Im strictly against straw but I believe it works better than peat moss/topsoil on hill/slopes as far as keeping moisture and see in while not washing it all away
I’m over seeding my lawn I started with a small area 8ft by 60 feet the heat burnt it this summer removed all of the grass it’s been 6 days and I haven’t got any grass coming up using same seed you are the weather is in the fifties at night never used this seed before how long does it take to germinate starting to get worried
Hey Mr. Ferguson, great-great video. quick question. /suggestion regarding your high temperature lawn issue. Did you ever think of pre germinating your seed? Yes i know you are not a fan, i get it but think about it the seed is wet and cool and your 5-10 days into germination. You're applying it with fertilizer, be it Milo, or something else and maybe you'd have greater success because the top portion is cool and thinking logically, the dirt Temperature should be a little bit cooler than what you experienced. Just a thought..
Hey Mr Fergy! So happy that you are getting some good old rain from heaven! Iam in upstate SC and all we have is sort of a misting. I sprayed my weed infested fescue in late July (no premergent cause I thought I could do a successful spring seeding😃) I sprayed the weeds with quinclorac and speedzone...it was obviously too hot to spray and it killed off a lot of my good grass. So,I cut everything low, dethatched, scarified and put down 10# of GCI turf type fescue /1000' ,added my starter fertilizer, sprayed with tenacity and RGS,covered with peat moss and now I am exhausted...hoping for better luck this year...I know I will use premergent this year and also never try to overseed in the spring again. Thanks for all the great advice..I have implemented so much from your great videos. Your lawn is looking good👍
Yesterday I had core aerated and did an over seed @5 lbs per 1k and had a large bare area under an oak tree laid seed at 10lbs per 1k. I haven’t had any real rain for at least 2 weeks some area were hard some weren’t too bad
I'm with you brother. I started one month early this year hopping I could get the two cuts before winter. My baby grass is staying short and not growing like it has past years. We haven't had rain in over a month. My water bill is going to be high. LOL I was just thinking yesterday about putting down more fert. I'm watering twice a day and some days even more in spots that get the sun big time. I even hit it to try and cool the soil down. I'll not do this again like you said and no I didn't do it like this because you did, I did it because I wanted to. Did I tell you I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer? HA! God bless and happy you got some Jesus water!
I did an overseed mid August in southern Pennsylvania and got a lot of sprout and pout. I concluded it was a massive failure but out of nowhere it took off! Keep the faith, brother!
I also seeded my yard at the same time here in Ohio. My backyard is also shaded and is growing in very nicely. The front yard is full sun ( no rain in over a week) and is showing little to no growth. I am watering twice a day now. Seed varies in the germination progression, so I am going to hit my lawn with a root stimulator, liquid aeration and Milo and see what pops in November. If I need to overseed, I will address it in the spring. Patience is key.
Iam having exact same problem same seed u used... I know it's not tje seed but I also have some spots that growth just looks stunted and straggly and other spots long n lush same overseed process I've used before idk what the issue is gonna just keep pushing with N and stay on my water schedule
Great video Mr. Ferguson! Glad your getting the rain send some our way in Archdale lol. Just done my overseeding Tuesday now just the water and waiting game! Have a great weekend!
Problems here up North as well. 2 rain events since Aug 20th less than 1/2 inch. Seeding was done too early temps in 80's. Ughhhh redid some spots last monday 🙏
imo i wouldnt put any fert down when overseeding. The already mature grass will grow faster and start to shade out the grass seed you put down which needs sunlight to germinate. ideally you would cut the mature grass 2 or 3 levels down on the height of cut than what you usually cut at so the new grass has a chance catch up. The soil temp wasn't your problem. You can germinate grass in 100 degrees outside temp if its kept moist enough.
I think your problem was you just didn't keep it moist enough. Trying to keep soil moist without an irrigation system in a yard your size with temps in the 90's is not easy. I can almost guarantee alot of seed dried out. I did my reno almost 2 weeks ago with similar temps but I ran my irrigation for 4-5 mins a zone almost every hr. I've had zero problems with germination anywhere. You mentioned you watered twice a day but with temps that high by the time you got through your whole yard moving a sprinkler around I can guarantee the spots you started at were already dried up
@@Sir_Mack Well yea, and that could be it. Which goes back to wrong time in seeding/high soil temps. If you are watering every hour, that’s definitely a luxury and rare among homeowners. You kept soil temps down by keeping it wet. Most can’t do this, or have the funds to do it if on city water as well.
@@MrFergusonLawnit’s not the soil temps grass seed will germinate faster with warmer soil temps as long as you can water it correctly! I overseed here in NC also at the end of August and had germination at 3 days and new grass 3” long in 7 days. The soil temps everyone mentions 65-70 degrees is the optimal temps from fescue to grow has no effect on seed germination only issue with doing it early is you have to be able to water and your right most folks can’t do that so waiting for cooler weather is a better idea as it doesn’t take near the water to keep the soil good and moist!
Thanks for the update! Good luck with it. Quick question.....my baby grass is coming in and will do first light mow this weekend. With any bare spots and those that haven't filled in yet, do you recommend throwing some more seed or what about a winter seeding right before a heavy snow? I don't know too much of that process and the likelihood of germination in the spring. Thoughts?
@@jasonfournier - Correct, i think the belief is that the snow would push the seed into the ground for germination in the Spring. I may try a little to test, but since i still have a window to overseed, i'm going the traditional route and put some more down this weekend.
