I think you may be interested to hear, perhaps for the first time, the seldom played original version of "Pictures At An Exhibition" as composed by Mussorgsky. You may know the polished and orchestrated version by Ravel. This is as coarse, as rough, as wild as it was composed by Mussorgsky himself. Here it starts at mn 5:00. Followed at mn 18:34 by Glenn Miller's "PA-6-5000".
    Wish you a nice weekend!
    Cheers!

You are right, Mo, as I have never heard the original before. I know that somewhere in my music library I have Ravel's orchestrated version. As you say, this version is coarse and rough, but in my estimation, exactly as Mussorgsky would have wanted it heard. Incidentally, any boy would be proud to start off his musical career in such a band. Thanks, dear Mo.

+Joan Ouellette You are right, my dear Joan. Exactly as Mussorgsky has heard it in his drunken soul. Lots of Vodka may have made him more creative, as were artists in his time, before and after him, I meant creative, that is, and other drinks too!
Also, he had problems with orchestration, and he was technically helped by Rimski-Korsakof to get his "Boris", one of my favourite operas, out to the public. Saw it so many times during my many visits to St. Petersburg!
      To your health, Nazdaroviye!

You are well traveled, dear Mo and I thank you for bringing all these opportunities to see other parts of the world to us, poor souls. For instance, St. Petersberg, a place that has always fascinated me because of its great history. I've never even heard of the opera "Boris," but don't let that surprise you. I've never heard of a lot of things!

+Joan Ouellette Don't be modest! And don't bash yourself! My fault, dear Joan! Mea culpa gravissima est! I should have written "Boris Godunov", instead of "Boris", his most famous opera, based on a piece by Pushkin. I am sure you know it, partially if not totally. Personally I get very high, listening to it, or watching it on stage. A grandiose piece, I should say, if you want my opinion.
You are right, St.Petersburg was the idea of Peter the great, whose ambition was to transform his great empire into a modern, powerful state with a capital as prestigious as the other capitals of the then most prestigious capitals, Paris, London, Vienna, etc...If you have time, you could read, if you have not done already, about his achievements, inclusive his many escapades, by reading the Franco-Russian writer, Henri Troyat, who wrote the bio of Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, and of so many others, bios that read like novels or suspense stories.
And St.Petersburg should stand high on your wishing list, after you have seen all what you want to see!
      Hugs!
      Mo
