- If you like Gospel, Blues, Soul Rock & Roll or any other form of classic American music, you have got to watch this. A huge influence on many who came after her, yet largely forgotten, Sister Rosetta Tharpe is mind-blowingly great!
She should definitely be in the rock hall of fame. No excuses.
We weren't recognized then and we're still not recognized
@@cathrynbell3039 She was inducted in 2018
Must respect for this great lady.
@@cathrynbell3039 she had a stamp in 1998, BBC did a documentary about her in 2011, she was inducted into the HOF in 2017. Quit trying to keep up a narrative that’s not true.
She was inducted but not til 2018. She was the one that started it all and definitely not recognized enough.
There need to be a movie made about this woman
there needs 2 b movie about emmitt till 2!!!
Gerald Freeman you are right!
Gerald Freeman Not unless they have the lead played by a woman who is really black. I was just sick when the woman who played Nina Simone was nearly white. Nina was very dark and embraced it.
Marie McCowan your right
AMEN to that!
The mother of rock and roll music. Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
Its a musical crime that in my 54 years 40 of them a guitar player that until 10 minutes ago I never heard of this lady.. She rocked !!
Just like the movie hidden figures there's so much talent amongst the black people that went unrecognized until this day is still being found
Wow, me too. But I don’t play any instrument. Wasn’t she amazing. Powerful musician.
Me too 👍
@@beatlesareshite same here.
It is a crime! Glad you finally found the Sister
Grateful that You Tube provides us with history that was never taught in our school systems.
The architect of Rock n Roll was this woman.
@@feedxtianstolions nonsense. She created it. I'm sure you give credit if a man does it right?
@@feedxtianstolions ok, but certainly one of a hell of a lot more than Elvis talentless crap bag Presley!!!
She was the first woman invented the Rock n Roll sounds, before Elvis, Chuck Berry, And Johnny Cash. One very first that bring gospel to mainstream
But yet most never heard of her. 😔
Donald Mccall rock and roll cane from the house of God, not Rosetta. Let’s get it all right people. There’s no color to this game. When you believe there’s color you are being distracted. Music is good and it’s from God. Evil corrupts music and that’s why we are where we are today. That’s why there is “Rock and Roll.” Fuck Rock and Roll. It’s just music. Good or bad it’s music. But where it comes from we are trying to figure out. Why we like it, trying to figure that out.
Donald Mccall you forgot fat dominos he’s the father of rock and roll
Duckers Lopez 🤫
@@gabrielyhamel1794 Stfu, Rock and Roll came from Rosetta alone. Rosetta was a BLACK WOMAN who was discriminated against in segregated. White supremacist America and now you lot want to claim race doesn't matter. It mattered heavily in her life when she was treated as lesser than for being black AND for being a woman
I saw Rosetta on this 1964 tour in Liverpool, UK. She was great. After the performance, I found my way backstage and got her autograph.
She my hero!! Loved that guitar.
Brilliant! Lucky you xx
Wow! To believe alive at that time....just...wow!!!
Do you still have that autograph
Whaaaat?????
The Mother of All Rock and Roll.
The true Queen of Rock n' Roll
The true originator of rock and roll. I love this woman so damn much. I play her work non-stop. I'm so damn selfish I wish I could rip her out of her time and put her in mine. Thank god I can't. RIP beautiful lady.
Naughty fellas such as Wynonie Harris invented rock and roll, a new kind of jump blues that had the message partying-is-our-religion, mentioned "deacons" and the like and paralleled "rocking in the bosom of Abraham" with rocking the joint, and mixed gospel musical style in (such as backbeat, previously associated mainly with the church) to make the joke even more obvious.
Kevin Harris Kevin why don't radio stations play the old stuff it is ourstory. And it is a lot of her in rock and roll.
Kevin Harris the EMPRESS of rock n roll.
werd.
I am one of the blessed ones who saw her as a child, when she came to my city. She and my mother went shopping together in the segregated stores in my city in the 60s..
I'd love to hear more!
christjen4
Lenray Gandy Thats a great story and Im sure a fond memory.
thats incredible!
I'm currently writing a book, it's entitled "Civil Right & Wrongs, In the Eyes of A Child"... I met Dr King, Medgar Evers NAACP leder Jackson, Ms (killed by KKK in 1963) and two close friends, Michael Schwerner and James Chaney (two of 3 civil rights workers killed by the KKK in 1964)...
My God if we just knew our history, we would not want to perm or bleach our heritage away. We come from greats............
Her hairrrrr
I think that these profiles that attach are phony, it's ppl hiding behind the Internet like sheets
It was for the generations after her, after her......but still thank you for her
She is still great, and I wish the generations NOW, TO DAY knew of her greatness and influence on rock n roll. Instead our history always begins with slavery.
But even with slavery and self hatred (perms) she still is the mother of rock n roll. We come from greats, strong ppl
This story is so American. We should be uplifted and proud she was one of us. The older I get the more I love my black brothers and sisters.
I am so glad that the UK gave her her propers!
Terry Dillon so often it takes an outsider to appreciate what's right there, plain to see.
first off you're beautiful second is she English

