    All my spring onions in my garden are supermarket bought. I regrow them in a glass of water for 2 weeks like in method 2. And then I put them in the ground. Now I just harvest the leaves when I need it. I have some incredibly huge spring unions that just grew that huge when though they are supermarket bought. Right now I never have to buy spring onions again, because they keep regrowing in my garden.

      were the supermarket ones thin and grew really thick after being planted? or were they a thick species to begin with?

    A good way to avoid rot with the onion method is plant them in something fibrous like cocopeat mixed with some vermiculite.

    I started growing my scallions about a month and a half ago, and I've been planning to harvest my scallions this way, leaving the bottom parts to continue to grow. This is the only video that shows this method. All other videos I've seen show to just harvest the outer leaves, which not only makes the plant look messy and unattractive but doesn't really make sense. Well done. Thank you.

      Glad it was helpful! I am not any professional planter of any sorts :) just a grower at home and this is what I have discovered from my own experience. Something more I have learnt after this video, which is that, if you plant from onion bulbs and if you are careful not to rot your bulbs, keeping it growing continuously you might be able to get more onion bulbs from it. Good luck!!

    I don’t agree with this. I cut spring onions from the store, right down to the white and cut half the roots off. Once propagated and planted, they produced 15 times. Just choose the really thin ones at the supermarket as these are likely to be in first year/babies ;) you’re welcome

      I am doing this for many years, live in an apartment with a large, covered, s/w balcony. Spring onions in 2-3 wider containers, spring onions - though fairly thin - in abundance, whole year round. I use them instead of chives, which I was never able to grow, for whatever reason. I use it almost daily, for bread spreads and salads mainly, but there is always enough to top daily a dish with it.

      Yes of the three i feel 3 is best but it's the longest process. 1 is fast but have to expect some rot of the onion bulbs over time. 2 is too temporary to me is like science project 😅

    @sweechengyap8385 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I think I will try with seeds. What is the soil that you are using for the seed growing method? Thanks for doing the video. I've done #2 a few times and they usually rot rather quickly.

    • @GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday
      @GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes for #2 the white part will rot hence important to keep roots in water only and change water frequent.. it's never a long term growing method anyway just for some regrow experience only. Of all..the three..i will go for #1 on beginner level..and once you are more confident..definitely #3!

    • @GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday

      I used a normal potting mix but you must add gravel or draining materials to increase soil drainage. If soil too wet it will not grow well.

    • @GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday
      @GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      HI! Yes if the roots are able to grow into soil and settle, you can restart the spring onions and continue to use them. The risk is always there during transplant, the spring onion bulbs may rot in soil during transition. So proceed with care :)

      @@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday 1 of the most helpful things I have learned to do, is:
      - cut ALLLL roots- completely off-
      - set in a jar of water- (using a double-cup "method"- helps better than just leaving them in water bc the "stuff" that the stalk gives off- WILL, get into the roots and then- the onions STOP "growing"!

      You can really, just SLOWLY "drip"- some water, into the water you have your cuttings in- you don't "NEED" a spray bottle!
      What this is going to do- is "aerate" your roots- WHILE they're growing.
      They LOVE- love love, THIS!
      Its called "aeration" in English. Not sure what it would be called for your language- but typing that into the "Google translate", with give you a better understanding of "WHY", I suggested this in the first place.

      Very interesting and good question! But sorry I have not tried other onion types. Over here red onions are very commonly used and quite naturally I used red :).
      A very GOOD fact to note about planting onion bulbs is that, if your bulbs does not rot and if you leave the onion leaves to continue growing, the sowed bulb may multiply into more onion bulbs! I have seen success stories of these. I personally have not gone that far. I've always planted for the leaves. haha.

      hi if you are growing from the bulbs and if you snip off the top of the onions before you plant them, they will sprout quicker. It's easier for the sprout to grow than trying to push itself out from a closed bulb. If the conditions are right, in a week you will see sprouts coming out from the onion bulbs.
