hope this helps with determining what choke tube is in your gun 1 notch full 2 notches improved modified 3 notches modified 4 notches improved cylinder 5 notches cylinder
Nice to see an informative, no-frills video on the “notches.” I recently bought a gun with no other markings on the chokes; and the owners manual did not even mention them. Now I know. Thanks!
Awesome video. I have been shooting my entire life but have never used a shotgun. I've used mostly handguns and some rifles. With all of those years of shooting experience everyone assumes I know it all. I was military police and am a retired Detective. It wan't until watching your video that I understood the differences in "gauge" and what a "choke" actually was. I easily could have damaged a weapon or injured myself or someone else by just buying a shotgun and shooting it without knowing about the chokes, etc.. There may be many more people in my same situation. Thank you very much for a detailed, thorough and informative video. Great job all around. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you i think you may have saved my shotgun i had a 3 notch tube installed from the manufacturer luckily i hadn't shot it now i put the 4 notch tube in so thanks again.
Thanks for the info. I just purchased a used Tristar Over Under. Came with two external choke tubes. I know nothing about these. After watching your video I now know it has an improved modified and a modified choke. I plan to occasionaly shoot clays. I friend has suitable property and a thrower. I hope that these will serve my purpose as I have learned the expense of purchasing new chokes. Guns seems to be in good condition and I paid just under $500 for it.
I myself never cleaned my choke and it got so stuck I rounded the wrench markings off. Ended up selling it with a choke that'll never come out. I make sure I clean it now in my new 11-87! can't wait for duckshooting.
Thanks for the video. I have a quick question. Can you damage a gun buy shooting the wrong choke with a shot size? For example I have a EXT. Full choke and 3 in mag. Turkey loads 2 oz 4 shot. And can I shoot buck shot and rifled slugs with this choke too? Thanks
What is the tightest choke you can shoot a slug out of? I want to have have an in case surf shotgun with the versatility to shoot slugs, buckshot, and birdshot. So anything will help, thanks.
can you tell me about the size of the extended tubes, of .655, .660. .665 and .670? I know that it has something to do with the tightness of the pattern, I shoot a remi 870 express magnum 3 to 3-1/2" hevi shot, for geese and turkey and does it really matter?? thanks, Gene...
Thank you very much for making this, very helpful! I am new to shotguns. Just recently purchased a Remington 870 pump to get on my feet so to speak because I would like to get into trap. I would like to get something built for it, "over unders" I believe they call them?(correct me if I am wrong) But any recommendations and about how much should I be looking at spending(roughly)?? Thanks again!
once a barrel has been modified to accept a choke ( my tactical Remington was), then I must always have a choke in there or I'll F-up the threads. Right?
I'm using a Kel-Tec KSG, I purchased A choke tube adapter for it made of steel; can I use this without a choke? I'm asking because I'm under the impression that it (chokes) will negatively effect the #1 buckshot from federal premium with flitecontrol.
1yankeecowboy I think I may have seen the confusion with my question. The choke tube adapter is an additional 2" steel piece that gets added to the end of the stock barrel.
