Agreed. I'm quietly glad though that they knew the virtue of stopping whilst everybody wanted just a bit more. The writing and cast were brilliant, it would've been a shame to see it milked for every penny long after they'd run out of good ideas.
The best things in life are not in infinite supply. They'd not be appreciated if they were.

I think the best gag is the running 'Simon and Garfunkel' each time they appear there plays a couple of bars from an S & G tune, and the references to S & G songs, briliant comedy

    • @MrDaiseymay

Agreed---i wonder if they had to get clearance from S&G's agents, for the clips of music and piss taking ? Us stars can get touchy, BUT, getting a mench on a worldwide hit series, can't be bad.

My best bit from this was when they were behind the scooter in his car and he turns and says "You strapped in?", like hes gonna floor it and over take but instead after checking they both "strapped in" he checks his mirrors and indicates left and right at about 15mph for 2 minutes before safely over taking in an over taking spot giving plenty of safe room but after they both speak like it was something from a stunt movie lol

Sheila is probably my favourite character, there was such a great scene between her and lance outside the pub where they talk about his daughter leaving and her advice and then silence gave a tiny glimpse into her past and it seemed so sad. Wonderful balance between comedy and tragedy.

Russel describing to Terry the need for the DMDC to get an official club vehicle because it would make the club seem more "professional," all the while scratching his privates. I didn't catch this gross little hysterical detail until my third go-through of the series. Also: "It's not an affectation because I can't actually do it standing up." And, "Why was Lance sitting on a Toadstool. He has piles." (The funny part being that Sophie would somehow know that Lance has piles.) And Lance carring the box marked "Fragile" with the arrow pointing to him. Andy drinking out of the pesticide applicator. The first lemonade scene, where Andy has to open his eye with his fingers. There are just so many.... This it the best thing to come to television, ever.

I stumbled upon this show just by accident on Acorn TV. Just when you think all hope is lost on the small screen then you find a jewel like this. I've watched it 3 times and I see something new every time. Did anybody notice the ritual regarding having a cup of tea? The banter back and forth is always the same. Apparently, if you refuse that means that you are pissed at somebody. I'm also a big fan of Doc Martin. I found this by accident on public TV years ago. Brilliant!

It must KILL some of the detecting reality shows that have popped up over the years, that a piece of detecting FICTION like Detectorists, is FAR more popular than their "reality". That said, I still feel kinda bad that most of those reality show casts have probably been forced by the producers to ramp up the stupidity and sensationalism, in the producers misguided attempts to do what they think they must to grab the most viewers.
Also, the detecting technique shown in Detectorists (say THAT 3 times fast) is better than 95% of what you'll see in ANY sort of media.

HI, the only thing is that it seems so old fashioned, no jerky camera work. It seemed as though some 60 year old was in charge of the filming, I like the quirky modern camera work with the 'swooshing' noises between shots, this gives modern drama excitement! I think it could do with more background music to make the silences in the dialogue not so annoying. The title music is a bit 'folky' and a bit 'twee', maybe a bit of classical music would be more appropriate. Maybe the show needs a bit of violence to spice it up, I've not seen enough sexual innuendo for my liking. Maybe a more picturesque location for the filming perhaps, it needs something as there isn't much going on! I can't see how this is main stream TV, how many people are actually metal detectors anyway? This program just shows what a waste of time metal detecting is for the majority of people. When I was working in a churchyard a couple of weeks ago to fix a gate on a public right of way, the church gardener gave us a load of grief, we couldn't understand why. He was very abusive way beyond what we normally have to endure. When he found out we were from the council to fix the gate he was extremely apologetic. He thought we were metal detectors to dig up the churchyard cemetery as we had arrived with spades etc. Cheers, John.

I was actually joking in my comment above. It has been my favourite TV show for some while and although I made up some things that made it appear I didn't like the show, on reflection they are probably contribute to my love of the series.
      1. To me, great camera work. So many series have 'modern' camera work that I hate.
      2. No annoying over intrusive background music. the only music is the great song performed by Johnny Flynn.
      3. No violence (so far), just isn't needed.
      4. Great characters acted brilliantly.
      5. Some nice scenery.
Great work by Mackenzie Crook, the cast and all who were needed to make the series.
Now I've got to wait for series three!
      Cheers,
      John.
