I rode many an hour on a WD-45 and when it wore completely out the dealer had a kit to power it up to D-17 power. I rode a lot of hours on it and a series 1 D-17. All snap couplers, the 45 could handle a 13 foot disc after the repower but it would not run 6 hours on a tank of gas, you had to take a 5 gallon can to set at the end of the field and about 1/2 way through the morning stop and put in in the tank. The 17 would run 6 hours on a tank of gas and still make it home pulling a four bottom plow or the disc. Loved those tractors, left the farm in 1964 haven't driven a tractor since.

Allis Chalmers are great tractors. I have a 1957 D-14 that I use nearly daily. My son and his father-in-law farm with a 190, 7000 and 8030 on their beef operation. Keeps my son busy working on them but he loves the orange units.

I can't figure out why the D21 never took off it was only $5,700 in (1964 ). At 103 horse power it was bigger and much less expensive than a John Deere 4020 which was less than 90 horsepower and about $8,000 in 1964.

D21’s are just tough looking. What a tractor should look like. All the companies had distinctive looking tractors back then, now they all look the same. Sad.

I really just can't get over the operat station on a wd 45 like what were thinking if you are over 5'5" tall you legitimately can not operate properly. It's really crazy how guy(especially my height at 6'4") has to sit in order to get the hand clutch to fully engage and then you can't have you left leg/foot no where near close to the brakes so there no way you can hit them in an emergency. Then you think your clutch leg will be better since there's no hand clutch in the left side ha just kidding you knee will be a foot into the steering wheel! My neighbor farmed his whole life and when he took it over he completely farmed with just Allis Chalmers and had 4 wds and they were his loader tractors and how that man use to sit on them would blow my mind both his feet would be basically behind him and behind the rear end with his feet on the back of the rear end just sitting there and he still drove them till he passed away. It was no wonder why his body especially his back was so screwed up using those style machines for years before the d series came out and then then the 190s. And the crappy thing is those wds were extremely reliable tractors with great power and easy to add hydraulics and anything a guy needed. And even now they are super cheap and a great tractor to work on. Hell I would own well over ten of them if you didn't have to spend a fortune on a good seat and hours trying to fabricate something bso you could properly run it and not destroy you back.
