them
gareth walsh It varies quite a bit. Some old gaming mags are only worth a few dollars, while others are worth tens, or even hundreds. Generally older mags are worth more, so if you have issues from 89, those are probably going to be worth more than 91 or 92.
If you want to know how to pronounce Jaleco at the intro to Rival Turf the company name is said on screen. By the way I found a website which archives old video game magazines from around the world. If you want to know the website address feel free to pm me mate.
According to the Jaleco Super NES games of Rival Turf!, Goal!, Brawl Brothers, Tuff E Nuff, Operation Logic Bomb, I couldn't, I didn't know how to pronounce the name of that company, and I've just found out, I think in the review it said, it was either, Jelico, Jaleco, and Jaileco. And it turns out that it's none of the three. It's Jaleco. So learn something new every day, right.
I can't remember which game, but there's a Jaleco game in which a digitized voice says the name of the company during the splash screen. So that's how I finally figured out how it's pronounced. I was 100% saying it wrong until then.
no way! i always pronounced, assumed and heard it as gah lih guh, like you u did growing up. where did you hear it's actually guh la gah? first time you said it i thought 'interesting, never heard it that way'...then it seemed like you were saying it over and over on purpose to drive me crazy!
Funny that on the page where you mention mispronouncing Jaleco you mispronounce Galaga but I can't say that I said it correctly back in the day either.
I subscribed to Nintendo Power from this issue. I remember being kind of pissed that my friends who hadn't subscribed got their free issues of the first issue of Nintendo Power a couple of weeks before I got mine. It would also have been nice if early subscribers could have gotten an extra issue for free. I remember not re-upping more so because I was 13 and felt like Nintendo Power was "for kids".
I thoroughly enjoyed this. It really brings me back to those wonderous days! I love these videos, its a great window into the 90's and seeing the games, hell even the ads really takes me back in time. Awesome job!

Glad I found a video like this on your channel that I haven't already watched ;) Liking the formula!
"Kid looks a little bit douchey just lookin' at him." Savage AF.

Photocopy the crossword puzzle and get after it!
Keep doing these! I actually kept all my old EGMs, and Video Games magazines until a few years ago when my wife tossed them.
This took me back, thanks!
I must own all these classic Fun Club news issues..
Cool I want to start collecting with Sears Christmas wish books

That Official Nintendo Players Guide was bundled with the Nintendo system I had.
The opening tune just makes me want to play ToeJam & Earl :o
Like these videos. Do you happen to have the first issue of Nintendo power or perhaps the last? If so I think a video on those would be awesome.
+Budgie TubeTV Pretty sure I have them both, actually. If I get time to do another "Let's Read", I'll keep this idea in mind. Thanks!
this is an awesome series, you should have more views lol

Final issue of Nintendo Power would be cool. And I have a buttload of Gamepros...
Steve Bell's Nintendo tips:
Legend of Zelda: "collect all the hearts and weapons you can find"
Super Mario Bros.: "go through the pipes in 8-4 in the right order while not losing fire Mario so you can kamikaze Bowser"

Jahmmal Brumfield Yeah, if you buy the Everdrive for the NES, you can use it to play FDS games.
Thanx man! And keep up the good work, the depth u talk about the subjects u cover is very thorough and it takes me back to me back to my youth.
Jahmmal Brumfield Thanks dude, I appreciate the support!

If you want to know how to pronounce Jaleco at the intro to Rival Turf the company name is said on screen. By the way I found a website which archives old video game magazines from around the world. If you want to know the website address feel free to pm me mate.
Is the correct pronunciation Gol-log-ga? I always said Gal-a-ga.
That's how we said it back then, but I think gol-log-ah is correct, based on the fact that in Japanese there are no stressed syllables.
I was 100% saying it wrong until then.
stop saying guh lah ga! love your videos tho!
How do you say it? Growing up, I always said "GA-luh-guh", but apparently the correct pronunciation is "guh-LAH-gah"...
Thanks for watching!
no way! i always pronounced, assumed and heard it as gah lih guh, like you u did growing up. where did you hear it's actually guh la gah? first time you said it i thought 'interesting, never heard it that way'...then it seemed like you were saying it over and over on purpose to drive me crazy!
Definitely not trying to drive anybody nuts. I think I heard it on the Retronauts podcast.
Funny that on the page where you mention mispronouncing Jaleco you mispronounce Galaga but I can't say that I said it correctly back in the day either.
I remember pronouncing Golgo 13 "Golgob" because of its terrible font.
Just photocopy the crossword puzzle
I subscribed to Nintendo Power from this issue. I remember being kind of pissed that my friends who hadn't subscribed got their free issues of the first issue of Nintendo Power a couple of weeks before I got mine. It would also have been nice if early subscribers could have gotten an extra issue for free. I remember not re-upping more so because I was 13 and felt like Nintendo Power was "for kids".
