    Love the channel, but I just don't get why EVERYONE on youtube keeps saying that the 1200 is only good for 2 people. You can fit 6-8 burgers or a full filet, or a couple racks of ribs, etc. on the 1200. I think the 1200 is perfect for a family of 4

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Guilty! You're right the 1200 can feed four. But I think the real estate does fill up in a hurry depending on what you put on it. For something a bit more dense like burgers, yeah you can pile on quite a few of them in one batch to feed a family. Thanks for making your way through the channel :-)

    I've had my weber q120 OG for 10+ years and have had zero issues with it. Camping, tailgating, home, beach, wherever. It's been a great grill. I have upgraded to the q1200 split grates with a griddle.

    Great review! I went with the Weber q1200 as it’s just myself and my daughter, however on the occasions I want to host a bbq for friends or family, I’ll pull out my black stone adventure griddle, as well as my q12 and that’s more than adequate for us!

    • @ChicagoGriller

      Thanks for watching Tina! I agree, the Q1200 is perfect for two people and it's my preferred grill when it's just me and my fiance at home. The Black Stone adventure griddle looks like a fun piece of kit. I've seen that and the tabletop version at tailgates here before sports events.

    Thank you so much for this great comparison video, Chicago Griller! I was on Amazon reading reviews on both the Q1200 and the Q2200 and both sounds like they're loved by the people who purchased them. But I was having a hard time choosing between the two since I can't see them in person side by side. Your video helped me make a decision and I went ahead and ordered the Q2200. I pulled out the tape measure after I saw you measuring both grills and it really helped put the sizes in perspective when you placed the Q1200 grill grates on top of the Q2200 grates. What a smart thing to do. You really know how to illustrate what's important and what the differences are between the two products. Thanks again, this helped me tremendously!

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Johnny! Thanks for watching. Yes the size difference is noticeable when side to side and when stacked. For me, there's only two people in my household so in reality, the Q1200 would have been great for me, but I do like the bigger size of my Q2200 series for the odd ball larger roasts or any time I want to prepare larger portions. Either way you can't go wrong, but you are going to be thrilled with your new Q2200.

    I just purchased the q1200. I want lighter weight and portability for camping. If it’s not big enough I will purchase the 2200 to supplement. I only need a larger grill when kids go camping

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't go wrong with either! That said the 2200 is significantly heavier and I think would not be practical for longer trips, or if you plan on taking it out to far remote locations that requires carrying or pulling it a longer distance.

  • @davidsimpson4000
    @davidsimpson4000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I find with my 1200 using the trivet have trouble getting up to full temp to start roasting but happily sits at around 200cel
    Also how do you get on with wind in Chicago while cooking , a breeze hear sends cooking times out the window,

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you using the Weber roasting rack, or are you using foil? I use foil and have found if you poke more holes (or larger holes), you can get higher temperatures.
      The wind is definitely a challenge. Fortunately my front deck has brick walls, so I have my Weber Q out there below the brick so it gets shielded by most of the elements.

  • @crashjump1849
    @crashjump1849 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the Weber Q 120 and I used it alot when I worked in Tucson Arizona . I normally prefer grilling with charcoal but in Tucson it was really hard trying to light charcoal because of the altitude.... After 20 minutes of trying I had to bust out with the propane torch to get it started. Using the Weber Q is so much easier. I cooked everything from steaks to tater tots and pizza the only downside is that I noticed the burner seem to be a little weak I guess it's because of the altitude.

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Crash Jump. I would not have thought altitude had such an effect on lighting charcoal or grill temperatures (although makes total sense). Very interesting and helpful insight. Thanks for watching!

      The whole series of grills are really well thought out. I use my Q1200 and Q2000/2200 pretty much interchangeably. The cooking times on both are more or less identical and which one I use usually comes down to how much I am serving that day.

      Glad it was helpful! Yes, while these grills are marketed as portable, the shape and weight make them a bit difficult and a bit of a hassle to pack and carry out regularly. The performance however cannot be argued with so perhaps weigh your grilling wants/needs vs true portability.

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sergio - there are 3 main differences between the Q2000 and Q2200, and you can do all three if you are handy: 1) install a lid thermometer. 2) replace the lid with the higher domed lid and 3) replace the ignition with a battery powered ignition. That said, #1 is the most important, and probably the only upgrade worth doing if you didn't buy the Q2200 to begin with. A new lid and new ignition system to install is not worth buying unless you have to replace them as part of long term maintenance. Thanks for checking out the channel!

    What do you think about the new Weber Traveler? Looks like it has about the same output as the Q 2200, slightly larger cooking area.

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is a very interesting looking product. I'm curious to see one in store when they become available, but it looks to essentially be a slightly larger Q2200, and I am assuming what should be a sturdier, but built in cart (the Weber Q portable cart is too flimsy, in my opinion). The thing I am curious about with the new Traveler, is what you can fit under the lid though. The nice thing about the domed Q lid is you can fit some pretty big stuff under there for roasts like whole chicken or duck or pork shoulder. I'm not sure you'd be able to do that with the Traveler.

