One of the more bizarre, but perhaps more intriguing and realistic Civil Defense films of all time, "Three Reactions to Shelter Life" attempts to highlight the negative psychological reactions that people might experience, living in a fallout shelter following a devastating thermonuclear war. These include aggression, regression, and of course depression. Released in 1964 by the Office of Civil Defense the film highlights the mental suffering likely to occur even when the occupants of a public fallout shelter remain physically safe. Interestingly, Three Reactions to Shelter Life leaves each scenario unsolved, suggesting there can be no easy answers to the problems of human interaction.
The subject of the film, and its content, seem right out of Rod Serling's "Twilight Zone".

Yeah I can see why Charlie got so angry.... when you're confined in an area for your own protection the last thing you want is a reason to prefer to die. When the people are worse than the radiation. Though I guess by now we know for a fact that avoiding radiation poisoning is just living our last days in misery, but gosh this one still feels so real to this day.

Springbok295 There's another civil defense film I saw. It shows a family preparing to go into there family shelter. Dad calmly smoking his pipe while Mom checked off what they had. As the panned along the shelves of supplies you can see a couple cartons of cigarettes. (I presume for Mom.) After two weeks with 4 people, being in an 8×12 space with limited ventilation, two of whom are chain smoking to deal with boredom and stress, maybe fallout wouldn't seem so bad.

Now that we ALL have cameras and instant access to media, we see the cold truth of how bad we really are. All the stories our grandparents would tell us about how nasty things were. When I watch these videos I notice there aren't a lot of black people and when they do show up, they're treated like caged animals or as a background element.... and tragically, we all know how they were really treated back then so we can't pretend everything was clean and orderly for "everyone".

There's also Michael Vale (of Dunkin' Donuts commercials fame) as one of the poker players and again remarking to "Mr. Sweeter" that the radiation is decreasing outside. thoughtprovoking. the importance of being balanced, happy and strong in order to better cope with hardships. and the importance to be balanced to be able to do good to others, too. Some ppl were nice though, and usually ppl aren't psychologically-pedagogically that aware and experienced. Someone stable and warm should take care of shocks, traumas at once for them not to escalate, build up. Kind child. ppl are often egoistic out of thoughtlessness, not evil.

Does remind me of Covid and the 2020 lockdowns. Some of us already spent all day at home so it didn't bother us, but a lot of people (mostly young ones) acted like the mere enforcement of lockdown meant they suddenly had the urge to go out and party and act up (having literal "Covid parties" out of defiance) only to see people die from the disease they helped spread. Yeah it's just ego and ignorance mostly, but there really is something to people taking defiance to a lethal extreme where it kind of becomes borderline evil/malicious. But yeah I do agree I don't think these people are evil as much as reasonably frustrated to irrational levels. No one is deliberately trying to spread radiation or kill/ruin other people's lives.

The fallout shelter in the third segment where Arnold Sweeter snuck out should have the following:
A 45 inch flatscreen TV on the wall next to the shelter door with the message written on it. (Weather, news, entertainment, fallout information)
Dishwashers and sinks and water fountains and toilets and showers and bathtubs that all can recycle water and filter out contaminants.
Robot assistants like Roomba and R2-D2.
Computer for the shelter manager and laptops.
    Charging ports for smartphones.
An air purifier inside the shelter and one just outside the shelter door in a corridor to filter out fallout that may seep in.
A security camera just outside the shelter next to the shelter door with night vision to alert the manager any late arrivals after fallout begins.
A drone outside the shelter to gather radiation status.

Wow, people were tough back in the 50's, this lot took 4 days before some of them started to break down, nowadays some people wouldn't last 1/2 hour after getting over that initial phase that was mentioned, if that long, and I don't mean that as a joke. And only a checker board and a deck of cards for how many people for two or so weeks? How will this current smart phone addicted generation handle no cell service at all? Also, what are they going to do with the smokers or the drinkers, and the like, or even the food addicts, when they can't indulge? I can't see more than one person making it through to the release time, and that's only by killing and eating everyone else.

negative. put them in to submission. the same shelter manager mishandled things from the get go. the woman causing trouble was going to be trouble either way. once she reached her end situation, she needed sedation if possible or just a good attitude adjustment.
