      Good luck with your new plant, your climate should be warm enough to grow it outside in a pot if you keep it sheltered from the rain. My plant has grown a lot since this video, I've made several more videos about this plant since.

      @@Gardeningat58N I must look for your more recent videos. Where I live we do get a small amount of frosts, don’t think it would like that. My parents came from Scotland 👍 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇳🇿

      @@heatherstephens9295 they must have felt at home in new Zealand, much of your islands have landscapes simmilar to Scotland, I visited years ago when I was a child and I remember the far south of the south island being very windy and cold. The elephant foot vines are happy with cold temperatures even when growing, but frosts can damage them. I've had mine in my conservatory and it was fine down to 3c for prolonged periods of time.

    My first plant has just come out of dormancy and while the vine is 4+' long now, it only has some tiny leaves emerging directly from the vine. I was worried that it would not be getting enough energy for its aggressive growth, but base on your video, it seems that it will leaf out after the vine has fully extended. Thanks for posting the this video!

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes its surprising how much quick growth the plant puts out before its leaves develop, but there is a huge amount of energy stored in the tuber so the plant will be fine. Mine sometimes takes almost two months to develop leaves after its started growing even though it has several feet of stems.

    will you recommend to grow it in a bright window or bright room?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, a bright or sunny position would be best, as long as the tuber doesn't get too hot.

    WHEN CAN I CUT THE GUIDE? WHEN ALL THE LEAVES ARE DRY?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes ideally when all the leaves have dried, but if they are all yellow then it is also OK to cut it back. As the leaves and stems die back the plant absorbs nutrients from them so allowing them to die back completely is best.

    How old is this plant and how often do you water? Indoor plant?

  • @whoueland4501
    @whoueland4501 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    and how do you know if it get too much sun light or not enough sun light?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If its not getting enough light its leaves will go a paler green and the vine will be very long but have few leaves. Generally the more sun it gets the better, where it grows in the wild its very hot and sunny so the leaves can handle a lot of light, however the tuber prefers to be away from very hot sunshine.

    How old is your plant

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had it for about two years, but I reckon the plants age is between 3 and 4 years. This video is nearly a year old now, so it was between 2 and 3 years old in this video.

    How to grow it from seeds

  • @hmmn2185

    Hi, if I cut the vine short will it regrow or it will grow a new vine to replace it?

    • @SimonSverige
      @SimonSverige 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      only cut it when it dies. They grow a new one every year and you cut the old one off when it is dead. never cut green leaves or stems off.

    Hiya where can I get one please

  • @Paul-010
    @Paul-010 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could you let us have an update please? Mine, which I purchased in February is still dormant, I know you said it could remain like this for a few months, I'm still concerned tho! :)

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I can do an update in a week or two, since this video its grown a few more leaves and the base has grown a bit. But a few leaves are turning yellow so it may go dormant soon. That does seem to be a long time, make sure the tuber is still firm and the compost is fairly dry, but not bone dry. Try to make the compost a littler damper to encourage it out of dormancy, but be careful not to get it too damp otherwise it will rot. What temperature and location has it been in?

    • @Paul-010
      @Paul-010 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gardening at 58 North Thanks for replying. Mine is in a sunny room at an average night temperature of 15c , although I do not place it in the sun, I did water it yesterday as it was bone dry. The soil feels slightly damp now, the tuber still feels solid. I'll look forward to seeing your update( and feel a little envious! ) :)

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Paul B I would try moving it to a much warmer room or position for a few weeks, sometimes a big change in temperature can help to coax it out of dormancy.

      I bought it from an online cactus shop, although they no longer sell them, but I have also seen several on ebay.

    • @Paul-010
      @Paul-010 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tobias W I bought one from eBay, it cost me £75 as it was a large one. Unfortunately, it is still dormant! 😩. I also grow 5 from seed and they are growing really well.

      Tobias W I bought some seeds from the Glenrothes cacti nursery about six years ago unfortunately I think it has closed due to health reasons earlier this year. The seeds all did very well until I went to uni and couldn't take them with me :( I lost over 300 cacti and succulents in the space of four years :( including my very first cacti which I got when I was six :( . I can't vouch for other suppliers but all of the seeds I got from that supplier germinated even though it was the first time I had tried to grow cacti and other succulents from seeds and I was using soil from my parents garden.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      + Paul B You can buy them from ebay, as seeds or young plants. I don't know of any nurseries or garden centres that sell them. I bought mine from cactusshop.co.uk, however they no longer seem to stock it.

    • @Paul-010
      @Paul-010 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gardening at 58 North Thanks for your reply. I did look on eBay and the only companies that sell the seeds are not in UK and they say they are not responsible for any import restrictions. Hey ho...I'll keep looking!
      Keep your vids coming please, I'm really enjoying them!

      How exciting, you have certainly had to wait a long time for it to grow. It will start slow at first, but then after a few weeks it will grow really quickly. I'm still waiting for mine to come out of dormancy.
