In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, NPR Music presents four very special Tiny Desk Home Concerts recorded especially for this week.

Vocalist Carlos Vives kicks things off in high gear on this Tiny Desk (home) concert with his trademark sound: a celebration of the music from his beloved home country of Colombia, mixed with rock and other Latin music style.
Spirited champeta dance grooves from the country’s Pacific coast permeate his classic 1995 hit “Pa’ Mayte,” and if you look closely you’ll see two of his backup vocalists also playing traditional gaitas Colombianas (flutes). They are used to spectacular effect as a transition between the title cut of his new album Colombiana and “La Bicicleta” (originally recorded with his compatriot Shakira), a vallenato fueled by a bit of reggaeton.
Presenting Carlos Vives has special resonance this week as his latest album recently picked up six Latin Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year.

Mayte Montero (the lady playing the Gaita) is an absolute legend, the first song they play “Pa' Mayté” it’s actually named after her and is probably his most famous song.

Carlos Vives' performance was *the best* of the Hispanic Tiny Desk series. And *easily* one of the best Tiny Desk performances ever.
I was in Colombia when El Rock de Mi Pueblo had recently been released. It was my first international trip and that album and his music are inextricably linked to a time that changed me forever. I can’t tell you how excited I was to see him pop up in my notifications and how unbelievably joyful this makes me feel. Thank you, thank you.

Guillermo vadala al bajo, quizás uno de los bajistas más maravillosos que dió la musica en español.
@@sebastianvargas420 tiene de los mejores bajos que para mí se tocaron en el rock nacional en las colaboraciones que tiene con Fito Paez (el que llegó hasta acá escuché cacería, cadáver exquisito, entre Miles de otros) toco con la negra sosa, león Gieco, leo sujatovich, Julieta Venegas etc. Y cada línea de bajo que tira es magia, inclusive en este Tiny desk dónde la rompe toda!
Camina increiblemente y lo llena con un gusto excepcional, grandísimo bajista.

In the late 1990's I dated a Columbian named Ivan while living in Chicago and he gave me one of Carlos Vives' CDs - I loved it. So awesome to finally 'see' who I was listening to. Also, I heard about these parties on the mountains.... thanks Carlos and band for the groove!

Songs like Cumbiana, Ella Es mi Fiesta, La Tierra del Olvido, and many more show the beauty of our country. His music is beauty, colors, culture, love, passion and all the emotions you could possibly put in a song or in an album. I promise he will never disappoint you.

Soy colombiano, y una vez completando mi carrera de ingenieria civil (por alla en 2010) fui con un grupo de ingenieros a medir vibraciones durante conciertos en un Arena en Cali, Colombia, donde se presentó coincidencialmente este gran cantante, Carlos Vives. Y realmente hasta el dia de hoy no he vuelto a ver un cantante con tanta energía en el escenario, creo que se refleja en el Tiny Desk.

He played a big part of his carreer with Argentinian singer/songwriter rock legend Fito Páez, and yes, he did made a difference in his albums, you can hear his pressence in Páez songs, I'd recommend "La casa desaparecida" from the '99 album "Abre Páez".
Man's got so much surplus focus, it's insane. It's like he envelops the whole thing. I'm finding myself just watching him, even though everyone is so great.
Guillermo Vadalá is a legendary bassist. As somebody told you, you should listen to his contributions in Fito Páez discography (since the latest years of the 80’s to the first decade of the new millennium). He’s married to another legendary bassist: Nerina Nicotra, who accompanied Luis Alberto Spinetta in his latest works. They together have a musical academy en Miami.
I am so happy Carlos Vives finally got big, he tries to be so unique, original, genuine , keeping the Colombia's traditional rhythms and folklore . Que viva Colombia! uepa!