Terry Dillon love back at you miss lady I love to see really good female Talent any kind good of entertainment really I had learned something new today though I always like to share this station with people I'm talking to 10 foot ganja plant on Pandora radio it's not what it sounds like but it's good stuff it's reggae for the first month that I had it on I didn't have to select a dislike at all maybe two months and not really sure it was awhile ago but anyway enjoy and don't be shy about giving me some feedback I would appreciate it
LOL
FINALLY, Sister Tharpe inducted today.Hallelujah!
i didn't know that, fucking awsome!
It's about time! Take it to the kids.
Inducted into what?
Can we form complete sentences? SMDH 😑

She was great but that person didn't have to put a swear word in the comments but I'll pray r im
I love these kinds of videos, they’re a lesson in history. Sister Rosetta Tharpe helped lay the foundation of what would become Rock & Roll.

make a movie about this great lady.let queen Latifah play her.
bluenote824 jones Rosetta Tharpe and Pearl Bailey look like sisters and Queen Latifah looks like Pearl's daughter
She would be perfect cast as Rosetta, wow good thinking!!!
This has to get produced!
Nah, Lauryn Hill should play her. Queen Latifah should play Big Mama Thornton.
I love queen Latifah, but do you think she could do justice to sister Rosetta???
Wow!! I've never heard of her. She was AWESOME!! A pioneer.

Because she’s Black and a female
She did. She was basically a household name when she was young.
Well first she was black, and second she was a woman in a time where neither had equal rights! She was very popular at the time, but you see how media/press can make it seem like you never existed?
Because the love to steal black peoples music and take it as there own.
Man she was jammin' on that guitar!
The Mother of Rock'n'Roll.
I grew up down South in the late 1940s, 50s & early 60s and we used to listen to her on the radio all of the time. She was amazing!
Only a black woman could masterfully combined gospel with a guitar. Well done, Sister Rosetta!
Just discovered Sister Rosetta. Love her.

Unfortunately, I'd never heard of her until now, but I am absolutely fascinated. 💯 should be in Rock hall of fame such an amazing woman.
Genius ! This woman was incredible, for me modern in her time, an example for a lot of people!
Unbelievable how she is so little known, nowadays... :(
Now, this is a true artist, singer, musician, just a National Treasure. Rest in Peace Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
The Godmother of Gospel, Rock N Roll and American popular music that spread all over the world.
One of the GOAT's! No telling how many future country and rock stars were in those audiences.

Tharpe was her married name... I was Lucky to find some old Records of hers at an Estate sale, I hadn't heard of her.. so I Looked her up on here.. what a beautiful Lady, Love her music....
Does she have records under her maiden name?
Go Rosetta. They offered her big bucks to change, but she stayed true. I was fortunate to be born in 1934, so my Mother already was a fan. Precious Memories.
Sing it Sister Rosetta. Just can't help but smile watching her perform.

Heck at best she should be called pioneer of Rock and Roll!!!

*vintageloftny* The only reason she's called "Godmother" instead of "Queen" of Rock n Roll is 'cause she was a nun. Had she _not_ been a nun, Im sure she wouldve been known as "Mother" or "Queen" :)
This is AWESOME! As an ELVIS, rockabilly, and early rock and roll fan, I see this woman's tremendous influence on modern rock. Just Wow.
i dont like elvis he did buy a lot of songs from black song writers that needed money badly so thats all good.but he refused to play with blacks on stage big mama was blanked when she asked to play with elvis in the 60s maybe he was told not to by his management.but he should of done it cause without the blues there was no elvis great post she was a great guitarist & great singer song writer with pure talent.. ....
@@djbigleg3228 That's plain false and a lie. He even refused to play a concert unless he could bring his black gospel singers and players. Back then, it was not as pronounced perhaps, but blacks like Chuck Berry often had racist encounters playing. Elvis often championed blacks in song and action.

