As an anti-slavery song its text was prohibited by the Portuguese censor. The Portuguese poet David Mourão-Ferreira wrote a new, equally beautiful text, and after the Carnation (whose 48th anniversary is tomorrow) Amália could publish the song.

Must add a comment regarding this wonderful artiste. Discovered her back in the 1960's and have loved he ever since, despite not speaking a word of Portugese. Regret never having the opportunity of seeing her perform live, but fortunately, this material will keep Amalia alive for ever. Her death aged only 79 was tragic and I suspect she was never completely aware of the influence she had and how much loved she was. I still love her and hope the young people of Portugal will discover and appreciate what a treasure they have. RIP Amalia.

I can vividly remember when I visited Lisboa for the first time in 1980 which was around 40 years ago, so as to buy discs (vinyl) for Amalia, and to watch her singing in Fado restaurants in Alfama.
Of course, I had visited Lisboa more times for business purpose and Fado.
Although she passed away and I have been getting old, Amalia and her songs live forever in my memories and remain unchanged.
Because of her, I became to know of Fado and to love Portugal.
