- Donald Trump has made inflation a central part of his campaign message. At his rallies, he rails against “the Biden inflation tax” and “crooked Joe’s inflation nightmare,” and promises that in a second Trump term, “inflation will be in full retreat.”
But if you look at Trump’s actual policies, that wouldn’t be the case at all. Trump has a bold, ambitious agenda to make prices much, much higher. He’s proposing a 10 percent tariff on imported goods, and a 60 percent tariff on products from China. He wants to deport huge numbers of immigrants. And he’s made it clear that he’d like to replace the Federal Reserve chair with someone more willing to take orders from him. It’s almost unimaginable to me that you would run on this agenda at a time when Americans are so mad about high prices. But I don’t think people really know that’s what Trump is vowing to do.
So to drill into the weeds of Trump’s plans, I decided to call up an old friend. Matt Yglesias is a Bloomberg Opinion columnist and the author of the Slow Boring (www.slowboring...) newsletter, where he’s been writing a lot about Trump’s proposals. We also used to host a policy podcast together, “The Weeds.”
In this conversation, we discuss what would happen to the economy, especially in terms of inflation, if Trump actually did what he says he wants to do; what we can learn from how Trump managed the economy in his first term; and why more people aren’t sounding the alarm.

I am a dairy farmer and i can assure you the vast majority pf our manual laborers that milk the cows 3 times a day 365 days per year are qlmost all undocumented. Because we need labor 24/7/364 and the ag worker visa are only seasonal and capped way to low. These workers are by and large awesome and they pay into taxs Social security and madicare etc and never benefit from it since they have no path to becoming a citizen. They also do most of the building and landscaping and much much more. Americans around us almost all go on disability and work under the table part time instead of doing manual labor. Americans wont do this work, a few farms tried and paid $25 an hour and still they all quit within weeks cuz they can make as much on disability. Everyone around here has a bad back. Lol
You're failing to consider what would happen if illegals were unavailable. Either milk prices would rise to meet the pay needs of American dairy workers or milk would be imported--or some combination. That would require enormous milk imports, and the logistics would be expensive.
By the way, disability pay is a function of prior taxes paid in. You won't get much if you start collected at 25.

I get frustrated about the [Lord Dampnut] "economic miracle", because for years Obama and liberal economists said the recovery was too slow, and larger deficits were justified, and the Republican Congress and Tea Party insisted that government spending was too high, and deficits would cause inflation and collapse of the dollar. So for years Obama was hamstrung by the need for fiscal balance, and in fact debt as % GDP was largely balanced over the majority of his term. The deficit and the growth in debt was offset by grudgingly slow growth in the economy.
[Lord Dampnut] comes into office, and immediately the purse strings open and the deficit blows out. Taxes are cut, and very little effort is made towards cutting spending. And indeed economic growth and wealth creation picks up. What would have happened if we had done more of that in 2010 and 2011 like Obama wanted? It's not like Obama wanted to spend less and fight the deficit. These were compromises forced on him by the divided government. And Obama was right. And yet all we hear about is how [Lord Dampnut] was right. Well, who was wrong exactly? If 2017 Congress was right to favor expansionary policy, why aren't we calling out the 2011 Congress for being wrong? They were mostly the same stupid hypocrites.

Political science 101: democracy is capitalism, we see numerous examples of capitalism-like societies without democracy they either end in disaster or transition to democracy or wait for disaster to happen, democracy without capitalism means an even quicker unpleasant end, e.g. Gorbachev finished off the USSR in 3 short years of democratization.

Within 50 years income taxes reached 90% until Reagan cut taxes in the 1980s