I can remember the ,64 Manchester station appearance as though it was yesterday...I was 22 back then. It was part of a one off Saturday night BBC TV production which featured the 'Soul Train'. This was a steam train that had been laid on to transport a whole group of gospel and soul artistes just for this one occasion. Here in England we hadn't seen anything like this before and it was a sensation that left it's mark on me even to this day. In a way it was also the swan song for steam locomotives here in the UK because within 18 months all of them had been withdrawn from service.

I know this is 9yrs old but I had to comment!
10:35 This lovely woman is speaking to how she saw Sister Rosetta Tharpe looked up when she sang- as if she is speaking to God. THIS made me write.
I live in Minnesota- Home of the greatest artist ever- Prince
I would get calls to be apart of his after hours parties at Paisley Park. Plus I’ve been front row at his concerts. I have seen him, up close, many times.
Each time he really got into his songs, he would throw his head back, mouth open, and connected to God- every time.
I would tell people for years, that when he would do this, he was connected to God.
I got laughed at or I’d get the “yeah, sure he is” People thought I was crazy. I challenge to to look at any of his videos & you WILL see the moment he saw God. It was as if HE was playing for God- not just us.
This vid Moved me so much. I had never heard another person say this about any artist. I stopped in my tracks & HAD to write this.
I’ve only know a little bit of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. However in her performance of “Didn’t it rain, children” SHE is standing in the rain, with her steel electric guitar.
Know who else did that ???
Prince at the 2007 SuperBowl. Prince wanted it to rain harder. He sang Purple Rain, in the rain ☔️ Because God wanted us to hear the energy! Greatest Super bowl halftime EVER.
I wonder how much Prince was influenced by Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
I will die on this hill- Prince IS the greatest all around artist EVER. He never left us in Minneapolis, his home. He stayed & played & loved us, And we loved him- didn’t matter what color. When you hear & see Prince or Sister Rosetta Tharpe perform, you are lifted closer to God. Their gifts transcended any man made religion to show us GOD given faith!!❤❤❤
The more I learn about her, the more I have hope & faith. She was amazing!
I was so surprised and happy to see Sister Tharpe in the new Elvis movie. She is an awesome artist and needs more recognition.
Thanks for the video of this remarkable and important musician. Very well done.
Thank the universe this is accessible.
Showmanship oozes out of her. She seems so happy performing. Passion and talent. Almost like they hid her from us. This woman was so good. Just makes you feel good watching her. And watching her interact with her band, and audience, forget about it! FUN!
No words to describe, she is one of the kind
I love how she wove her culture into her singing and as an Indigenous youth who sings I’m inspired. My hero is Buffy Sainte Marie and now Miss Rosetta is added to my list of idols. Thank you/ Miigwetch for sharing.
She is unbelievably talented and I am disappointed that I have never heard of her.
Once again You Tube delivers the roots of Rock and Roll. Better late knowing the past before too late and forgotten. I certainly will look further into all the music from the early days in USA.

This youtube version had more in it than the one on the PBS website. Thanks for uploading this.
Absolutely love this well-composed & inspiring story ! She's a legend. Thank You, TH-cam...
Why is this woman not in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame??????????????????
because she's a woman and they wanted a man to be her instead. It still goes on today where if a woman comes up with anything new, she is scoffed at and eventually not even mentioned.
Not true..she is widely admired and appreciated. It just depends on who you are and what you know..and what your experience is. She is awesome.
She is in a way more important hall of fame!
because she is a black woman they hate seeing us doing well
C Mayweather Hattie McDaniel has 2 stars in the walk of fame, Jennifer Hudson, Tupac, I could go on. Do your research before you make statements like that, it's tiresome and OLD
Thanks Mike. This is just one of the many great programmes that we have every Friday on the BBC. Keep the music alive!

I know me too. Its early in the morning and she made my day. I thought I knew all the greats
rosetta thorpe isn't in the hall of fame, because the gringos would have to admit this sister is the founder and creator of rock and roll...
not like black men had no problem taking her place either...you know Chuck Berry.

About 35 black women and about 25 white women have been recognized by the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Tharpe wasn't the founder of rock and roll, rock and roll was a new type of jump blues, a secular style invented (by the likes of Wynonie Harris, Wild Bill Moore, and Roy Brown) during a period when Tharpe refused to perform any secular music.
Arabion knight she wasn't though, shes good but not the founder

As I mentioned on the Radio over the years This Lady Invented Rock & Roll. The Black Panther has changed things,,,A movie about this lady will do even more.
The missing link that ties blues, gospel, country fried soul, r & b, jazz etc. A true american pioneer and trailblazing legend. Her life story is truly amazing. What an inspiration and light to this world. Rock on sister!