    • @pioneer7777777
      @pioneer7777777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChicagoGriller I put in an order for one. Planning on using it as my primary gas grill. Also bought a Summit Kamado E6 to do charcoal cooking. Currently use a Kettle so I figure I will just use the Traveler for smaller, quicker cooks and any large, low and slow will be done by the Kamado. Figure on my small deck a full size Genesis would take up a lot of room, plus there are only two meat eaters in our house as my wife is vegetarian. Also I like the idea that it's portable. Never have had a portable grill before, so maybe that will be a worthwhile purpose for it as well. Edit: Thought more about it and got cold feet. I think I may hold out and get a larger grill down the line. Potentially a Genesis 335. Better to save my money I think and get the larger grill later.

    Can you use 2 zone cooking on either?

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's difficult since these grills only have one burner. The only safe way you could do it is potentially cover one half of the grates with foil, and then lay a small baking rack on top of it. This would allow you to have half the grill exposed to the flames but leaving the other side as a cool zone (since the foil would block the direct heat).

    Do you get a smoky flavor from the lid being closed without using a smoke pack or is the smoke pack necessary? Thanks

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you will get a very small natural amount of smoke, just from grease and fat dripping/rendering onto the flames and back up into the dome/lid. However, it's not really that pronounced. If you want much more robust smokiness you're going to need to use wood chips in a pouch. Thanks for watching!

      This is a good griller hack to check for even temperatures across the grill. Definitely worth a video in the future. In my experience I have a cool spot in the upper right of the Q1200, but it is pretty even on my Q2000.

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A small 1-lb bottle lasts between 3-4 hours on the Q1200 (it lasts about 2-3 on the Q2200). I find if you do rely on those small bottles, always keep a spare in case it runs out mid-cook.

      You're welcome. I agree, unless you are going with a larger group and cooking for everyone, the 1200 is the way to go. The 2200 is pretty heavy with grates and even if you have the wheely cart is not the easiest thing to lug around. That said, both are great cookers. Happy camping and happy grilling!

    I have a really old (20 year old ) 1200 Worked great for many years and many great apartment get togethers. Needs new grate and burner and giving to a co worker, Was wondering about up grading to 2200, but I dont know, not a huge difference. But I really liked the grill grate comparison, spot on for that for sure! Great vid and........a one, a two, a three, take me out to the ballgame shout out to our man Harry, (chest bump peace sign to Heaven for that man!!)

    I have a Weber Q100 and a Weber Q200. I have installed thermometers and wish I had the deeper Q1200. Is there a deeper lid Q20X model as well, or is it standard size for both the Q2000 and Q2200?

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe the lid on the 2200 is slightly higher domed than the 2000 series (and likewise the 1200 is supposedly slightly taller than the 1000) but I am not sure if that makes that big of a difference in practice. For example, I modified my Q2000 with a thermometer, but to date it has not affected or impacted what I cook inside of it.

    Someone mentioned that I need clips to use a split grill/griddle with my older single piece Weber Q? Is that right?

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  ปีที่แล้ว

      I cannot confirm but I believe I have heard this as well from other comments saying the split grates don’t work on the older Q100/120 or 200/220.

  • @georgecurtis6463
    @georgecurtis6463 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a long time q2200 owner, I mean long time, I find it a perfect size. But saying that, I have been wanting a q1200 or baby q for also a long time. But I'm a tight head so havnt gotten one yet. Please, stop calling yours a 2200 model. It does not have the higher lid. A thermometer does not change what it is. I personally feel that if you can afford one, get the q2200. It's not that much heavier and removing the grates makes it so much easier.

    Good video. The one thing i feel like everyone is missing in reviewing these portable grills is packed diemensions (side tables in ready for transport) after all the main reason many are shopping for a weber q is as a portable grill. Everywhere i look even webers web site only list diemensions with the side tables out. Also square inches and tape measure measurements of the cooking area are nice but what i think would be better is load each one up with burgers so people can see the difference in cooking space in a way that they can picture. Thanks mike

    how do they handle flare ups? in past experience with gas grills, use to have some flare ups.

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ken, the Weber Q is prone to flare ups with fattier items or items with oily/buttery marinades. This is because the burner tubes are largely exposed. Those burn off quickly but you have to make sure you keep your cook box reasonably clean of grease... but this is true of probably any gas grill. I grill about 2-3x weekly, and I find if I do a quick clean and wipe down of the grease in the cook box and replace what's in the drip pan about monthly, I am good to go.
      Knock on wood, I've not had any grease fires yet.

    I bought a Q3200 purely for cooking at home the other day after extensive researching on the internet and video. I do not regret my purchase. It’s so good I’m thinking of getting a Q1200, don’t need it for home use but how good would it be to take it with you on day outings and cook bbq food.

    • @ChicagoGriller

      Hi Dennis! The funny thing is one of my other neighbors also has a Q3200 so I may have to do a comparison. After using the Q1200, the portability of it is amazing. If you are just cooking for 2-4 people, the Q1200 is probably perfect if you're not doing anything crazy. If you're doing a larger tailgate or camp, then the Q2200 is probably the way to go. I’ve just read this comment and I’m a bit confused. I know how to clean the burner tube but how and when does it wear out.
      Unless it goes rusty it is made of stainless steel, the gas simply flows through it, so I’d like to know:
      1) In what way does it wear out?
      2) How do you know it’s worn out?
      Any views you could pass on would be much appreciated.