To be honest you answered your own question 😂 I don’t think it would hurt because the hull pedals are plastic and the shot sits in the hull but why would you want to? Emergency absolutely
No, you want to have a choke in at all time whether shooting shots or slug, however for slug shooting use a more open choke such as improved cylinder or cylinder.
bobinmissouri only if the slugs you are shooting say you can if not use a improved cylinder. I mold foster slugs which I can shoot out of a full choke.
NEVER shoot your shotguns without a choke in it unless it's a fixed or a slug barrel. The shot will destroy the threads where you screw in your chokes and you won't be able to put another choke in that barrel. For slugs, look into buying a slug barrel or a slug choke.
Question...what will happen if you shoot a shotgun with no choke on it? Is it recommended? What will happen if you shoot a slug out with no choke? New Shotgunner here...
Gotta love keyboard badasses. Guy gets ink and all of a sudden that makes him a dope head smh. And aerosmithwanabe, yeah alcohol is a drug. So is caffeine. Theyre both legal tho. It doesnt take an idiot to figure out that hes referring to illicit drugs like what is implied in the tattoo comment. Last i checked they dont call alcohol dope. Anyways great video man exactly what i was looking for.
Not what I was looking for. I will continue to search for a video that explains what a choke tube is for. I'm looking at purchasing a Mossberg or a Remington 12 gauge for home defense. The remmy has threads for a choke tube while the mossy does not, and i'm trying to find out what the hell they are for. Thanks for the vid anyway.
Choke tubes are used to control the patterning of pellets fired at certain yardages, if you are just buying a shotgun for home defense you most likely won't need a choke tube but if you are going to be hunting with it as well I'd suggest you purchase the remington since it has the ability to accept a choke tube and will be more flexible to your needs
I prefer the Mossberg cylinder bore, 18.5 inch barrel for home defense. Since there is no choke tube, you never have to worry about what type of shot,, steel or lead,, etc. When I want to hunt, I simply change out the barrels to a 28" that accepts the Mossberg Accu-choke tubes. And remember,, never, ever,,, fire a slug through a barrel with a choke installed. To see what each type of choke does,,, at what ranges,, do a Google Image search for "choke tubes",, and there are many charts to help out. A smooth cylinder bore,, for home defense,, max's out at about 25 yards with a 40" wide shot string (the amount of spread for all the shot).
Karl Smink its ok to fire slugs through a choke, I have a benelli nova and rifled slugs shoot just fine out of it with a modified choke, I just wouldn't recommend full or extra full chokes if you're using rifled slugs, as for sabot slugs I wouldn't use a smoothbore at all you won't get stabilization needed and the slug could keyhole so I would recommend investing in a rifled barrel if you wish to shoot sabot slugs in the future
Notches and names don't mean a damn thing really. If you've patterned or mic'd anything Browning you would understand. Chokes should be labeled by constriction. Benelli, Beretta, Browning, Remington, not one MOD choke matches the constriction of another manufacturer.
OUTSTANDING VIDEO.!!
THIS GUY NAILED IT.!!
THE INFORMATION IS THIS VIDEO IS ON POINT...
Thank you!
Best educational video I have ever seen on youtube. You explain things well.

