    So many takeaways from this Pichon Lalande video! It’s incredibly comprehensive, packed with insights and information about this very important and widely revered producer. This particular content resonates with me, having had the pleasure of tasting the stellar 2018, 2010, and 2004 plus the Second Wine which was excellent as well. I’m glad you mentioned the higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in their newer vintages - I also noted it with delight during my tasting and writing of review. The 2004 has 53%, the 2010 has 66%, and the 2018 has 71% no less! The 2018 was, indeed, No.2 in Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2021, and if I were to make a list of my best wines tasted in 2023, this would surely be in the Top 5. In this regard, I do have to thank you for inspiring my wine choices and wine destinations. Thank you also for the wine-collecting tips and recommendations, and for sharing the news about their upcoming (?) white wine. Congratulations on this outstanding video! Santé, John!

      Couldn't agree more, margauxml! Well said. Both Pichon properties are favorites of mine, not only because I stayed for a week at the Pichon Baron chateau in 2013. For 2022, the reviews for the second wines at both Baron and Comtesse (Comtesse Reserve and Baron's Les Griffons) are 94+ en primeur and futures can be had for under $50. I have ordered six of each as cellar defenders. Thanks for the strategy, John! Is there another video on Baron in the works?

    I too regard the 1982 Pichon Lalande as one of the best Bordeaux ever. I was fortunate to have tasted the 1982 many times in its youth and it remains the best young Bordeaux in my experience. I currently have the 2016, 2018 and 2019 in my cellar. I hope I will live long enough to enjoy them at their peaks.

    I did buy a case for 170$ each of the 2019 vintage, this is incredible value. My next case purchases will be the 2018 Ducru-Beaucaillou and the 2018 smith haut lafitte. I loved this video on pichon lalande. You should do a video on smith haut lafitte. It has gotten several 98 and 99 scores and only sells for about 110-140$. This is a underated wine that will double in price soon if it keeps up delivering on the incredible quality it has delivered the last 5 years. Keep ut the great content 😊

    Another awesome video John!! I never had the opportunity to try the 82. I bought some of the Pichon Lalande 89 and 90 back in the days... But as with most of my wine purchases back then, I didn't know what a bargain they were at the time! Why didn't I buy a case!!!!! I remember the guy at the wine store had to convince me to buy the 89 Pichon Baron.. mentioning the wine spectator wine of the Year.... I hesitantly bought three at $45 each. Ugh.
    Love your videos!!

    The 1996 is drinking so well right now. It does take a little time in the decanter for the nose to express itself but it explodes after a few hours in the decanter. Recently tasted it next to 1995 Latour, 95 Mouton, and 95 ducru. The 96 pichon was wine of the night. I’ve tasted it 3 times over the last 2 years and it impressed each time.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you. Agreed! The 96 was included in the vertical tasing I did in November and it was one of my favorites too. Some people found the pyrazines a bit too prominent in that one, but they don't bother me at all.

    Thanks again for another great video! Since the first growths are out of reach, the super-second growths are a great special occasion wine to have on hand so I appreciate your input even though I don't buy them that often. I was lucky enough to purchase a few bottles of the 1989 vintage at a great price. What are your thoughts on that vintage?

  • @noahcap

    Thanks for the great video. Unfortunately, one of my biggest wine disappointments was a Pichon Lalande. I went way above my usual price point to splurge on a 1982, bought from a reputable dealer in perfect condition, but the wine was thin, acidic, drinkable, but barely. I heard that there were two different bottlings, one better then other, something about free run juice inclusion vs not? Not sure if that's true. Any advice on picking out a bottle in good shape? Keep up the great work!

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very sorry to hear that. There is definitely some bottle variation. A lot of that depends on how it was stored. Ex-chateau bottles still show well, but I have had a few that were disappointing. At this time, I would try to get ex-chateau bottles if at all possible. HDH has some I believe.

      No worries at all! Viewers catch up on the library at all different times.
      Great question! In my view, the 2020 Pichon Lalande is phenomenal! It is going to be an incredible wine with another 15-20 years of bottle age. For the past 7-8 years, Pichon Lalande wines are performing at the level of a First Growth, but for a fraction of the cost.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@injashiran Yes, exactly right. And if anything, Palmer wines often cost more than Pichon Lalande at this time. I think Pichon Lalande will get to that level before too much longer.

    I want to buy a bottle but i really doubt between the 2018 en 2020…. I think that the 2018 is more like a napa cab (very ripe) and the 2020 a little more classic… what do you think?

    But let me ask one question: a friend of mine claims that the 1982 is very good, but the 2019 is even better: what do you think? Maybe the 2019 just needs more time.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Maybe. The 2019 did get a perfect score. And it is a tremendous wine. It could very well exceed the 1982 with another 20 years of age.

    My friend, I love your videos, and I’m on the newer side to your channel, but I’ve been gobbling up your content real good. I should contribute somehow, but in the meantime, can you tell me how you account, in your recommendations to others, for wines, (especially Bordeaux of some magnitude) shutting down, after say, year, 4, 5 or six? Have you found any consistency in when wines especially from France tend to go to sleep for a while? It is so unbelievably frustrating to open up like a 96 point 2018 Bordeaux for your friends that you’ve just group funded and spent $120 on, only to find that it is healthy, but absolutely unyielding. Know what I mean?

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! Appreciate the support! I did this video early on that may be useful. Please excuse the editing as I was a beginner.
      I try to give guidance on drinking windows when discussing wines in my videos. But in general I don’t drink top Bordeaux until 10 plus years later. Top CDP can show well on release, then shuts down from 3-7 or 8. Burgundy can be enjoyable young but gains complexity later.