Great explanation. New to dealing with chokes, so your video was very helpful
Greatnjob. Greatly appreciated. Useful when all you have on your tubes are notches

Go with improved modified for trap shooting. I use that or full choke
Great video mate explained in layman's terms made it so easy to understand thumbs up 👍👍👍
Dean Wicks thanks for watching!
Excellent video!!! Thanks buddy!!!
Thanks for this video, I just bought my first shotgun, helped me figuring out which choke is which, because they didn't have writings on them.
Glad I could help
just got into shooting, i enjoyed the lesson. Good job

Enjoyed your vid. Thank you, Question, can i shoot riffled slugs through a MOD choke?
Bought my first shotgun with a choke this year. Thanks.

@MyHollowpoint cool hope this video helps you out will do a video on wich to use for wich application

Thank you so much
@23mrcowboys how do you like the ruger red label?
Cool! i never noticed that! Nice vid!
Thanks!
My carlson's extended ported choke tube threaded for invector plus always loosens up after a round of trap.
mine does every time
Thanks bro i hope to be doing a live show once a week to answer questions or do small things like you just asked
Thanks for watching
I use a quarter to change my choke tubes works fine never owned a tube wrench of any kind. Remington 870
hey whatever works right.
My 870 came with the tool
I've used a quarter too. I also found that the brass end of a shell will work.
I have a 38" smooth bore barrel do I or what choke should I use for slugs
Thank you.
Thank You
@TheJeffrozz glad I could help
once a barrel has been modified to accept a choke ( my tactical Remington was), then I must always have a choke in there or I'll F-up the threads. Right?
Ed Weibe yes sir will eventually screw it up
I use my pointer finger to tighten them you dont need a wrench
might U show the installation ? thanks
Thanks
Thanks buddy
@mba2ceo will do soon
I got a used shotgun and it has a choke but i don't see any notches in it.
What would you prefer to use on the benelli for water fowl?
Fryingduck#15 I would use modified because I'm proficient with that choke
would improved cylinder work for slugs? or is that to small? and full or bird shot? are those good?
spike wanner yes that would be good again depend on the slug.some will go through a full come just find some can be dangerous do to high pressure.
well they are 3 inch Winchester super x
I'm using a Kel-Tec KSG, I purchased A choke tube adapter for it made of steel; can I use this without a choke? I'm asking because I'm under the impression that it (chokes) will negatively effect the #1 buckshot from federal premium with flitecontrol.
if the gun has choke in it I would not use it without a choke in it.
1yankeecowboy in the choke tube adapter? Will a cylinder choke be a neutral selection? I guess my answer will be me getting out to the range.
InkwellFoto cylinder is a very open pattern
1yankeecowboy I think I may have seen the confusion with my question. The choke tube adapter is an additional 2" steel piece that gets added to the end of the stock barrel.
@johndoe3307 never saw one without a notch could be extra full let me know what you find out
Cylinder ?
FYI my Remington VersaMax chokes are the reverse with 6 notches for full. Just learn the notch number for your brand.
thx mark r Scranton pa
Can u tell us what marks are for what kind of shot like full choke 00 buck shot 1 or 2 marks 🤔 pls
Shot doesn’t really dictate the choke but typically if your going buck I’d open up the choke to improved cylinder at least.
@@yankeecowboy thank u im new in to shotguns this video helps thank u
Dumb question is it okay to shoot my Barretta A303 without a choke threaded in ???
To be honest you answered your own question 😂 I don’t think it would hurt because the hull pedals are plastic and the shot sits in the hull but why would you want to? Emergency absolutely
I was told to remove the choke before shooting a slug I have the pardner 12 pump yes or no
No, you want to have a choke in at all time whether shooting shots or slug, however for slug shooting use a more open choke such as improved cylinder or cylinder.
@@alexyu6928 can i shoot a Sabot slug tru a Mod Choke
what kind of choke should I use for shooting 3 inch slugs? And what should I use for shooting Winchester superx 3 inch 4 shot?
spike wanner personally I would go with full
1yankeecowboy i have a 870 express with a full choke i can't get out can i shoot slugs thro it?
bobinmissouri only if the slugs you are shooting say you can if not use a improved cylinder. I mold foster slugs which I can shoot out of a full choke.
so the less notches, the tighter the pattern further out? I presume (not assume) YES
Ed Weibe correct
So my Maverick 88 should have 5 notches if it's cylinder?
No skeet has five after that cylinder has no notches
@@yankeecowboy thank you
mine has no notches
Thanx . I bought a CZ and lost the book, I kinda thought what the notches mean .but did not want to look like a complete idiot . Thanx again.
Your welcome
have a 20 gauge with a modified choke can I shoot slugs through it
Billie Hayter I wouldn't say yes but wouldn't say no
@@yankeecowboy can i shot sabot slugs tru a Mod Choke
What about a skeet choke where does that lye

Which notch best for pheasant?
I shoot full choke, one notch
@SoulSurvivorX2 thanks that's some funny chit :)
@23mrcowboys You talking about Eric? Why hasn't he showed it? :)
cool bananas👍

for both?
spike wanner depends on what slugs and definitely full for 4shot
No notches ?
Extra full
Question...what will happen if you shoot a shotgun with no choke on it? Is it recommended? What will happen if you shoot a slug out with no choke? New Shotgunner here...
After time you would ruin the threads for your choke.
So,..it's recommended you use a choke of some kind when shooting, at all times?
Yes if it comes with a choke you should have one in at all times.
Thank you Brother
